NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The nation's largest protestant denomination will definitely remain "Baptist," but leaders are thinking about whether it will be "Southern" for much longer.

My late grandpa called them “Footwashin’ Baptists.”

He were a laid back Lutheran and thought them a bit over zealous.

Then your laid back Lutheran Grandpa didn’t know what he was talking about. Fr4eewill Baptists wash feet in their churches. The only footwashing I’ve ever been subjected to in my Southern Baptist church building is when I shower after playing sports or working out in the family recreation center.

Interesting that a lot of Southern Baptist brethren criticized Pelosi for her remark about needing to pass the legislation so we can see what’s in it. The Convention committee exploring this have apparently decided what their recommendation is going to be. They’re going to keep it a secret until they decide we can see what the recommendation is. If that’s the best input that Jimmie Draper can come up with, then we are at the mercy of mad men.

53% favorable, 44 neg.

Probably 38% would pan it because they are the Liberal base, so 6% in addition to them see negatives.

Not enough to change the name.

The term was meant as a tease—this is South Carolina and we have all kinds and grandpa had many Baptist friends—heck you can’t sling a dead cat round these parts without hittin’ one—and he would call them “footwashers” to their faces and they would joke that he was going to heck because that little sprinkle of water on his forehead when he was a baby didn’t count as a real baptism;)

I miss him, too. He was my pastor. My last conversation with him was in the church courtyard the day my daughter was baptized. He hugged me and prayed the sweetest prayer for her. He died a few months later. In private he was same man he appeared to be from afar.

Sad to say there are. Megamillionaire author/ambulance chaser with a last name that rhymes with Disham is one. They believe it’s ok to murder a baby but a sin to baptize it. ;)

You are right about John Grisham, but wrong about believing infant baptism is a sin.

Not a sin, just not scriptural, Grisham was a different person when he was practicing law in a little shared brick building on Stateline Rd. in Southaven, Miss.

“Any name change would have to be approved at the SBC’s annual conventions the next two years.”

We have time.

“Although 53 percent of respondents overall had a favorable view of the Southern Baptists, the high negatives are a concern for a denomination in which spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ is a fundamental to their faith.”

Since when did polling enter into things?

Do Catholics poll their negatives, and consider changing the name of their church? Do Jews?

If they actually kneel before the polling gods, we are headed into a very dark place.

John Grisham is an embarrassment not only to Southern Baptists, but to Mississippi as a whole.

Gramps was uninformed. There might be some small Baptist group that does foot-washing, but that’s more in line with Pentecostals. Definitely not SBC or any mainstream Baptist group.

As far as over-zealous... My ex-husband was Lutheran, and when we attended his church I was tempted to hold a mirror to the mouths of the congregation just to see if they were breathing. I mean... why bother going?

You got my drift—compared to the Lutheran Church the Southern Baptists were hand clapping footstomping (footwashing) charismatics to him. Granpa was used to the more subdued.
He didn't hold it against the S Baptists he knew just teased them about it in a friendly way and they teased him back.
Too bad others on this thread are so obtuse.

I certainly don’t believe baptizing infants is a sin. I’m Presbyterian(PCA, conservative Bible believing variety, definitely not PCUSA). It was just my tongue-in-cheek way of describing the beliefs of liberal, pro-abortion Baptists(probably better called BINOs a/k/a Baptists In Name Only).

I’m sure Hollywood, fame and the money that came with it along with the leftism of the current legal profession itself has caused the person you’re talking about to reject the belief in the inerrancy of the Bible and replace it with belief in the “inerrancy” of the Democratic party political platform(again, being tongue-in-cheek).

Southern Baptists neither footwash, nor speak in tongues, as a church. I have known some individuals do the later privately, but never have I known a ‘footwasher’

There are some liberals in the Sotuhern Baptists but they are fewer and fewer in number. If I remember correctly Southern Baptists Were a bit more liberal in the 1920s than today but it is getting more conservative each year.

The liberals made a run at our seminaries in the 1980s and early nineties and they were cleaned out in the mid 1990s by a couple of SBC presidents, but there are still some left.
