Monday of the Seventh Week of Easter
While Apollos was in Corinth,
Paul traveled through the interior of the country
and down to Ephesus where he found some disciples.
He said to them,
"Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?"
They answered him,
"We have never even heard that there is a Holy Spirit."
He said, "How were you baptized?"
They replied, "With the baptism of John."
Paul then said, "John baptized with a baptism of repentance,
telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him,
that is, in Jesus."
When they heard this,
they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
And when Paul laid his hands on them,
the Holy Spirit came upon them,
and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.
Altogether there were about twelve men.
He entered the synagogue, and for three months debated boldly
with persuasive arguments about the Kingdom of God.
R. (33a) Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth.
or:
R. Alleluia.
God arises; his enemies are scattered,
and those who hate him flee before him.
As smoke is driven away, so are they driven;
as wax melts before the fire.
R. Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth.
or:
R. Alleluia.
But the just rejoice and exult before God;
they are glad and rejoice.
Sing to God, chant praise to his name;
whose name is the LORD.
R. Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth.
or:
R. Alleluia.
The father of orphans and the defender of widows
is God in his holy dwelling.
God gives a home to the forsaken;
he leads forth prisoners to prosperity.
R. Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth.
or:
R. Alleluia.
The disciples said to Jesus,
"Now you are talking plainly, and not in any figure of speech.
Now we realize that you know everything
and that you do not need to have anyone question you.
Because of this we believe that you came from God."
Jesus answered them, "Do you believe now?
Behold, the hour is coming and has arrived
when each of you will be scattered to his own home
and you will leave me alone.
But I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
I have told you this so that you might have peace in me.
In the world you will have trouble,
but take courage, I have conquered the world."

From: Acts 19:1-8
Disciples of John the Baptist at Ephesus
[1] While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the upper country and
came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples. [2] And he said to them, “Did
you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, we have ne-
ver even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” [3] And he said, “Into what then were
you baptized?” They said, “Into John’s baptism.” [4] And Paul said, “John bap-
tized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who
was to come after him, that is, Jesus.” [5] On hearing this, they were baptized in
the name of the Lord Jesus. [6] And when Paul had laid his hands upon them,
the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. [7]
There were about twelve of them in all.
Paul’s Preaching and Miracles at Ephesus
[8] And he entered the synagogue and for three months spoke boldly, arguing
and pleading about the kingdom of God.
*********************************************************************************************
Commentary:
1-7. This presence in Ephesus of a group of disciples who had received only
John’s baptism is open to various interpretations. The text seems to imply that
they were not, properly speaking, Christians but people who followed the Bap-
tist’s teaching and whom Paul regarded as incipient Christians, to the point of cal-
ling them disciples. We say this because in the New Testament being a Christian
is always connected with receiving Baptism and having the Holy Spirit (cf. Jn 3:5;
Rom 8:9; 1 Cor 12:3; Gal 3:2; Acts 11:17; etc.).
2. Leaving aside questions as to the origin and composition of this group of dis-
ciples, their simple statement about knowing nothing about the Holy Spirit and
his part in fulfilling the messianic promises points to the need to preach Chris-
tian doctrine in a systematic, gradual and complete way.
Christian catechesis, Bl. John Paul II reminds us, “must be systematic, not im-
provised but programmed to reach a precise goal; it must deal with essentials,
without any claim to tackle all disputed questions or to transform itself into theo-
logical research or scientific exegesis; it must nevertheless be sufficiently com-
plete, not stopping short at the initial proclamation of the Christian mystery such
as we have in the kerygma; it must be an integral Christian initiation, open to all
the other factors of Christian life” (”Catechesi Tradendae”, 21).
3-4. “The whole teaching and work of John,” St Thomas Aquinas writes, “was in
preparation for Christ, as the helper and under-craftsman are responsible for pre-
paring the materials for the form which the head-craftsman produces. Grace was
to be conferred on men through Christ: ‘Grace and truth have come through Jesus
Christ’ (Jn 1 :17). And therefore, the baptism of John did not confer grace, but on-
ly prepared the way for grace in a threefold way—in one way, by John’s teaching,
which led men to faith in Christ; in another way, by accustoming men to the rite
of Christ’s Baptism; and in a third way, through penance, which prepared men to
receive the effect of Christ’s Baptism” (”Summa Theologiae”, III, q. 38, a. 3).
5. “They were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus”: the view of most com-
mentators is that this does not mean that the Trinitarian formula which appears
in Mt 28:19 (cf. note on Acts 2:38) (”in the name of the Father and of the Son
and of the Holy Spirit”) was not used. The reference here may simply be a way
of distinguishing Christian Baptism from other baptismal rites which were fea-
tures of Judaism in apostolic times—particularly John the Baptist’s rite. Besides,
Christian Baptism was administered on Jesus Christ’s instructions (cf. Mt 28:
19), in union with him and using his power: Jesus’ redemptive action is initiated
by the Father and expresses itself in the full outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
6. This passage speaks of the laying on of hands, something distinct from Bap-
tism, as seen already in Acts 8:14-17, whereby the Holy Spirit is received. This
is the sacrament which will come to be called Confirmation and which has been
conferred, from the beginnings of the Church, as one of the sacraments of Chris-
tian initiation.
Referring to Confirmation, Bl. John Paul II has said: “Christ’s gift of the Holy Spi-
rit is going to be poured out upon you in a particular way. You will hear the words
of the Church spoken over you, calling upon the Holy Spirit to confirm your faith,
to seal you in his love, to strengthen you for his service. You will then take your
place among fellow-Christians throughout the world, full citizens now of the Peo-
ple of God. You will witness to the truth of the Gospel in the name of Jesus
Christ. You will live your lives in such a way as to make holy all human life. To-
gether with all the confirmed, you will become living stones in the cathedral of
peace. Indeed you are called by God to be instruments of his peace [...].
“You, too, are strengthened inwardly today by the gift of the Holy Spirit, so that
each of you in your own way can carry the Good News to your companions and
friends. [...]. The same Holy Spirit comes to you today in the sacrament of Con-
firmation, to involve you more completely in the Church’s fight against sin and in
her mission of fostering holiness. He comes to dwell more fully in your hearts
and to strengthen you for the struggle with evil [...]. The world of today needs you,
for it needs men and women who are filled with the Holy Spirit. It needs your cou-
rage and hopefulness, your faith and your perseverance. The world of tomorrow
will be built by you. Today you receive the gift of the Holy Spirit so that you may
work with deep faith and with abiding charity, so that you may help to bring to the
world the fruits of reconciliation and peace. Strengthened by the Holy Spirit and
his manifold gifts [...], strive to be unselfish; try not to be obsessed with material
things” (”Homily at Coventry Airport”, 30 May 1982).
As is the case with Baptism and Holy Orders, Confirmation imprints an indelible
mark or character on the soul.
8-10. This summarized account of Paul’s activity in Ephesus is filled out by the
account we are given of the Apostle’s farewell to the elders of that city (cf. 20:
18-35) and by information contained in his letters to the Corinthians. Paul made
Ephesus the base for his missionary work in the surrounding region, for which
he counted on help from Timothy, Erastus, Gaius, Titus and Epaphras of Colos-
sae.
During his stay in Ephesus he wrote 1 Corinthians and the Letter to the Gala-
tians.
8. Paul returns to the synagogue where he taught previously (cf. 18:19-21); the
Jews’ resistance and lack of understanding do not lessen his zeal.

