Are Mitt Romney’s Mormon beliefs something we should worry about?
Charlotte City Buzz Examiner (Examiner.com) ^ | March 21, 2012 | Robert Tilford

Mormons are not Christians in the traditional sense. They hold queer beliefs that would shock many people. Some of these beliefs are downright racist and have some black leaders in Charlotte, N.C. very worried what could happen if Romney manages to get elected as President of the United States. Mormon literature says "dark skinned people" are from "the seed of Cain." "According to this doctrine, it is forbidden to have “interracial marriages” with black people and those that do, will be “cursed” …

Their doctrine said the Negro race is cursed as we come from “the seed of Cain."

Yet Romney has said he is proud of his Mormon faith. "I am very proud of my faith and the faith of my fathers," Romney said. "Well, it's true and I love my faith. And I will… distance myself in any way from my faith."

WE SHOULD QUESTION CANDIDATES RELIGIOUS BELIEFS

Bill McKeever, founder of Mormonism Research Ministry, a Evangelical Christian ministry challenging the claims of Mormonism, said "people need to ask themselves if Romney's Mormonism will affect them personally, and if so, in what way."

McKeever said it is not rare for Mormons to excuse the comments of their past leaders by classifying them as "speculation or opinion."

"To imply that the ban on blacks holding the priesthood was mere ‘policy' is also misleading," McKeever said.

Jabriel Ballentine, seminarian at Virginia Theological Seminary, said “everyone should question the beliefs of all the candidates”.

"We might not agree with all of the beliefs of any candidate. However, we must pay attention to the implications of one enacting their beliefs," Ballentine said.

SNIP

...The Mormons famously put their heresy this way: “As man is now, God once was. As God is now, man may become.”

A visit from a very nice pair of Mormon young men got me to reading about the religion as well. I concluded the same thing you did, that it is a fake religion made up by a really strange guy. Good for you for figuring it out. I have doubts about Romney because HE hasn’t figured it out yet. I will vote for him but I won’t be happy about it.

"At least he wouldn’t need a third airplane for his dog when he goes traveling. Mormons don’t consider dogs unclean."

No, Willard would just stick the dog in a crate and put it on top of the plane.

Nobody seems to have what it would take to galvanize enough people to remove the tentacles so deep in this political system they abuse.

There is such a person that is madly fearer by establishment Republicans.

That person is Sarah Palin, and she's playing her Republican nominee capability quite wisely.

Just my opinion ... Go Sarah!

Romney isn’t going to use his Mormonism to go after black people. That’s how Obama and Jones think about the white, but not Romney.

This from the same people who give credence to Farakhan’s fairy tale of the Mothership.

There are only two cults I worry about: Muslims and Mormons, as both were started by child-molesting murderers that subject women to harsh teatments. Both cults were started for power and sex.

As "goofy" as Mormon theology is it will not cause Romney to hurt the American people. Most Mormons are pretty good citizens, follow the Protestant ethic and try to be honest. Romney's failings are personal; i.e. lack of core political beliefs.

Most Mormons are pretty good citizens, follow the Protestant ethic and try to be honest.

Sorry...but if you think you can become a god, you're not being honest with yourself. And if you can't be honest with yourself, who can you be honest to?

As for being "good citizens," hey, if you were auditioning for full-blown godhood, you'd be on your best behavior, too!

As "goofy" as Mormon theology is it will not cause Romney to hurt the American people...Romney's failings are personal; i.e. lack of core political beliefs.

Sorry...but if in 2016 YOU entered the POTUS race...and declared privately plus indirectly (publicly) that you were in a "god in embryo" on your way to full-grown godhood, that would be rather telling in a # of ways:

(1) That you would have a very basic core personal identity crisis issue at hand -- you don't even know your nature and would-be nature.

(2) That you would have a horrific character flaw...and no, that character flaw wouldn't stop at the sheer pride and hubris of thinking you were on your way to being worshiped and prayed to by other beings.

(3) That you would have a HUGE basic discernment problem. You might do just fine as local "dog catcher" with that discernment issue; but THE leader of the free world?

Reid and Romney are both temple mormons, they beleive and swear to the same things.
Both have received awards for being good examples of what it is to be a mormon.
Their core is the same.
They are who they are because of mormonism not in spite of it.

As a former mormon, you should know then that Romney is who he is because of his mormonism not in spite of it, as all mormons as high in the corporation as Romney.

Before you dismiss mormonism, you should learn what it is.
Romney is as high in the lds corporation as one can go without being one of the “12”.
Romney is who he is because of his mormonism not in spite of it.

Romney isn’t going to use his Mormonism to go after black people

Listen. I'm a descendent from Mormons. Pre-1978 -- the year they made their change "official" re: blacks -- I didn't see them "go after black people" then, either.

What I have observed is the Mormon tendency to exclude blacks due to race. Let me give you some Mormon leader quotes as examples:

While there was no restriction on blacks joining the LDS Church, there was no direct effort to evangelize them. Apostle Bruce McConkie, writing in 1958, declared: Negroes in this life are denied the priesthood; under no circumstances can they hold this delegation of authority from the Almighty. The gospel message of salvation is not carried affirmatively to them . . . Negroes are not equal with other races where the receipt of certain spiritual blessings are concerned . . . (Mormon Doctrine, by Bruce McConkie, Bookcraft, 1958 edition, p. 477; changed in later editions). William E. Berrett, Vice Administrator of the Brigham Young University, explained: "...no direct efforts have been made to proselyte among them" (Mormonism and the Negro, by John J. Stewart, supplement by William E. Berrett, Horizon, 1978, part 2, p. 65).
Source + for more on this and the Mormon culture toward other races, see: Curse of Cain? Racism in the Mormon Church Part Three [Martin Luther King & Malcolm X 'Mormons?']

Romney is already an exclusionary kind of guy...he's already gone on record saying he wouldn't put a Muslim on his Cabinet: Remember when Romney said he wouldn’t put a Muslim in the cabinet? He made his Mormonism relevant

And if Romney could/can make such political decisions on the basis of somebody's religion (just as most FREEPERS would be wary of a Muslim POTUS candidate), why do Mormons somehow think that religion is suddenly "irrelevant?"

Romney was 31 in 1978. For his first 13 adult years, not a seeming "peep" over the Mormon church's exclusionary doctrines, beliefs & tactics.

That tells me that Romney will just "go along" with whatever his leaders tell him (to do)...or NOT (to do).

So, you actually have it backwards: It's not...
...Romney using his Mormonism to necessarily do anything.
Instead, one of the threats is...
...Mormonism (more specifically, his "prophet"...
...somebody we probably don't even know much about...'cause we could be talking about 2016 or 2019)...
...using Romney to...[fill in the blank]

You won’t get a straight answer from the anth-Mormons about that. There will be, however, talk of a White Horse that Romney may be riding on at some point.

Also, there will be a heapin helping of anti-Mormon spam soon to follow, complete with fancy fonts and BOLD print and maybe some nice pictures.

My advice to you: run !!!!

Both left and right are going to ream Etch-A-Sketch a new one as soon as he gets the nomination. He was never vetted by Republicans on the Mormon cult issue, this will haunt us.

I am speaking empirically upon my personal experience with Mormons. You are speaking theoretically. For example, the Ancient Greek and Roman theology was silly and was recognized as such by their own thinkers. However, there were many ancient Greeks and Romans who were fine people some of them left writings that we read today as good examples. Many Mormon beliefs are absolutely silly as you frequently point out yet in some way Mormons are generally good folks.
