Updated: *153* Bishops (Over 80% of Dioceses) Have Spoken Out Against Obama/HHS Mandate

Name UserAmerican

by Thomas Peters

In the past I’ve compiled a list of all the bishops speaking out on a particular controversial issue (for instance, over Notre Dame’s invitation to President Obama) — here are the bishops who have spoken out against the Obama/HHS mandate.

[See my ongoing coverage of Obama/HHS's war against religious liberty herehere, here and most recently here. I'm also tweeting more updates @AmericanPapist.]

If I have missed anyone please let me know in the comments! And please double-check that your bishop really is not there before posting. The list is not in any particular order at this point.

Items in bold mean the statement was read at all diocesan Masses or included in all parish bulletins on Sunday:

SPECIAL MENTION: “The Assembly of Orthodox Bishops in North America just issued a formal statement of protest against the HHS mandate in which the Assembly, representing all 53 Orthodox bishops in North America, references their complete agreement with the statements of the USCCB.”

THANK YOU to everyone who has helped me build and correct this list.

NOTE: If you would like a statement by an Eastern Rite bishop to be included please send me the link/document or post it in the comments! Thank you. I’m trying to provide documentation for all the bishops listed and Eastern Rite bishops have been harder for me to track down. Thank you for understanding!

UPDATE: Of the 183 dioceses (by my count) in the U.S. who have a bishop currently serving as its head, 155 of them have issued statements. So over 80% of bishops who head dioceses have spoken out against the Obama/HHS mandate.

The “Catholics” should have thought about that when they overwhelmingly supported Obamacare and illegal aliens getting free obamacare when they crossed the border!

Now that the cats out of the bag, they want to act like they don't support it.

50 percent of Catholics (Catholics make up about 22 percent of the U.S. population.) approve of his presidency, down from 67 percent in his first six months in office.
DOWN 17 POINTS

among non-Catholic Christians, who make up 55 percent of the U.S. population, had fallen from 58 percent to 43 percent.
DOWN 15 POINTS

Mormon respondents, who represent about two percent of U.S. adults, fell from 43 percent to 26 percent
DOWN 17 POINTS

About 78 percent of Muslim respondents approved of the Obama presidency, down eight percentage points from when the question was first asked.  (86)
DOWN 8 POINTS

atheists, agnostics, and members of other non-Christian religions, who comprise about 13 percent of the U.S. population -- While about 75 percent of these respondents approved of President Obama at the start of his term, their approval declined to about 64 percent.
DOWN 11 POINTS

Jews were the religious group third likeliest to approve of President Obama, giving him 61 percent approval. This too is a decline: in January-June 2009, their approval rating of the president was 77 percent.
DOWN 16 POINTS

Overall, 48 percent of Americans approve of President Obama’s job, down from 63 percent in the first months of his presidency. Gallup claims that its survey of over 276,000 adults claims an overall margin of error of plus or minus one percent.

Perhaps you were not aware of the support Obama got from many denominations -- maybe even yours. Check the facts first, please.

Catholics hear anti-Obama letter in church (Some idiots wanted "change" so they got it)
Has Obama Lost the Catholic Left?

Obama won the overall religious vote, 52 percent to 46 percent, reversing President George W. Bush’s 51 percent to 48 percent “values voter” victory over Democratic challenger Sen. John Kerry in 2004. Obama also won the Catholic vote, persuaded young evangelical voters to choose him and began to squeeze shut the so-called “God gap” yawning between religious Democrats and Republicans during the Bush era.

How will the roughly 9.1 million evangelical Christians who voted for Obama vote in the next election? Will Obama's actions compel the 31.2 million evangelicals who didn't vote in the 2008 election to vote next time?

Obama Receives 77% of Jewish Vote-- More Than Kerry
White US Catholics move toward GOP, Hispanic Catholics toward Democrats
Among Catholics, Obama job approval rating decreases to 50 percent

80% oppose it.

Well that explains why the Democrats created Catholics for ObamaCare or whatever and the new meme from Pelosi that Catholics favor the mandates.

It’s an age old tactic, who can we fool today?

The democrat fascist party will want the Catholic Justices to recuse themselves when it gets to the SC. While they don't want their recent pick to recuse because she worked on and for the Obamacare law she'll be ruling on, they will see religion as a reason for them to recuse.

Without including what percentage of the voting public each group constitutes that's a pretty worthless chart, really. In addition, it has no breakdown of what percentage of each group didn't vote in each election.