Fullness of Joy (Continuation)
[29] His (Jesus’) disciples said, “Ah, now You are speaking plainly, not in any
figure! [30] Now we know that You know all things, and need none to question
You; by this we believe that You came from God.” [31] Jesus answered them,
“Do you now believe? [32] The hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you
will be scattered, every man to his home, and will leave Me alone; yet I am not
alone, for the Father is with Me. [33] I have said this to you, that in Me you may
have peace. In the world you have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have over-
come the world.”
*********************************************************************************************
Commentary:
25-30. As can be seen also from other passages in the Gospels, Jesus spent
time explaining His doctrine in more detail to His Apostles than to the crowd (cf.
Mark 4:10-12 and paragraph) — to train them for their mission of preaching the
Gospel to the whole world (cf. Matthew 28:18-20). However, our Lord also used
metaphors or parables when imparting instruction to the Apostles, and He does
so in this discourse of the Last Supper—the vine, the woman giving birth, etc.:
He stimulates their curiosity and they, because they do not understand, ask Him
questions (cf. verses 17-18). Jesus now tells them that the time is coming when
He will speak to them in a completely clear way so that they will know exactly
what He means. This He will do after the Resurrection (cf. Acts 1:3). But even
now, since He knows their thoughts, He is making it ever plainer to them that
He is God, for only God can know what is happening inside someone (cf. 2:25).
Verse 28, “I came from the Father and have come into the world; again, I am lea-
ving the world and going to the Father” summarizes the mystery of Christ’s Per-
son (cf. John 1 14; 20:31).
31-32. Jesus moderates the Apostles’ enthusiasm, which expresses itself in a
spontaneous confession of faith; He does this by asking them a question which
has two dimensions. On the one hand, it is a kind of reproach for their having
taken too long to believe in Him: it is true that there were other occasions when
they expressed faith in the Master (cf. John 6:68-69; etc.), but until now they
have not fully realized that He is the One sent by the Father. The question also
refers to the fragility of their faith: they believe, and yet very soon they will aban-
don Him into the hands of His enemies. Jesus requires us to have a firm faith:
it is not enough to show it in moments of enthusiasm, it has to stand the test
of difficulties and opposition.
33. The Second Vatican Council teaches in connection with this passage: “The
Lord Jesus who said ‘Be of good cheer, I have overcome the world’ (John 16:33),
did not by these words promise complete victory to His Church in this world.
This sacred Council rejoices that the earth which has been sown with the seed
of the Gospel is now bringing forth fruit in many places under the guidance of the
Spirit of the Lord, who is filling the world” (”Presbyterorum Ordinis”, 22).

When he asked, Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers? they answered, No, we were never even told there was such a thing as a Holy Spirit. Then how were you baptised? he asked. I came from the Father
and have come into the world,
and now I leave the world
to go to the Father.

Since you have been brought back to true life with Christ,
you must look for the things that are in heaven, where Christ is,

His disciples said to Jesus, Now you are speaking plainly and not using metaphors! Now we see that you know everything, and do not have to wait for questions to be put into words; because of this we believe that you came from God. Jesus answered them:
Do you believe at last?
Listen; the time will come in fact it has come already
when you will be scattered,
each going his own way and leaving me alone.
And yet I am not alone,
because the Father is with me.
I have told you all this
so that you may find peace in me.
In the world you will have trouble,
but be brave: I have conquered the world.

PRAYERS AFTER
HOLY MASS AND COMMUNION
Leonine Prayers
Following are the Prayers after Low Mass which were prescribed by Pope Leo XIII who composed the Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel, and were reinforced by Pope Pius XI and Pope Pius XII to pray for the conversion of Russia. These prayers were in effect until after Vatican II. A decade later Paul VI said, "satan has entered the sanctuary." Could the elimination of these powerful prayers with a ten year indulgence have played a huge part in allowing the devil such easy access? The answer is obvious. Below the normal Leonine Prayers is the longer version of the Prayer to St. Michael, composed by His Excellency Pope Leo XIII to defend against The Great Apostasy.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. (Said 3 times) Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee to we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mouring and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this exile, show unto us the blessed Fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Let us pray. O God, our refuge and our strength, look down with mercy upon the people who cry to Thee; and by the intercession of the glorious and immaculate Virgin Mary, Mother of God, of Saint Joseph her spouse, of the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and of all the saints, in Thy mercy and goodness hear our prayers for the conversion of sinners, and for the liberty and exaltation of the Holy Mother the Church. Through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen. Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray: and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Have mercy on us. Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Have mercy on us. Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Have mercy on us. |

Complete Prayer to Saint Michael
The following is the longer version of the vital prayer composed by Pope Leo XIII in 1888 after his startling vision as to the future of the Church. This prayer was dedicated for the Feast of St. Michael 1448 years from the date of the election of the first Leo - Pope Saint Leo the Great. Everyone is familiar with the first prayer below which was mandated by His Holiness as part of the Leonine Prayers after Low Mass. After Vatican II, in legion with the devil Giovanni Montini outlawed this necessary prayer and then one wonders how "the smoke of satan" got into the sanctuary? The conciliarists wanted to make sure the words in bold below would never see the light of day again for in it Leo foretold what would happen: The shepherd would be struck, the sheep scattered. Below are both the short and longer versions of this poignant prayer which should never be forgotten.
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray, and do thou, O heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls. Amen.
O glorious Archangel Saint Michael, Prince of the heavenly host, be our defense in the terrible warfare which we carry on against principalities and powers, against the rulers of this world of darkness, spirits of evil. Come to the aid of man, whom God created immortal, made in His own image and likeness, and redeemed at a great price from the tyranny of the devil. Fight this day the battle of our Lord, together with the holy angels, as already thou hast fought the leader of the proud angels, Lucifer, and his apostate host, who were powerless to resist thee, nor was there place for them any longer in heaven. That cruel, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil or Satan who seduces the whole world, was cast into the abyss with his angels. Behold this primeval enemy and slayer of men has taken courage. Transformed into an angel of light, he wanders about with all the multitude of wicked spirits, invading the earth in order to blot out the Name of God and of His Christ, to seize upon, slay, and cast into eternal perdition, souls destined for the crown of eternal glory. That wicked dragon pours out. as a most impure flood, the venom of his malice on men of depraved mind and corrupt heart, the spirit of lying, of impiety, of blasphemy, and the pestilent breath of impurity, and of every vice and iniquity. These most crafty enemies have filled and inebriated with gall and bitterness the Church, the spouse of the Immaculate Lamb, and have laid impious hands on Her most sacred possessions. In the Holy Place itself, where has been set up the See of the most holy Peter and the Chair of Truth for the light of the world, they have raised the throne of their abominable impiety with the iniquitous design that when the Pastor has been struck the sheep may be scattered. Arise then, O invincible Prince, bring help against the attacks of the lost spirits to the people of God, and give them the victory. They venerate thee as their protector and patron; in thee holy Church glories as her defense against the malicious powers of hell; to thee has God entrusted the souls of men to be established in heavenly beatitude. Oh, pray to the God of peace that He may put Satan under our feet, so far conquered that he may no longer be able to hold men in captivity and harm the Church. Offer our prayers in the sight of the Most High, so that they may quickly conciliate the mercies of the Lord; and beating down the dragon, the ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, do thou again make him captive in the abyss, that he may no longer seduce the nations. Amen. V: Behold the Cross of the Lord; be scattered ye hostile powers. R: The Lion of the Tribe of Juda has conquered the root of David. V: Let Thy mercies be upon us, O Lord. R: As we have hoped in Thee. V: O Lord hear my prayer. R: And let my cry come unto Thee. V: Let us pray. O God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we call upon Thy holy Name, and as suppliants, we implore Thy clemency, that by the intercession of Mary, ever Virgin, immaculate and our Mother, and of the glorious Archangel Saint Michael, Thou wouldst deign to help us against Satan and all other unclean spirits, who wander about the world for the injury of the human race and the ruin of our souls. Amen.
Prayer Before the Crucifix
Look down upon me, O good and gentle Jesus, while before Thy face I humbly kneel, and with burning soul pray and beseech Thee to fix deep in my heart lively sentiments of faith, hope and charity, true contrition for my sins, and a firm purpose of amendment; the while I contemplate with great love and tender pity Thy five most precious wounds, pondering over them within me, calling to mind the words which David Thy prophet said of Thee, my good Jesus: "They have pierced My hands and My feet; they have numbered all My bones." Indulgence of ten years; a plenary indulgence if recited after devout reception of Holy Communion, Raccolta 201) Anima Christi - Soul of Christ
Soul of Christ, sanctify me. Body of Christ, save me. Blood of Christ, inebriate me. Water from the side of Christ, wash me. Passion of Christ, strengthen me. O Good Jesus, hear me. Within Thy wounds, hide me. Suffer me not to be separated from Thee. From the malignant enemy, defend me. In the hour of my death, call me. And bid me come to Thee, that with Thy saints I may praise Thee for ever and ever. Amen. Indulgence of 300 days; if recited after devout reception of Holy Communion, seven years Raccolta 131) Prayer for Vocations
O Lord Jesus Christ, Who didst take to Thyself a body and soul like ours, to teach us the glory of self-sacrifice and service, mercifully deign to instill in other hearts the desire to dedicate their lives to Thee. Give us PRIESTS to stand before Thine Altar and to preach the words of Thy Gospel; BROTHERS to assist the priests and to reproduce in themselves Thy humility; SISTERS to teach the young and nurse the sick and to minister Thy charity to all; LAY PEOPLE to imitate Thee in their homes and families. Amen.

