I believe that our right to religious freedom is now being censored. Each day as I write this message, I wonder if it will be my last. For those of you who “pooh pooh” that, and think it is a gross exaggeration, think again.

I am aquainted with a number of Orthodox Christians from Albania. The communist government of Albania closed all houses of worship in 1967 and prohibited any public expression of religon, religious instruction, etc. They proclaimed themselves the world’s first atheistic society. After the communists fell in the 1990’s and people were free to travel outside the country, I got to meet young people who had spent their entire lives under Enver Hoxha’s bizarre tyranny. Most of them were not ignorant of the faith. One woman knew all of the music from the Divine Liturgy by heart. The faith had lived on in the shadows.
I don’t dismiss the HHS regulations and other attacks upon religious liberty as being unimportant. Not at all. I am an absolutist on the First Amendment, including the religion clause. People who care about freedom at all had better stick by the First Amendment. But I still go to church and live my faith unimpaired. Could that change? Sure. But I am encouraged by the knowledge that Barack Obama, the United States Government under his regime, and all the other anti-religious elements in the country, are mere flyspecks to God.
