Catholic Church News Image of Leading Jesuit college sacks dissident professor

Several students are protesting the decision by Boston College to not renew the contract of an adjunct professor in its School of Theology and Ministry who has openly questioned why the Catholic church won’t ordain women.

The Boston College mission statement on its website talks about the Jesuit foundation of the school that makes it unique. It reads: “No other institution so explicitly embodies the fundamental human desire to know.”

But after Father John Shea, a professor of pastoral care and counseling, asked church leaders for a theological explanation for why women are not being ordained to the priesthood of the Catholic church, he was let go. After nine years, Shea will leave his position at the end of this semester. He refused to comment.

The school says, as a matter of policy, it does not discuss personnel decisions. But several of the BC students who are protesting the decision say there’s a climate of intolerance at the Jesuit university around openly discussing sensitive issues such as the ordination of women.

“I think the reason he was let go was because he was causing trouble,” said John Falcone, who worked as a graduate assistant with Shea.

Last year Shea wrote directly to Cardinal Sean O’Malley, telling him that he would step aside from active ministry until women are allowed to be ordained. Falcone says Shea has since paid a price for this position.

Fr. Shea should consider moving to the American Catholic Church, which embraces female priests. He would feel more at home in that church.

A miracle at Barely Catholic.

Twenty years ago, my wife and I helped to organize a debate on abortion between Peter Kreeft and an openly Marxist professor of sociology from BC. Guess which BC professor was surrounded by a bunch of student groupies?

It wasn’t the good one.

That's wierd. Peter Kreeft rocks and I though he had a pretty strong following. His books are great especially his commentary on Pascal's Pensees.

Excuse me...

was he "let go," or was his "contract not renewed?"

Second they need to review the Supreme Court Case from January.

Landmark Supreme Court ruling a 'resounding win' for religious groups

Let us pray for a TOTAL cleansing of all schools and universities that claim to be “Catholic.”

I will join with you in that prayer even though I am not Catholic.

This is a good first step. ALL CATHOLIC INSTITUTIONS should not only throw out all teachers not in line with the teachings of the Church but seriously start to question the incoming students. Why? Sandra Fluke.

If the left and the Obama Administration are going to try and force their beliefs onto a religious institution and onto religious people illegally, then it's about time those same institutions THROW OUT the children and supporters of that same forced moral relativism. FIGHT BACK!

I imagine that the Marxist enlisted support (his supporters were loud and obnoxious —surprise!), and the kids probably saw themselves as rebels.(Gee, a Marxist collegiate —yawn).

Kreeft ran circles around the guy. I was almost embarrassed for him. Almost.

Interestingly, we contacted EVERY high-profile liberal media person and professor in the area, and they all turned us down.

A PR move. If he was an adjunct, it means non-tenured. They are contracted semester-by-semester, though possibly he might have had some arrangement more steady than that, but certainly not protection of tenure. So he can readily be non-renewed.

And yes, if he was on a sessional contracts, then he was not “fired” but simply not contracted again. Sessional positions have no presumption of renewal, though de facto he may well have been treated as a steady renewal and this breaks that.

But it’s mostly inconsequential as far as BC is concerned—a PR plus for the broad middle of the constituency and the only downside is with the really radical feminists who haven’t given up on women’s ordination yet (despite infallible papal pronouncements in 1976 and 1994, clarified as irreformable by a later official response to a “dubium” [request for clarification]).

If Obama is reelected, the American Catholic Church will be the only legal form of Catholic worship allowed.

The failure of the Church to solve the problem of the “dissidents”, who are innumerable and who have infiltrated every single sector of Catholic society in America has left the Church open to a government-sponsored revolution, a hostile takeover by traitor bishops and clergy - and that’s exactly what’s going to happen.