Jesus, High Priest
We thank you, God our Father, for those who have responded to your call to priestly ministry.
Accept this prayer we offer on their behalf: Fill your priests with the sure knowledge of your love.
Open their hearts to the power and consolation of the Holy Spirit.
Lead them to new depths of union with your Son.
Increase in them profound faith in the Sacraments they celebrate as they nourish, strengthen and heal us.
Lord Jesus Christ, grant that these, your priests, may inspire us to strive for holiness by the power of their example, as men of prayer who ponder your word and follow your will.
O Mary, Mother of Christ and our mother, guard with your maternal care these chosen ones, so dear to the Heart of your Son.
Intercede for our priests, that offering the Sacrifice of your Son, they may be conformed more each day to the image of your Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
Saint John Vianney, universal patron of priests, pray for us and our priests
This icon shows Jesus Christ, our eternal high priest. The gold pelican over His heart represents self-sacrifice.
The border contains an altar and grapevines, representing the Mass, and icons of Melchizedek and St. Jean-Baptiste Vianney.
Melchizedek: king of righteousness (left icon) was priest and king of Jerusalem. He blessed Abraham and has been considered an ideal priest-king.
St. Jean-Baptiste Vianney is the patron saint of parish priests.

Pray a Rosary each day for our nation.
1. Sign of the Cross: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
2. The Apostles Creed: I BELIEVE in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
3. The Lord's Prayer: OUR Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
4. (3) Hail Mary: HAIL Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and in the hour of our death. Amen. (Three times)
5. Glory Be: GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Fatima Prayer: Oh, my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of your mercy.
Announce each mystery, then say 1 Our Father, 10 Hail Marys, 1 Glory Be and 1 Fatima prayer. Repeat the process with each mystery.
End with the Hail Holy Queen:
Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve! To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears! Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us; and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus!
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! Pray for us, O holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

~ PRAYER ~

St. Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle
Be our protection against the wickedness
and snares of the devil;
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host,
by the power of God,
Cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits
who prowl through the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen

May Devotion: Blessed Virgin Mary
|
Since the 16th century Catholic piety has assigned entire months to special devotions. Toward the end of the eighteenth century a zealous Jesuit priest, Father Lalomia, started among the students of the Roman college of his Society the practice of dedicating May to Our Lady. The devotion, which others had promoted in a small way, soon spread to other Jesuit Colleges and to the entire Latin church and since that time it has been a regular feature of Catholic life.
INVOCATIONS
Thou who wast a virgin before thy delivery, pray for us. Hail Mary, etc.
Thou who wast a virgin in thy delivery, pray for us. Hail Mary, etc.
Thou who wast a virgin after thy delivery, pray for us. Hail Mary, etc.
My Mother, deliver me from mortal sin.
Hail Mary (three times).
Mother of love, of sorrow and of mercy, pray for us.
Remember, O Virgin Mother of God, when thou shalt stand before the face of the Lord, that thou speak favorable things in our behalf and that He may turn away His indignation from us.
Roman Missal
Thou art my Mother, O Virgin Mary: keep me safe lest I ever offend thy dear Son, and obtain for me the grace to please Him always and in all things.
FOR THE HELP OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
May we be assisted, we beseech Thee, 0 Lord, by the worshipful intercession of Thy glorious Mother, the ever-Virgin Mary; that we, who have been enriched by her perpetual blessings, may be delivered from all dangers, and through her loving kindness made to be of one heart and mind: who livest and reignest world without end. Amen.
Roman Missal
THE SALVE REGINA
Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, hail, our life, our sweetness, and our hope!
Roman Breviary
PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
O blessed Virgin Mary, who can worthily repay thee thy just dues of praise and thanksgiving, thou who by the wondrous assent of thy will didst rescue a fallen world? What songs of praise can our weak human nature recite in thy honor, since it is by thy intervention alone that it has found
the way to restoration? Accept, then, such poor thanks as we have here to offer, though they be unequal to thy merits; and, receiving our vows, obtain by thy prayers the remission of our offenses. Carry thou our prayers within the sanctuary of the heavenly audience, and bring forth from it the antidote of our reconciliation. May the sins we bring before Almighty God through thee, become pardonable through thee; may what we ask for with sure confidence, through thee be granted. Take our offering, grant us our requests, obtain pardon for what we fear, for thou art the sole hope of sinners. Through thee we hope for the remission of our sins, and in thee, 0 blessed Lady, is our hope of reward. Holy Mary, succour the miserable, help the fainthearted, comfort the sorrowful, pray for thy people, plead for the clergy, intercede for all women consecrated to God; may all who keep thy holy commemoration feel now thy help and protection. Be thou ever ready to assist us when we pray, and bring back to us the answers to our prayers. Make it thy continual care to pray for the people of God, thou who, blessed by God, didst merit to bear the Redeemer of the world, who liveth and reigneth, world without end. Amen.
Saint Augustine
PETITION TO MARY
Most holy Virgin Immaculate, my Mother Mary, to thee who art the Mother of my Lord, the queen of the universe, the advocate, the hope, the refuge of sinners, I who am the most miserable of all sinners, have recourse this day. I venerate thee, great queen, and I thank thee for the many graces thou hast bestowed upon me even unto this day; in particular for having delivered me from the hell which I have so often deserved by my sins. I love thee, most dear Lady; and for the love I bear thee, I promise to serve thee willingly for ever and to do what I can to make thee loved by others also. I place in thee all my hopes for salvation; accept me as thy servant and shelter me under thy mantle, thou who art the Mother of mercy. And since thou art so powerful with God, deliver me from all temptations, or at least obtain for me the strength to overcome them until death. From thee I implore a true love for Jesus Christ. Through thee I hope to die a holy death. My dear Mother, by the love thou bearest to Almighty God, I pray thee to assist me always, but most of all at the last moment of my life. Forsake me not then, until thou shalt see me safe in heaven, there to bless thee and sing of thy mercies through all eternity. Such is my hope. Amen.
Saint Alphonsus Liguori

