Cardinal Dolan criticizes Obama contraception policy as ‘radical intrusion' (still)

Bully for him. Earlier, I would have laid odds that he would have backed down by now.

I am pretty sure Dolan did not use the phrase “have access to contraception.” Having access to contraception is not the issue. Everyone has access to contraception and will continue to do so. The objection of Dolan and the Catholic Church is being made to supply and pay for contraceptive and abortifacient drugs. Trust the press to twist this so it looks as though the Church and the Republican Party are trying to keep everyone from being able to buy condoms and birth control pills.

Anything a person is reported to have said, unless it's in quotes, must be assumed to be a paraphrase, heavy on the reporter's personal opinions.

Even if it's in quotes, you can't be sure they didn't change it, and always watch for elipses (...) and quotes of a few words connected by non-quote material. "If I said" those words and then a while later, they include a quote where I also said "something else," it's entirely possible that I didn't even say the two quoted sections in the same order they appear, after rewonking with leftist filler.

I don't know Dolan's position on it (other than he's always been against it due to abortion coverage...but what would his position be w/o abortion? Don't know for sure)

Not all of the Bishops supported it, though. There were many of them who came out in opposition to it because of the principle of subsidiarity. Archbishop Neumann (KC KS) and Bishop Finn (KC MO) issued a long statement on it. Archbishop Chaput (formerly Denver, no Phila) spoke at length about it, as did Archbishop Nienstedt (St Paul), Bishops Nickless (Sioux City), Doran (Rockford), Slattery (Tulsa) and Johnston (Springfield-Cape Girardeu) also spoke eloquently as well. Salvation has the list and I have pinged her.

Like I said, though, not sure where Dolan was (other than he would have been opposed due to abortion coverage).

I do think that because of Obamamessiah, the Catholic Church is waking up, and changes will now be in the offing.

Q: What is the message you intend to bring to your fellow bishops when you discuss the practical and pastoral implications of political support for abortion during the assembly in Baltimore?

A: Any message to my fellow bishops should probably be shared with them first, and not the general public.

Q: Do you expect a new document or guidelines from the USSCB about Catholic politicians who support abortion and their fitness to receive Communion? If not, what do you expect?

A: I’ve said for the past decade that the 1998 bishops’ pastoral letter, “Living the Gospel of Life,” is the best guide to American Catholic political responsibilities the bishops have ever produced.

I think we need to take a hard look at whether the periodic “Faithful Citizenship” documents should be retired permanently.

We need a new approach to conscience formation in the public square. “Faithful Citizenship” didn’t and doesn’t work because it’s been applied by different people in very different ways.

Q If a majority of Catholics vote for Obama, who supports legalized abortion, should the bishops be held responsible in part for this?

A People have free will. Bishops will always have limited influence over the decision-making of adults. But it’s also true that Catholics have been much too optimistic about our role in American culture for the past 40 years.

Catholics, including many bishops, have been naïve. We’ve been homogenized and digested by the society around us. Bishops need to take responsibility for allowing that to happen.

Q If Obama wins, what should the bishops say about Joe Biden? Is it a problem for the Catholic Church to have its two pro-choice politicians occupying the vice-presidency and the role of House Speaker? If so, what should be done about it?

A The problems with the “pro-choice” behavior of Speaker Pelosi and now Vice President-elect Biden are serious and have not been resolved by this election. I think for the moment we can leave it at that.”

As I said, I don't have the list. Salvation does...and she's in the Pacific Time Zone, so she very well may not be back from Mass yet.

I didn't think Dolan was very strong in the following link; in fact I was disappointed. Both Rick and Kennedy can't both be correct and he was too positive on Romney too. In my mind there's nothing wrong with voting against someone because they are a Mormon, especially when an orthodox Catholic is running against him. Link.

I have read through the first 13 messages, and I see that sevesl reference the fact that the bishops supported a national health care system.

First - not all of the bishops were for a single-payer system, although many have promoted a more comprehensive system to include all the indigent people in this country. That being acknowledged - the bishops were speaking to the Obama administration for the past two years regarding the necessity of having a conscience clause. These meeting occurred regularly, and Obama, personally, promised that religious faith and conscience would be honored. As late as Novmenber 2011, this was the case.

Fast forward to Jan. 2012 when Obama called Cardinal Dolan and told him there would be no conscience clause. You might classify this moment as a “Road to Damascus” moment for many of the bishops. No doubt there were others who were not surprised (which was why they had questioned th administration so forcefully).

So, the real question now is how many bishops will remain in step with Cardinal Dolan in this matter? How many of the bishops actually had a literal conversion experience here, and now realize they cannot bargain with a dishonest and disrespectful man? The jury is still out. We need to pray to the Holy Spirit to stiffen the spines of many of the middle-of-the road Bishops. They need to decide exactly who they have allegiance to - the Christian faith which represents the truth - or to some mythical socialistic ideal.
