Ministry helps afflicted people of Sudan

Today I heard a very moving testimony from a woman missionary named Kimberly Smith on Focus for the Family. Mrs. Smith is a missionary who helps victims of human trafficking. While she was in Sudan she came upon a woman who had been raped by the Muslim janjaweed. She herself was also raped. This is an all too common occurence in Sudan along with human trafficking.

Kimberly Smith wrote about her experience in her book "Passport Through Darkness". This mission seems like a very worthy work for churches that might like to adopt this ministry as their own. It doesn't take much to help fellow Christians in a desperately poor country like Sudan. A monthy collection could make a big difference.

Not sure why but I feel a kinship with a couple of countries . Haiti and south Sudan are two of them. I have helped Haitians but have not the Sudanese. Not yet anyway. Thanks for the info.

I know how you feel. I got overdosed on the video of starving, desparate children a while back.
Those children aren't living in a vacuum. They have families, extended and immediate; they have both village and tribal ties; they have a local and "federal" government, however dysfunctional all those entities are.

Those countries DO have money and there ARE people there living good - luxurious lives. There IS money there and the desparate children we see AREN'T getting any help, it seems.
I WOULD like to see our government PRESSURE those well-off and wealthy people there in all those countries to HELP their own. They can! It would be nice to hear if any do.

Am I being unreasonable in questioning like that?

All I can say is I watched the Haitian people show more constraint and dignity then our own folk after Katrina. I admired the way they handled themselves in the most horrific conditions. In contrast those (many) in new Orleans could have left. They had ample warning. They allowed themselves to be herded like sheep to a death camp(dome). Then they blamed everyone but themselves.
The Haitian government has always been corrupt. Not sure how to change that. Its the poorest country in the western hemisphere.

Well, we only see what our media allows us to see. We saw the WORST of people in Katrina. I find it hard to believe that there wasn't a "worst" component in Haiti.
Having said that, perhaps the military in Haiti is so harsh that people behave, on pain of a bullet. Who knows? We SURE don't get the true picture from our media. At least, that's my read.

As for Haiti's poverty, it's the structure of their society and government. Usually there a small number of very powerful and wealthy families that control a country's land, banking, military and government. They hold tight to their power. Haiti's "families" seem to be the worst of their kind.

The Dominican Republic is on the SAME island as Haiti; and they are basically the same kind of people, mestizos of Spain and France and slavery and a mixture of "others." One nation, Haiti, is a pit and the other is not so bad. We even get baseball players from there.
It's in the society itself. They are the ones who must cure themselves. It has to come from within as NO outside group can change them.

It's horribly sad and we get it right in our face on our T.V. There are some things cash can't fix.