Magnificat Prayer My being proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit finds joy in God my savior, For he has looked upon his servant in her lowliness; all ages to come shall call me blessed. God who is mighty has done great things for me, holy is his name; His mercy is from age to age on those who fear him. He has shown might with his arm; he has confused the proud in their inmost thoughts. He has deposed the mighty from their thrones and raised the lowly to high places. The hungry he has given every good thing, while the rich he has sent empty away. He has upheld Israel his servant, ever mindful of his mercy; Even as he promised our fathers, promised Abraham and his descendants forever. (Lk 1:46-55) |
Seen above is the Blessed Virgin Mary, portrayed as Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
It was she who was chosen by God, to provide His Son with His Sacred Humanity.
She did so in humble and total cooperation with the Holy Spirit and the Divine will of the Holy Trinity; providing God's Son with the Blood He shed for us on the Cross.
TO MARY, REFUGE OF SINNERS
Hail, most gracious Mother of mercy, hail, Mary, for whom we fondly yearn, through whom we obtain forgiveness! Who would not love thee? Thou art our light in uncertainty, our comfort in sorrow, our solace in the time of trial, our refuge from every peril and temptation. Thou art our sure hope of salvation, second only to thy only-begotten Son; blessed are they who love thee, our Lady! Incline, I beseech thee, thy ears of pity to the entreaties of this thy servant, a miserable sinner; dissipate the darkness of my sins by the bright beams of thy holiness, in order that I may be acceptable in thy sight.
FOR THE GRACE OF LOVE
O Mary, my dear Mother, how much I love thee! And yet in reality how little! Thou dost teach me what I ought to know, for thou teachest me what Jesus is to me and what I ought to be for Jesus. Dearly beloved Mother, how close to God thou art, and how utterly filled with Him! In the measure that we know God, we remind ourselves of thee. Mother of God, obtain for me the grace of loving my Jesus; obtain for me the grace of loving thee!
Cardinal Merry del Val
TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY FOR MAY
O most august and blessed Virgin Mary! Holy Mother of God! glorious Queen of heaven and earth! powerful protectress of those who love thee, and unfailing advocate of all who invoke thee! look down, I beseech thee, from thy throne of glory on thy devoted child; accept the solemn offering I present thee of this month, specially dedicated to thee, and receive my ardent, humble desire, that by my love and fervor I could worthily honor thee, who, next to God, art deserving of all honor. Receive me, 0 Mother of Mercy, among thy best beloved children; extend to me thy maternal tenderness and solicitude; obtain for me a place in the Heart of Jesus, and a special share in the gifts of His grace. 0 deign, I beseech thee, to recognize my claims on thy protection, to watch over my spiritual and temporal interests, as well as those of all who are dear to me; to infuse into my soul the spirit of Christ, and to teach me thyself to become meek, humble, charitable, patient, and submissive to the will of God.
May my heart bum with the love of thy Divine Son, and of thee, His blessed Mother, not for a month alone, but for time and eternity; may I thirst for the promotion of His honor and thine, and contribute, as far as I can, to its extension. Receive me, 0 Mary, the refuge of sinners! Grant me a Mother's blessing and a Mother's care, now, and at the hour of my death. Amen.
TO OUR LADY
Saint John Vianney, better known as the Cure of Ars, when asked how long he had loved Mary, said: "I loved her almost before I could know her." In this prayer he expresses that love.
O thou most holy virgin Mary, who dost evermore stand before the most holy Trinity, and to whom it is granted at all times to pray for us to thy most beloved Son; pray for me in all my necessities; help me, combat for me, and obtain for me the pardon of all my sins. Help me especially at my last hour; and when I can no longer give any sign of the use of reason, then do thou encourage me, make the sign of the cross for me, and fight for me against the enemy. Make in my name a profession of faith; favor me with a testimony of my salvation, and never let me despair of the mercy of God. Help me to overthrow the wicked enemy. When I can no longer say: "Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, I place my soul in your hands," do thou say it for me; when I can no longer hear human words of consolation, do thou comfort me. Leave me not before I have been judged; and if I have to expiate my sins in purgatory, oh! pray for me earnestly; and admonish my friends to procure for me a speedy enjoyment of the blessed sight of God. Lessen my sufferings, deliver me speedily, and lead my soul into heaven with thee: that, united with all the elect, I may there bless and praise my God and thee for all eternity. Amen.
Saint John Vianney
ACT OF REPARATION
O blessed Virgin, Mother of God, look down in mercy from heaven, where thou art enthroned as Queen, upon me, a miserable sinner, thine unworthy servant. Although I know full well my own unworthiness, yet in order to atone for the offenses that are done to thee by impious and blasphemous
tongues, from the depths of my heart I praise and extol thee as the purest, the fairest, the holiest creature of all God's handiwork. I bless thy holy name, I praise thine exalted privilege of being truly Mother of God, ever virgin, conceived without stain of sin, co-redemptrix of the human race. I bless the Eternal Father who chose thee in an especial way for His daughter; I bless the Word Incarnate who took upon Himself our nature in thy bosom and so made thee His Mother; I bless the Holy Spirit who took thee as His bride. All honor, praise and thanksgiving to the ever-blessed Trinity, who predestined thee and loved thee so exceedingly from all eternity as to exalt thee above all creatures to the most sublime heights. 0 Virgin, holy and merciful, obtain for all who offend thee the grace of repentance, and graciously accept this poor act of homage from me thy servant, obtaining likewise for me from thy divine Son the pardon and remission of all my sins. Amen.

INVITATORY
The Invitatory is said when this is the first hour of the day.
Lord,
+ open my lips.
And my mouth will proclaim your praise.
Ant. Come, let us adore Christ the Lord who promised to send the Holy Spirit on his people, alleluia.
Psalm 95A call to praise God
Encourage each other daily while it is still today (Hebrews 3:13).
Come, let us sing to the Lord
* and shout with joy to the Rock who saves us.
Let us approach him with praise and thanksgiving
* and sing joyful songs to the Lord.
Ant. Come, let us adore Christ the Lord who promised to send the Holy Spirit on his people, alleluia.
The Lord is God, the mighty God,
* the great king over all the gods.
He holds in his hands the depths of the earth
* and the highest mountains as well.
He made the sea; it belongs to him,
* the dry land, too, for it was formed by his hands.
Ant. Come, let us adore Christ the Lord who promised to send the Holy Spirit on his people, alleluia.
Come, then, let us bow down and worship,
* bending the knee before the Lord, our maker.
For he is our God and we are his people,
* the flock he shepherds.
Ant. Come, let us adore Christ the Lord who promised to send the Holy Spirit on his people, alleluia.
Today, listen to the voice of the Lord:
*Do not grow stubborn, as your fathers did
in the wilderness,
*when at Meriba and Massah
they challenged me and provoked me,
*Although they had seen all of my works.
Ant. Come, let us adore Christ the Lord who promised to send the Holy Spirit on his people, alleluia.
Forty years I endured that generation.
*I said, They are a people whose hearts go astray
and they do not know my ways.
So I swore in my anger,
* They shall not enter into my rest.
Ant. Come, let us adore Christ the Lord who promised to send the Holy Spirit on his people, alleluia.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
*and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
*and will be for ever. Amen.
Ant. Come, let us adore Christ the Lord who promised to send the Holy Spirit on his people, alleluia.
If the Invitatory is not said, then the following is used:
God,
+ come to my assistance.
Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.
HYMN
Christ the Lord is risn today;
Christians, haste your vows to pay;
Offer you your praises meet
At the Paschal Victims feet.
For the sheep the Lamb has bled,
Sinless in the sinners stead;
Christ, the Lord, is risn on high,
Now he lives no more to die!
Christ, the Victim undefiled,
Man to God has reconciled;
When in strange and awful strife
Met together death and life;
Christians, on this happy day
Haste with joy your vows to pay.
Christ, the Lord, is risn on high,
Now he lives no more to die!
Christ, who once for sinners bled,
Now the firstborn from the dead,
Throned in endless might and power,
Lives and reigns forevermore.
Hail, eternal Hope on high!
Hail, our King of Victory!
Hail, our Prince of life adored!
Help and save us, gracious Lord.
Tune: Victimae Paschali Laudes 77.77 D
Music: Traditional, alt.
Text: Victimae Paschali Laudes, Wipo, eleventh century
Or:
The day of resurrection!
Earth spread the news abroad;
The Paschal feast of gladness,
The Paschal feast of God.
From death to life eternal,
From earth to heavens height
Our Savior Christ has brought us,
The glorious Lord of Light.
Our hearts be free from evil
That we may see aright
The Savior resurrected
In his eternal light;
And hear his message plainly,
Delivered calm and clear:
Rejoice with me in triumph,
Be glad and do not fear.
Now let the heavns be joyful,
And earth her song begin,
The whole world keep high triumph
And all that is therein;
Let all things in creation
Their notes of gladness blend,
For Christ the Lord has risen,
Our joy that has no end.
Tune: Ellacombe or Aurelia 76.76 D
Music: (Ellacombe) Wurtemburg Gesangbuch, 1784, adapted in the Mainz Gesangbuch, 1833, and further adapted in the St. Gall Gesangbuch, 1863; (Aurelia) S. S. Wesley, 1810-1876

