Jewish leaders offended by ceremony at Georgia megachurch dubbing {Baptist} preacher a ‘king’

Jewish leaders are criticizing a ceremony that involved a controversial megachurch leader being wrapped in a religious scroll and exalted as a “king” to the applause of his parishioners.

The video from a service last Sunday at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church shows Rabbi Ralph Messer, a Messianic preacher, instructing two men to slowly wrap Bishop Eddie Long in a large scroll that’s purported to be the Torah.

“It doesn’t matter where you go, how you try to attack him. He’s sealed,” Messer proclaims, before the scroll is opened to reveal a teary-eyed Long. Moments later, Long was seated in a plush chair, covered in a prayer shawl while holding the sacred scroll and lifted by four men.

“He now is raised up from a commoner to a kingship,” Messer proclaims, as the men walk Long’s seat around an adoring crowd.

Messianic Jews believe that Jesus Christ, or Yeshua, is the Messiah, putting them at odds with traditional Jewish theology. Most Jews consider the faith to be a form of evangelical Christianity.

..The Torah is one of Judaism’s most sacred objects and Jewish groups said the notion that it was used in a ceremony at the church was offensive.

I had to laugh when I saw the video of Eddie Long being wrapped around with a scroll.

With the importance that Jews place upon their ancestry, there is no way they would risk tearing a scroll or rubbing some names out by mistake, by wrapping a king in a scroll during his coronation.

well, he is funny! As YukonGreen pointed out, it does seem that 90% of the Pentecostal preachers are fakes and in it for personal wealth!

Check on youtube for "Eddie Long, cross it up!" -- it's funny!

This is a cult, not Christianity.

I don’t really find false teachers to be funny. Perhaps I’m odd.

Did he see any letters flying up to heaven? You know, there is a macarbe precedent to being wrapped in a Torah:

“...Another sage martyred was Rabbi Haninah ben Teradion, who was wrapped in a Torah scroll and burned alive. Damp wool was packed into his chest to ensure he would not die quickly. When he was being burnt, he told his students that he could see the letters of the sacred torah “flying up” to heaven.”

Does this kind of ceremony have any kind of historical precedent in Jewish or Christian history?

There wouldn’t be any sense in being one if you couldn’t act like one.

King Eddie and his tribe pulled a few Jewish chains when they used a Torah, or at least the appearance of one to proclaim Eddie King, but the Jews still love them and will help elect Obama again. The Jews led the Civil Rights movement, the Jews love the ACLU,The Jews and the Democrat party are joined at the hip.

They might get a little upset once in a while at the goings on of a few blacks, but in the end they will still be with them, they are liberals and that is how liberals think.

The Jewish mind is impossible to fathom. Half the time they even stand against Israel in their support of Obama, and that I cannot understand. But being true Democrats appears to trump the Jewish religion and the Catholic religion, as Nancy Pelosi stands with Obama against her Church and prefers abortions to her alledged religion.

This coronation will soon be forgotten, and after all it was just fun and games to the child-like minds of its celebrants.

Wow! I just find it funny that protestants decry Catholicism for its ritual and pomp, but then some protestants come up with some truly bizarre off the wall stuff like this. At least Catholic ritual is based in scripture.

The closest that I know of is the martyrology that we read on Yom Kippur, in which one of the Jewish martyrs during the Hadrianic persecutions was wrapped in a torah scroll, and set afire by the Romans. Perhaps that is why some of my fellow Jews find the service to be offensive. I don’t. I just find it to be bizarre.

HA, cults. Later today a string-bedecked Jewish slattern will entertain at the Super Bowl while using a name which some Christians regard as sacred. Am I offended? NAH....I got better things to do.

Jews have enough problems without Roman Catholic Madonna Ciccone being assigned to them!

I find the photo and story humorous, as I dub this "minister" a buffoon, an absurdity.

An "IGNORE" button should be pushed by religious leaders who only validate when they stoop to acknowledge this Minister Buffoon.

"Megachurch" ministers don't last long. They are like a version of a "Madonna" who shock then fade away with all the other stupidities that are a result of godless cultures.

I have admit, I was thinking of the WWE’s King Booker when I saw it.

That’s a good one. Best laugh I’ve had in a long time. Catholicism is a combination of Christianity and voodoo.

This video shows he’s been doing this Torah traveling side show for at least 4 years. It’s a little over a minute long. Watch the whole thing to see what I mean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6Dlfj-Nljg&feature=related