For example, the vast majority of Black folks count themselves as Fundamentalist Protestants according to the categories included in this chart yet the chart doesn't break out "White Evangelicals" v all Evangelicals. Just sayin'

I was pleased to see Bishop Bradley's letter in our bulletin yesterday. He asked us to contact our representatives which I need to do today. I was inspired to check out the Bishop's Facebook page, so I could argue further with my Protestant and pro-death friends and relatives, and found this link which does a good job disputing the Administration's lies: White House Misrepresents Its Own Contraceptive Mandate

I had especially wondered about that 98% of Catholic women using oral contraceptives figure, since most of my Catholic friends have tons of kids. It turns out that figure is deceptive like most of the things B. Hussein puts out.

I heard that Cdl George said he himself expects to die peacefully in bed,. but he expects his successor to die in prison, and the one after that to be executed in the public square.

I will look for that quote.

I heard the number was somthing like 80% but that includes anyone that says they are Catholic. Most of which only see the inside of a Church twice a year.

I remembered the quote and looked for it myself — it’s from 2009, during the gay “marriage” thing in Chicago. He seems to have spoken powerfully at the time about infringements on religious liberty, which is why I would have expected to see him on the list.

Yes, I would like to know what the percentage of contraceptive-users is for faithful Catholics, but I suppose that is hard to sort out. As Patrick Coffin says on Catholic Answers Live: You should judge the effectiveness of a prescription by the effects on those who actually take the medicine, not those who refuse to follow the prescription. This message may be obscured in this case, since we are referring to those who don’t take the medicine as following the Church, but you get the picture!

Los Angeles Archdiocese here. Does anyone know whether this was to be read in all churches nationwide? If it is up to the Archbishop? I know that Archbishop Gomez spoke out against the mandate. Is it up to the individual parishes? It has not yet been read in our church, which is very orthodox and conservative....

Add Bishop Paul Sirba of Duluth, MN with this letter linked here: http://www.dioceseduluth.org/cmanager/File/Communications/Bishop_Sirba_Letter_on_HHS.pdf

As for Bishop Kicanis of Tucson, his comments only reference the local March for Life, and in no way mention the HHS ruling. NO statement regarding the ruling appears anywhere on the diocesan website. I would question whether he should be included on the list. We are very fortunate and blessed that the bishops chose Cardinal-designate Dolan rather than Kicanis as their leader last year.

If Catholics are using any kind of contraception — they are not REAL Catholics, but CINOs.

They need to go to Confession and learn about Natural Family Planning after that.

I was trying to show that the vote was generally 50/50.
The "vote" on this by the bishops is, roughly, 80-20.

I just hope it is reflected the same in the next election.

all denominations see it for what it is, a take over of religious freedom....the supreme court made it clear that the government cannot tell religious how to run their church cause if they do, they are making a state religion which is forbidden by the Constitution.

If all hospitals that are religious were to say Nope we will close down, there goes about 1/2 the hospitals in the country....Obama is not smart, he is the biggest dumb ass going and has surrounded himself with other dumb ass's.

I think that boy wants a civil war 2...idiot

Jewish people are also standing strong () with the catholic church.... Overt, open religious persecution has started..

This is how >upset the Priests are in the Catholic Church. My Bishop’s name is on the list. My Priest didn’t read the letter at the Mass I attended. Instead, the Priest spoke about the letter, abortion & the March for Life.

The Priest then stepped >out of the Sanctuary & walked up to the first pews. The Priest explained the prior promises President Obama made to the Catholic Bishops & what Obama is doing NOW. The Priest then >apologized for what he was going to say & then said, ‘President Obama just gave our Bishops the >finger.’ The Priest then asked us to pray for the Catholic Church & the USA.

The Priest is a middle aged man & has been a Priest for a number of years. The vocation of the Catholic Bishop is to help people get >into Heaven & NOT to help send people to Hell. It will be a historic election year.

I am blessed to live in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia; Archbishop Chaput has been a stalwart rock.

Our Monsignor, Msr. McLoone, personally read the letter and explained it at each and every Mass this weekend.

I was surprised at the number of people who had no idea exactly what this evil mandate was about, and wonderfully surprised that no one walked out (given the number of CINOs in our parish).

The Priest spoke like a Priest without anger; it was just a statement of fact.
>>>1corinthians9: 19-23 in part, “Although I am free in regards to all, I have made myself a slave to all so as to win over as many as possible. To the Jews I became like a Jew... To those outside the law I became like one outside the law... To the weak I became weak, to win over the weak. I have become all things to all to save at least some. >All this I do for the sake of the gospel, so that I too may have a share in it.’
>>>On Judgment Day, Jesus Christ will ask all his ministerial Priests,’Where be all the sheep I gave you?’ All members of the ‘common priesthood of the faithful’ are also obligated to understand the ‘Parable of the Talents.’

I still can’t figure why the Pope does not send an email to the Bishops. Something like “ we expect your support in standing against this decision”..........I just don’t get the voting of Bishops on issues. I thought Rome had the final say.