PSALMODY
Ant. 1 Our God will be made manifest; he will not come in silence, alleluia.
Psalm 50
Genuine love of God
I have come not to abolish the law but to bring it to perfection (see Matthew 5:17).
I
The God of gods, the Lord,
*has spoken and summoned the earth,
from the rising of the sun to its setting.
*Out of Zions perfect beauty he shines.
Our God comes, he keeps silence no longer.
Before him fire devours,
*around him tempest rages.
He calls on the heavens and the earth
*to witness his judgment of his people.
Summon before me my people
*who made covenant with me by sacrifice.
The heavens proclaim his justice,
*for God himself is the judge.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
*and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
*and will be for ever. Amen.
Ant. Our God will be made manifest; he will not come in silence, alleluia.
Ant. 2 Offer to God the sacrifice of praise, alleluia.
II
Listen, my people, I will speak;
*Israel, I will testify against you,
for I am God your God.
*I accuse you, lay the charge before you.
I find no fault with your sacrifices,
*your offerings are always before me.
I do not ask more bullocks from your farms,
*nor goats from among your herds.
For I own all the beasts of the forest,
*beasts in their thousands on my hills.
I know all the birds in the sky,
*all that moves in the field belongs to me.
Were I hungry, I would not tell you,
*for I own the world and all it holds.
Do you think I eat the flesh of bulls,
*or drink the blood of goats?
Pay your sacrifice of thanksgiving to God
*and render him your votive offerings.
Call on me in the day of distress.
*I will free you and you shall honor me.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
*and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
*and will be for ever. Amen.
Ant. Offer to God the sacrifice of praise, alleluia.
Ant. 3 I want a loving heart more than sacrifice, knowledge of my ways more than holocausts, alleluia.
III
But God says to the wicked:
But how can you recite my commandments
*and take my covenant on your lips,
you who despise my law
*and throw my words to the winds,
you who see a thief and go with him;
*who throw in your lot with adulterers,
who unbridle your mouth for evil
*and whose tongue is plotting crime,
you who sit and malign your brother
*and slander your own mothers son.
You do this, and should I keep silence?
*Do you think that I am like you?
Mark this, you who never think of God,
*lest I seize you and you cannot escape;
a sacrifice of thanksgiving honors me
*and I will show Gods salvation to the upright.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
*and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
*and will be for ever. Amen.
Psalm Prayer
Father, accept us as a sacrifice of praise, so that we may go through life unburdened by sin, walking in the way of salvation, and always giving thanks to you.
Ant. I want a loving heart more than sacrifice, knowledge of my ways more than holocausts, alleluia.
My heart and my flesh, alleluia.
Rejoice in the living God, alleluia.
READINGS
FIRST READING
From the first letter of the apostle John4:1-10
God has loved us first
Beloved,
do not trust every spirit,
but put the spirits to a test
to see if they belong to God,
because many false prophets have appeared in the world.
This is how you can recognize Gods Spirit:
every spirit that acknowledges Jesus Christ come in the flesh
belongs to God,
while every spirit that fails to acknowledge him
does not belong to God.
Such is the spirit of the antichrist
which, as you have heard, is to come;
in fact, it is in the world already.
You are of God, you little ones,
and thus you have conquered the false prophets.
For there is One greater in you
than there is in the world.
Those others belong to the world;
that is why theirs is the language of the world
and why the world listens to them.
We belong to God
and anyone who has knowledge of God gives us a hearing,
while anyone who is not of God refuses to hear us.
Thus do we distinguish the spirit of truth
from the spirit of deception.
Beloved,
let us love one another
because love is of God;
everyone who loves is begotten of God
and has knowledge of God.
The man without love has known nothing of God,
for God is love.
Gods love was revealed in our midst in this way:
he sent his only Son to the world
that we might have life through him.
Love, then, consists in this:
not that we have loved God
but that he has loved us
and has sent his Son as an offering for our sins.
RESPONSORY 1 John 4:9; John 3:16
God showed his love for us
by sending his only Son into the world
so that all who believe in him may have eternal life, alleluia.
God so loved the world that he gave us his only Son.
So that all who believe in him may have eternal life, alleluia.
SECOND READING
From a catechetical instruction by Saint Cyril of Jerusalem, bishop(Cat. 16, De Spiritu Sancto 1, 11-12.16: PG 33, 931-935. 939-942)
The living water of the Holy Spirit
The water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of living water, welling up into eternal life. This is a new kind of water, a living, leaping water, welling up for those who are worthy. But why did Christ call the grace of the Spirit water? Because all things are dependent on water; plants and animals have their origin in water. Water comes down from heaven as rain, and although it is always the same in itself, it produces many different effects, one in the palm tree, another in the vine, and so on throughout the whole of creation. It does not come down, now as one thing, now as another, but while remaining essentially the same, it adapts itself to the needs of every creature that receives it.
In the same way the Holy Spirit, whose nature is always the same, simple and indivisible, apportions grace to each man as he wills. Like a dry tree which puts forth shoots when watered, the soul bears the fruit of holiness when repentance has made it worthy of receiving the Holy Spirit. Although the Spirit never changes, the effects of this action, by the will of God and in the name of Christ, are both many and marvelous.
The Spirit makes one man a teacher of divine truth, inspires another to prophesy, gives another the power of casting out devils, enables another to interpret holy Scripture. The Spirit strengthens one mans self-control, shows another how to help the poor, teaches another to fast and lead a life of asceticism, makes another oblivious to the needs of the body, trains another for martyrdom. His action is different in different people, but the Spirit himself is always the same. In each person, Scripture says, the Spirit reveals his presence in a particular way for the common good.
The Spirit comes gently and makes himself known by his fragrance. He is not felt as a burden, for he is light, very light. Rays of light and knowledge stream before him as he approaches. The Spirit comes with the tenderness of a true friend and protector to save, to heal, to teach, to counsel, to strengthen, to console. The Spirit comes to enlighten the mind first of the one who receives him, and then, through him, the minds of others as well.
As light strikes the eyes of a man who comes out of darkness into the sunshine and enables him to see clearly things he could not discern before, so light floods the soul of the man counted worthy of receiving the Holy Spirit and enables him to see things beyond the range of human vision, things hitherto undreamed of.

