Some more strangeness: The Bishop of Salisbury, Nicholas Holtam, compared bishops opposing marriage reforms to 18th century Christians who believed slavery was "God-given."

Yes, the funny thing is that the slave-holding “Christians” wouldn’t permit blacks to read the bible, or else they’d start believing that slavery was wrong. Meanwhile the KKK and the core of the Confederate power structure were from the southern jurisdiction of the Scottish Rite of Freemasons, which were pagan, not Christian. (Washington was a freemason, and was a Christian, but his Freemasonry had only 3 rituals, not the 33 of the Scottish Rite.)
