DENVER, CO, April 23, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Prayerbooks, rosaries, and pro-life pamphlets are a common sight outside Planned Parenthoods massive facility in downtown Denver, but this year, local organizers of this springs Forty Days for Life campaign decided that one last piece was missing to bring the light of Christ to the countrys second largest abortion facility: the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
The idea to celebrate the Catholic Mass in front of Planned Parenthood came from Fr. Joseph Hearty, Assistant Pastor at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in nearby Littleton, who felt that it was time to pull out the big guns. It was, he told LifeSiteNews, an inspiration from the Holy Spirit.
If we can pray the rosary, why not offer the Mass, why not use the Mass and the Eucharist as a means of fighting this tragedy, he said. Why not use the most powerful means that we have?
As it turned out, the idea energized the local pro-life community far beyond what organizers had expected. Fr. Hearty planned for thirty attendees at his first Mass on March 3rd, and got a hundred.
Providentially, an empty parking lot right across the street from the Planned Parenthood owned by a pro-life couple was big enough to accommodate the crowd.
As a member of the traditional Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter, Fr. Hearty celebrated the traditional Latin Mass, known as the Tridentine Mass. Diocesan priests have also gotten in on the action, though, with six different Masses offered in the parking lot during the Forty Day campaign in English and Spanish. All six Masses were well attended, averaging between fifty and a hundred persons.
A March 31st closing rally kicked off with a Spanish Mass, followed by a rosary led by Bishop James Conley, apostolic administrator for the Denver Archdiocese. In comments at the rally, Bishop Conley urged pro-lifers to vigilance as Planned Parenthood continues to build megaplex death mills across the country, the Denver Catholic Register reports.
According to the Register, over 300 people attended the rally, which ended with a second Latin Mass celebrated by Fr. Hearty. There were so many at the final Mass that the priest returned to the altar four times to break up the hosts for distribution before finally running out.
The popularity of the idea, says Fr. Hearty, is a sign that people really want to do something. He hopes the idea will spread, and in particular that clergy in other parts of the country will be inspired to become more involved in pro-life work.
Thats our vocation, he said. Were there to mediate, and were there to lead, and were there to encourage.
As for the effort in Denver, organizers are hoping to build on the momentum and establish a regular schedule of Masses in front of the clinic, continuing to wage spiritual warfare against the nations largest abortion provider.
Our fight is not against the world, its against principalities and darkness, its against evil, it is against the devil, says Fr. Hearty. Why not make a few demons quake?
Taking it to the streets.
EXACTLY!
WOW - the TLM in close proximity to that unholy site!? No doubt the good Father was right - there were quaking demons!
Good for him! And were it so that more priests and bishops would show that kind of leadership and direct action!
As a member of the traditional Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter, Fr. Hearty celebrated the traditional Latin Mass, known as the Tridentine Mass.
. . . and I really cheered! :)
An exorcism would have been more appropriate.
Wow.
That place is doomed LOL
indeed! shivers down my spine.
Well, that’s not really in downtown Denver, but it’s the thought that counts.
Father Welch, who used to be with HLI, wrote about praying the exorcism prayers during vigils at abortion clinics. The reaction of clinic workers and pro-death demonstrators would be, he said, absolutely insane.
God bless this priest. Every priest in every town where there is a planned un-parenthood needs to follow suit.
Wonderful! This is spiritual warfare at its base for the killing of the unborn is a demonic agenda.
So many lives lost...
Pro-lifers celebrate Mass across from Planned Parenthood headquarters
By Julie Filby
More than 300 people gathered at Denvers Planned Parenthood headquarters for a morning prayer vigil and two Masses on March 31 to close the most recent 40 Days for Life campaign.
In the rugged parking lot across Pontiac Street from the organizations second largest facility, some bowed their heads, some raised their eyes to heaven, and othersseemingly overwroughtheld their heads in their hands as they prayed for an end to abortion.
Planned Parenthood is the largest provider of abortions in the country.
Its hard being here, said Tim Hall, a parishioner of Holy Trinity Church in Westminster who attended the rally with his wife, Josey, and 8-year-old daughter Jordan. I feel it emotionally its good to be here to pray.
Forty Days for Life is a grassroots initiative of prayer, fasting, outreach and constant vigil at abortion clinics. For the local 40 Days campaign, which started Feb. 22, this was the first time Masses were celebrated outside the northwest Denver facility.
This idea (to celebrate Mass on-site) was certainly an inspiration of the Holy Ghost, said Father Joseph Hearty, F.S.S.P., parochial vicar at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Latin Rite Parish, who celebrated Mass at the rally. It seems to me that we are in drastic times now, so time to pull out the big guns.
If we are saddled with the second largest abortion mill in the country than we need to start using greater means to help in the battle against the principalities and powers of this world.
Rosalinda Lozano, Denver 40 Days for Life coordinator, said six Masses were celebrated over the 40-day effort.
The priests really got on board (this campaign); its been a real blessing, she said. The most powerful weapon offered in the battle between good and evil is the holy Mass.
At the closing rally, Father Salvador Cisneros from Ascension Parish in Denver celebrated Mass in Spanish at 8 a.m.; Bishop James D. Conley, apostolic administrator for the Denver Archdiocese, led a rosary and pro-life litany at 10 a.m.; then Father Hearty celebrated the extraordinary form of the Masscommonly called the Tridentine Mass, which is said in Latinat 11 a.m.
Additional Masses were celebrated on-site other days during the campaign by Father Piotr Mozdyniewicz, pastor of Shrine of St. Anne Church in Arvada; Msgr. Bernard Schmitz, pastor of Mother of God Church in Denver and liaison for clergy for the archdiocese; and Father John Paul Leyba, pastor of Holy Trinity Church in Westminster.
Bishop Conley said pro-lifers must remain vigilant despite the closing of some abortion clinics.
Planned Parenthood made a strategic decision to close small clinics and build huge megaplex death mills, he said.
In May 2010, the organization opened the countrys largest abortion clinic in Houston, a seven-story, 78,000-square-foot facility. Denvers three-story, 50,000-square-foot space opened July 2008. Recently, ground broke on a 19,000-square-foot facility in Fort Worth, a building three times larger than its current building according to the Planned Parenthood website.
Our enemies are bigger than us, said Father Hearty, But God is bigger than them.
I believe that seeing so many people in reverent devotion and prayer during the Mass will hopefully touch (those) driving into the clinic and those working in the abortion mill, he said.
Patty Ketchel, a parishioner of St. Louis Church in Louisville, attended her first vigil at the clinic wearing a T-shirt with a photo of a smiling baby that read: My grandson survived an abortion.
His birth mother was a heroine(sic) addict, she said, welling up as she spoke of her grandson Gabriel. She went in to abort the baby, and by the grace of God she didnt and my son and his wife adopted him.
Gabriels parents, George and Beverly Ketchel of Broomfield, had been working with adoption agencies; most had waiting lists longer than five years.
They decided to sign up for an at-risk baby, explained Ketchel.
Gabriel, now 11, is a blessing to their family.
Hes precious, she said. When he goes to church he lights a candle for his birth mother.
He prays for her all the time, for giving him life.
Actually not. The Mass is infinitely more powerful than an exorcism, which is after all only a “sacramental” ... a blessing. In an exorcism, a demon is commanded to leave in the name of Christ. In the Mass, Christ himself and his sacrificial death, which destroyed the power of the devil forever, is made present.
How wonderful!
I am not a Catholic, but when I look at the steadfast stand for life by sincere Catholics, I just stand in amazement and admiration for their witness and courage. May God bless this work and these servants of His.
Praise Jesus!!! Amen! So Be It!!