You are the body of Christ
and all of you are members of it.

for the good of all, alleluia.

INVITATORY
The Invitatory is said when this is the first hour of the day.
Lord,
+ open my lips.
And my mouth will proclaim your praise.

Psalm 95A call to praise God
Encourage each other daily while it is still today (Hebrews 3:13).

Ant. Come, let us adore Christ the Lord who promised to send the Holy Spirit on his people, alleluia.
Come, then, let us bow down and worship,
* bending the knee before the Lord, our maker.
For he is our God and we are his people,

PSALMODY
Ant. 1 My heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God, alleluia.
Psalm 84
Longing for Gods Temple
Here we do not have a lasting city; we seek a home that is yet to come (Hebrews 13:14).
How lovely is your dwelling place,
*Lord, God of hosts.
My soul is longing and yearning,
*is yearning for the courts of the Lord.
My heart and my soul ring out their joy
*to God, the living God.
The sparrow herself finds a home
*and the swallow a nest for her brood;
she lays her young by your altars,
*Lord of hosts, my king and my God.
They are happy, who dwell in your house,
*for ever singing your praise.
They are happy, whose strength is in you,
*in whose hearts are the roads to Zion.
As they go through the Bitter Valley
they make it a place of springs,
*the autumn rain covers it with blessings.
They walk with ever growing strength,
*they will see the God of gods in Zion.
O Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer,
*give ear, O God of Jacob.
Turn your eyes, O God, our shield,
*look on the face of your anointed.
One day within your courts
*is better than a thousand elsewhere.
The threshold of the house of God
*I prefer to the dwellings of the wicked.
For the Lord God is a rampart, a shield;
*he will give us his favor and glory.
The Lord will not refuse any good
*to those who walk without blame.
Lord, God of hosts,
*happy the man who trusts in you!
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
*and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
*and will be for ever. Amen.
Psalm Prayer
Bless your people, Lord. You have given us the law that we may walk from strength to strength and raise our minds to you from this valley of tears. May we receive the gifts you have gained for us.
Ant. My heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God, alleluia.
Ant. 2 The house of the Lord has been raised on high, and all nations will go up to it, alleluia.
Canticle: Isaiah 2:2-5
The mountain of the Lords dwelling towers above every mountain
All peoples shall come and worship in your presence (Revelation 15:4).
In days to come,
*the mountain of the Lords house
shall be established as the highest mountain
*and raised above the hills.
All nations shall stream toward it;
*many peoples shall come and say:
Come, let us climb the Lords mountain,
*to the house of the God of Jacob,
that he may instruct us in his ways,
*and we may walk in his paths.
For from Zion shall go forth instruction,
*and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
He shall judge between the nations,
*and impose terms on many peoples.
They shall beat their swords into plowshares
*and their spears into pruning hooks;
one nation shall not raise the sword against another,
*nor shall they train for war again.
O house of Jacob, come,
*let us walk in the light of the Lord!
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
*and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
*and will be for ever. Amen.
Ant. The house of the Lord has been raised on high, and all nations will go up to it, alleluia.
Ant. 3 Proclaim this among the nations: the Lord is king, alleluia.
Psalm 96
The Lord, king and judge of the world
A new theme now inspires their praise of God; they belong to the Lamb (see Revelation 14:3).
O sing a new song to the Lord,
sing to the Lord, all the earth.
*O sing to the Lord, bless his name.
Proclaim his help day by day,
tell among the nations his glory
*and his wonders among all the peoples.
The Lord is great and worthy of praise,
to be feared above all gods;
*the gods of the heathens are naught.
It was the Lord who made the heavens,
his are majesty and state and power
*and splendor in his holy place.
Give the Lord, you families of peoples,
give the Lord glory and power,
*give the Lord the glory of his name.
Bring an offering and enter his courts,
worship the Lord in his temple.
*O earth, tremble before him.
Proclaim to the nations: God is king.
The world he made firm in its place;
*he will judge the peoples in fairness.
Let the heavens rejoice and earth be glad,
*let the sea and all within it thunder praise,
let the land and all it bears rejoice,
*all the trees of the wood shout for joy
at the presence of the Lord for he comes,
*he comes to rule the earth.
With justice he will rule the world,
*he will judge the peoples with his truth.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
*and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
*and will be for ever. Amen.
Psalm Prayer
Lord, you have renewed the face of the earth. Your Church throughout the world sings you a new song, announcing your wonders to all. Through a virgin, you have brought forth a new birth in our world; through your miracles, a new power; through your suffering, a new patience; in your resurrection, a new hope, and in your ascension, new majesty.
Ant. Proclaim this among the nations: the Lord is king, alleluia.
READING
Romans 10:8b-10
The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart (that is, the word of faith which we preach). For if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Faith in the heart leads to justification, confession on the lips to salvation.
RESPONSORY
The Lord is risen from the tomb, alleluia, alleluia.
The Lord is risen from the tomb, alleluia, alleluia.
He hung upon the cross for us,
alleluia, alleluia.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
The Lord is risen from the tomb, alleluia, alleluia.
CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH
Ant. The world will persecute you, but have courage, I have overcome the world, alleluia.
Luke 1:68-79The Messiah and his forerunner
Blessed
+ be the Lord, the God of Israel;
*he has come to his people and set them free.
He has raised up for us a mighty savior, *
born of the house of his servant David.
Through his holy prophets he promised of old
that he would save us from our enemies, *
from the hands of all who hate us.
He promised to show mercy to our fathers *
and to remember his holy covenant.
This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham: *
to set us free from the hands of our enemies,
free to worship him without fear, *
holy and righteous in his sight
all the days of our life.
You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High; *
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
to give his people knowledge of salvation *
by the forgiveness of their sins.
In the tender compassion of our God *
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, *
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, *
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, *
and will be for ever. Amen.
Ant. The world will persecute you, but have courage, I have overcome the world, alleluia.

Christ promised to send the Holy Spirit from the Father in his name, to be our helper and guide. Let us bless him and ask him:
Lord Jesus, give us your Spirit.
Lord Jesus, we thank you, and through you the Father also, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
may everything we say and do today be in your name.
Lord Jesus, give us your Spirit.
Give us the Holy Spirit to dwell within us,

Lord Jesus, give us your Spirit.
Grant that we may never condemn or despise others,
for we shall all one day face you as our judge.

