Gay marriage: David Cameron faces church backlash over 'cultural vandalism'
The Telegraph ^ | 20 Feb 2012` | John Bingham

Mr Cameron, who has publicly pledged his support for gay marriage, is facing a growing backlash from within his own party over the proposal to redefine the legal definition of marriage to include same-sex couples

He is now facing the prospect of an open breach with prominent religious figures – just a week after leading Conservatives voiced their support for Christianity following a series of court rulings which reinforced the secularisation of Britain.

Lord Carey, the former Archbishop of Canterbury, yesterday joined Lord Brennan, the barrister and peer, to launch the “Coalition For Marriage”, a new cross-party campaign to designed derail the plans for homosexual marriage.

A clutch of Church of England bishops and other Christian groups have already pledged their support for the alliance which is seeking hundreds of thousands of signatures on a petition to maintain the current definition of marriage.

Crucially, the leadership of the Roman Catholic Church yesterday threw its support behind the campaign, raising the prospect of support from the more than a million devout Catholics in England and Wales.

It is understood that leading bishops are considering issuing a pastoral letter to parishes across urging them to support the campaign.

...Peter Tatchell, the homosexual rights campaigner, condemned the new coalition as "intolerant and out of touch”. "The ban on same-sex marriage is discrimination,” he said. “It violates the democratic principle that everyone should be equal before the law.”

...Speaking on behalf of the Roman Catholic church, the Archbishop of Southwark, the Most Rev Peter Smith, said: "Marriage is a fundamental institution and neither the state nor the church has the right to redefine its meaning.

Amen. I’m glad to read there’s some Christian resistance to this. I can’t imagine formerly Great Britain’s ever growing number of Mohammedans are too happy about this either.

On reading the article you'll see that it's not just the Catholics, but also various conservative denominations and even (shock to me) the Church of England.

I wish everyone woke up earlier, but better late than never...

Just as with OUR elections, we must all (Catholics, Presbyterians, Pentecostals, Baptists etc.) stand firmly behind the conservative candidate (whether it be Palin or Santorum or Gingrich) against Obama and O-Gop: Romney

Lord Brennan is president of the Catholic Union of Great Britain, which presents a Christian viewpoint on public issues in secular Britain.

You hit the nail on the head: marriage is NOT a right.
Laws are based on morality. Morality is the doing of a society, based on God's commandments, that is, doctrine. They go hand in hand: doctrine/dogma from God and the ensuing behavior, moral behavior.

Marriage was man and woman. The Gaystoppo wants to change the absolute of this. What unbelievable arrogance.
The Panzer Pope got it right: moral relativism is the scourge of our day.

“Marriage is a fundamental institution and neither the state nor the church has the right to redefine its meaning.”

When the state is involved, at least in the modern era, the state’s definition is simply going to be whatever judges, pols, or the majority think it can be at any one time. How can it be anything else? And now many have been conditioned to think that the institution comes from the state, so they will accept whatever the state says marriage can be.

“Now, since the family and human society at large spring from marriage, these men will on no account allow matrimony to be the subject of the jurisdiction of the Church. Nay, they endeavor to deprive it of all holiness, and so bring it within the contracted sphere of those rights which, having been instituted by man, are ruled and administered by the civil jurisprudence of the community. Wherefore it necessarily follows that they attribute all power over marriage to civil rulers, and allow none whatever to the Church; and, when the Church exercises any such power, they think that she acts either by favor of the civil authority or to its injury. Now is the time, they say, for the heads of the State to vindicate their rights unflinchingly, and to do their best to settle all that relates to marriage according as to them seems good.”

—Pope Leo XIII about a hundred and thirty years ago.

Remember, with the left, the issue as presented is always a coverup for the agenda.

They don’t really want to be “married” and have it recognized as a “marriage”.

They want the concept of marriage to be destroyed.

Two men or two women (or any other assemblage) can go to some churches, or a Wiccan officiant, or call up their friend with cool Doctoral robes from a Central European university ... and go through a ceremony and consider themselves married. It’s not illegal, and nobody will attempt to prevent them. Their close friends and ideological allies will surely be happy for them and recognize them as a “married couple.”

What they cannot do, without the coercive power of government to back them, is force everyone else to recognize them as a married couple. “Homosexual marriage” as a public state is an exercise of pure government bludgeon-power, forcing the vast majority of people to go against their consciences, their common sense, and the overwhelming weight of real-world results.