Daytime Prayer
INTRODUCTION
God,
+ come to my assistance.
Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.
HYMN
Alleluia! sing to Jesus!
His the scepter, his the throne;
Alleluia! his the triumph,
His the victory alone:
Hark! the songs of peaceful Sion
Thunder like a mighty flood;
Jesus, out of evry nation,
Has redeemed us by his Blood.
Alleluia! not as orphans
Are we left in sorrow now;
Alleluia! He is near us,
Faith believes nor questions how:
Though the cloud from sight received him,
When the forty days were oer
Shall our hearts forget his promise,
I am with you evermore?
Alleluia! Bread of angels,
Thou on earth our food, our stay;
Alleluia! here the sinful
Flee to thee from day to day:
Intercessor, friend of sinners,
Earths Redeemer, plead for me,
Where the songs of all the sinless
Sweep across the crystal sea.
Alleluia! King eternal,
Thee, the Lord of lords we own;
Alleluia! born of Mary,
Earth thy footstool, heavn thy throne:
Thou within the veil has entered,
Robed in flesh, our great High Priest;
Thou on earth both Priest and Victim
In the Eucharistic feast.
Melody: Hyfrydol 87.87.DMusic: R. H. Prichard, 1811-1887Text: William Chatterton Dix, 1837-1898
PSALMODY
Ant. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Psalm 119:89-96
XII (Lamed)
A meditation on Gods law
I give you a new commandment: love one another as I have loved you (John 13:34).
Your word, O Lord, for ever *
stands firm in the heavens:
your truth lasts from age to age, *
like the earth you created.
By your decree it endures to this day; *
for all things serve you.
Had your law not been my delight *
I would have died in my affliction.
I will never forget your precepts *
for with them you give me life.
Save me, for I am yours *
since I seek your precepts.
Though the wicked lie in wait to destroy me *
yet I ponder on your will.
I have seen that all perfection has an end *
but your command is boundless.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, *
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, *
and will be for ever. Amen.
Psalm Prayer
Lord, your Word, which stands firm for ever in heaven, dwells in your Church; may his presence bring lasting light to your temple.
Psalm 71
You have stood by me, Lord, from my youth
Let hope be your joy; be patient in trials (Romans 12:12).
I
In you, O Lord, I take refuge; *
let me never be put to shame.
In your justice rescue me, free me: *
pay heed to me and save me.
Be a rock where I can take refuge,
a mighty stronghold to save me; *
for you are my rock, my stronghold.
Free me from the hand of the wicked, *
from the grip of the unjust, of the oppressor.
It is you, O Lord, who are my hope, *
my trust, O Lord, since my youth.
On you I have leaned from my birth,
from my mothers womb you have been my help. *
My hope has always been in you.
My fate has filled many with awe *
but you are my strong refuge.
My lips are filled with your praise, *
with your glory all the day long.
Do not reject me now that I am old; *
when my strength fails do not forsake me.
For my enemies are speaking about me; *
those who watch me take counsel together.
They say: God has forsaken him; follow him, *
seize him; there is no one to save him.
O God, do not stay far off: *
my God, make haste to help me!
Let them be put to shame and destroyed, *
all those who seek my life.
Let them be covered with shame and confusion, *
all those who seek to harm me.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, *
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, *
and will be for ever. Amen.
II
But as for me, I will always hope *
and praise you more and more.
My lips will tell of your justice
and day by day of your help *
though I can never tell it all.
I will declare the Lords mighty deeds, *
proclaiming your justice, yours alone.
O God, you have taught me from my youth *
and I proclaim your wonders still.
Now that I am old and grey-headed, *
do not forsake me, God.
Let me tell of your power to all ages, *
praise your strength and justice to the skies,
tell of you who have worked such wonders. *
O God, who is like you?
You have burdened me with bitter troubles *
but you will give me back my life.
You will raise me from the depths of the earth; *
you will exalt me and console me again.
So I will give you thanks on the lyre *
for your faithful love, my God.
To you will I sing with the harp, *
to you, the Holy One of Israel.
When I sing to you my lips shall rejoice *
and my soul, which you have redeemed.
And all the day long my tongue *
shall tell the tale of your justice:
for they are put to shame and disgraced, *
all those who seek to harm me.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, *
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, *
and will be for ever. Amen.
Psalm Prayer
Lord, God of the living, you give us lasting youth through the waters of rebirth, and happiness through the bread of life. Do not desert us when we are old, but help us to follow your will in both good times and bad, so that we may for ever praise your faithfulness.
Ant. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
At the other hours, the complementary psalmody is taken from Series I and III.

HYMN
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
The strife is oer, the battle done;
Now is the victors triumph won:
O let the song of praise be sung.
Alleluia!
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
On the third morn he rose again,
Glorious in majesty to reign:
O let us swell the joyful strain:

O risen Lord, all praise to thee,
Who from our sins has set us free,
That we may live eternally:

Tune: Victory 888 with alleluiasMusic: G.P. da Palestrina, 1588 adapted with alleluias by W.H. Monk, 1861Text: Cologne, 1695Translation: Francis Pott, 1861, alt.
Or:
Christ Jesus lay in deaths strong bands
For our offenses given:
But now at Gods right hand he stands
And brings us life from heaven;
Therefore let us joyful be,
And praise the Father thankfully
With songs of Alleluia.
Alleluia.
How long and bitter was the strife
When life and death contended,
The victory remained with life,
The reign of death was ended:
Stripped of power, no more it reigns,
And empty form alone remains.
Deaths sting is lost for ever.
Alleluia.
So let us keep this festival
To which Our Lord invites us,
The Savior who is joy of all,
The Sun that warms and lights us:
By his grace he shall impart
Eternal sunshine to the heart;
The night of sin has ended.
Alleluia.

PSALMODY
Ant. 1 The Lord will be your light for ever; your God will be your glory, alleluia.
Psalm 123
The Lord, unfailing hope of his people
Two blind men cried out: Have pity on us, Lord, Son of David (Matthew 20:30).
To you have I lifted up my eyes, *
you who dwell in the heavens:
my eyes, like the eyes of slaves *
on the hand of their lords.
Like the eyes of a servant *
on the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes are on the Lord our God *
till he show us his mercy.
Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy. *
We are filled with contempt.
Indeed all too full is our soul
with the scorn of the rich, *
with the proud mans disdain.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, *
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, *
and will be for ever. Amen.
Psalm Prayer
Father in heaven, we lift our eyes to you and pray: confound the scorn of the proud and graciously show us your mercy.
Ant. The Lord will be your light for ever; your God will be your glory, alleluia.
Ant. 2 The snare was broken and we were set free, alleluia.
Psalm 124
Our help is in the name of the Lord
The Lord said to Paul: Fear not . . . I am with you (Acts 18:9-10).
If the Lord had not been on our side, *
this is Israels song.
If the Lord had not been on our side *
when men rose against us,
then would they have swallowed us alive *
when their anger was kindled.
Then would the waters have engulfed us, *
the torrent gone over us;
over our head would have swept *
the raging waters.
Blessed be the Lord who did not give us *
a prey to their teeth!
Our life, like a bird, has escaped *
from the snare of the fowler.
Indeed the snare has been broken *
and we have escaped.
Our help is in the name of the Lord, *
who made heaven and earth.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, *
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, *
and will be for ever. Amen.
Psalm Prayer
Lord Jesus, you foretold that your disciples would be despised on account of your name, but that not a hair of their heads is ever forgotten. In times of persecution, defend and revive us by the power and comfort of the Holy Spirit, so that we can be freed from our enemies and praise your saving help.
Ant. The snare was broken and we were set free, alleluia.
Ant. 3 When I am lifted up from the earth, I shall draw all people to myself, alleluia.
Canticle: Ephesians 1:3-10
God our Savior
Praised be the God and Father *
of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who has bestowed on us in Christ *
every spiritual blessing in the heavens.
God chose us in him *
before the world began
to be holy *
and blameless in his sight.
He predestined us *
to be his adopted sons through Jesus Christ,
such was his will and pleasure,
that all might praise the glorious favor *
he has bestowed on us in his beloved.
In him and through his blood, we have been redeemed, *
and our sins forgiven,
so immeasurably generous *
is Gods favor to us.
God has given us the wisdom *
to understand fully the mystery,
the plan he was pleased *
to decree in Christ.
A plan to be carried out *
in Christ, in the fullness of time,
to bring all things into one in him, *
in the heavens and on earth.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, *
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, *
and will be for ever. Amen.
Ant. When I am lifted up from the earth, I shall draw all people to myself, alleluia.
READING
Romans 8:14-17
All who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. You did not receive a spirit of slavery leading you back into fear, but a spirit of adoption through whom we cry out, Abba! (that is, Father). The Spirit himself gives witness with our spirit that we are children of God. But if we are children, we are heirs as well: heirs of God, heirs with Christ, if only we suffer with him so as to be glorified with him.
RESPONSORY

Luke 1:46-55The soul rejoices in the Lord
My

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior
*for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,

He has mercy on those who fear him

He has shown the strength of his arm,

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

INTERCESSIONS
Let us give thanks to Christ, who filled the apostles and the whole Church with the consolation of the Holy Spirit. In union with all the faithful, let us cry out:
Lord, send your consoling Spirit into your Church.
Lord Jesus, mediator between God and men, you chose priests to share your work,
through them may all rise with you to the Father.
Lord, send your consoling Spirit into your Church.
Grant that rich and poor may meet in friendship, for you are the God of both,
do not let the rich make riches their god.
Lord, send your consoling Spirit into your Church.
Make your Gospel known to all peoples,
that all may come to obey you in faith.
Lord, send your consoling Spirit into your Church.
Send forth your Spirit, gentlest of consolers,
to wipe away the tears of all who mourn.
Lord, send your consoling Spirit into your Church.
Purify the souls of the departed,
and receive them into the company of your saints and chosen ones in heaven.
Lord, send your consoling Spirit into your Church.

INTRODUCTION
God,
+ come to my assistance.
Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.
Examination of Conscience
A brief examination of conscience may be made. In the communal celebration of the Office, a Penitential Rite using the formulas of the Mass may be inserted here.
[I confess to almighty God
and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have greatly sinned,
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,
And, striking their breast, they say:
through my fault, through my fault,
through my most grievous fault;
Then they continue:
therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin,
all the Angels and Saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord our God.
The absolution by the Priest follows:
May almighty God have mercy on us,
forgive us our sins,
and bring us to everlasting life.
Amen.

HYMN
At the Lambs high feast we sing
Praise to our victorious King,
Who has washed us in the tide
Flowing from his wounded side;
Praise the Lord, whose love divine
Gives his sacred blood for wine,
Gives his body for the feast,
Christ the victim, Christ the priest.
Where the Paschal blood is poured,
Deaths dark angel sheathes his sword;
Israels host in triumph go
Through the waves that drown the foe.
Christ the Lamb whose blood was shed,
Paschal victim, Paschal bread;
Let us with a fervent love
Taste the manna from above.
Mighty Victim from on high,
Powrs of hell now vanquished lie;
Sin is conquered in the fight:
You have brought us life and light;
Your resplendent banners wave,
You have risen from the grave;
Christ has opened Paradise,
And in him all men shall rise.
Easter triumph, Easter joy,
Sin alone can this destroy;
Souls form sin and death set free
Glory in their liberty.
Hymns of glory, hymns of praise
Father unto you we raise;
Risen Lord, for joy we sing;
Let our hymns through heaven ring.
Tune: Salzburg 77.77 D
Music: Jacob Hintze, 1622-1702
Text: Ad regias Agni dapes
Translation: Robert Campbell, 1814-1868, adapted by Geoffrey Laycock
Or:
God who made the earth and heaven,
Darkness and light;
You the day for work have givn
For rest the night.
May your angel guards defend us,
Slumber sweet your mercy send us,
Holy dreams and hope attend us,
All through the night.
And when morn again shall call us
To run lifes way,
May we still whateer befall us,
Your will obey.
From the powr of evil hide us,
In the narrow pathway guide us,
Never be your smile denied us
All through the day.
Guard us waking, guard us sleeping,
And, when we die,
May we in your mighty keeping
All peaceful lie.
When the last dread call shall wake us,
Then O Lord, do not forsake us,
But to reign in glory take us
With you on high.

PSALMODY

Psalm 86
Poor mans prayer in trouble
Blessed be God who comforts us in all our trials (2 Corinthians 1:3, 4).
Turn your ear, O Lord, and give answer *
for I am poor and needy.
Preserve my life, for I am faithful: *
save the servant who trusts in you.
You are my God; have mercy on me, Lord, *
for I cry to you all day long.
Give joy to your servant, O Lord, *
for to you I lift up my soul.
O Lord, you are good and forgiving, *
full of love to all who call.
Give heed, O Lord, to my prayer *
and attend to the sound of my voice.
In the day of distress I will call *
and surely you will reply.
Among the gods there is none like you, O Lord; *
nor work to compare with yours.
All the nations shall come to adore you *
and glorify your name, O Lord:
for you are great and do marvelous deeds, *
you who alone are God.
Show me, Lord, your way
so that I may walk in your truth. *
Guide my heart to fear your name.
I will praise you, Lord my God, with all my heart *
and glorify your name for ever;
for your love to me has been great: *
you have saved me from the depths of the grave.
The proud have risen against me;
ruthless men seek my life: *
to you they pay no heed.
But you, God of mercy and compassion, *
slow to anger, O Lord,
abounding in love and truth, *
turn and take pity on me.
O give your strength to your servant *
and save your handmaids son.
Show me the sign of your favor
that my foes may see to their shame *
that you console me and give me your help.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, *
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, *
and will be for ever. Amen.
Ant. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Or:
Loving mother of the Redeemer,

To the wonderment of nature you bore your Creator,
yet remained a virgin after as before.
You who received Gabriels joyful greeting,
have pity on us poor sinners.

Saint Christopher Magallanes was joined in martyrdom by twenty-one diocesan priests and three devout laymen, all members of the Cristeros Movement, who rose up in rebellion against the anti-Catholic Mexican government during the 1920's. having erected a seminary at Totatiche, he secretly spread the Gospel and ministered to the people. When imprisoned by the government authorities, he was heard to shout from his cell; "I am innocent and I die innocent. I forgive with all my heart those responsible for my death, and I ask God that the shedding of my blood serve the peace of our divided Mexico".

First Reading: Revelation 7:9-17
After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no man could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, "Salvation belongs to our God who sits upon the throne, and to the Lamb!" And all the angels stood round the throne and round the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying, "Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God for ever and ever! Amen."
Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these, clothed in white robes, and whence have they come?" I said to him, "Sir, you know." And he said to me, "These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve Him day and night within His temple; and He who sits upon the throne will shelter them with His presence. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and He will guide them to springs of living water; and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."
Gospel: John 12:24-26
Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If any one serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, there shall My servant be also; if any one serves Me, the Father will honor him.

I just wanted tpo make sure you got this bio of the saint of the day,
Saint Christopher Magallanes. He preached against armed warfare, but was martyred during the Cristero War for, basically, being a Catholic priest.
.
From Wikipedia:
Saint Cristóbal Magallanes Jara, also known as Christopher Magallanes, is a martyr and saint venerated in the Catholic Church who was killed without trial on the way to say Mass during the Cristero War after the trumped up charge of inciting rebellion. He was born in Totatiche, Jalisco, Mexico on July 30, 1869. He was son of Rafael Magallanes and Clara Jara, who were farmers. He worked as a shepherd in his youth and enrolled in the Conciliar Seminary of San José in Guadalajara at the age of 19.
He was ordained at the age of 30 at the Santa Teresa Temple in Guadalajara and subsequently served as chaplain of the School of Arts and Works of the Holy Spirit in Guadalajara. He was then designated as the parish priest for his home town of Totatiche, where he helped found schools, carpentry shops and the planning of hydrological works including the dam of La Candelaria.
He took special interest in the evangelization of the local indigenous Huichol people and was instrumental in the foundation of the mission in the indigenous town of Azqueltán. When government decrees shut down the seminary in Guadalajara in 1914, Fr Magallanes offered to open a seminary in his parish. In July 1915, he opened the Auxiliar Seminary of Totatiche, which quickly achieved a student body of 17 students by the following year and was recognized by the Archbishop of Guadalajara, José Francisco Orozco y Jiménez, who appointed a precept and two professors to the seminary.
Magallanes wrote and preached against armed rebellion, but was falsely accused of promoting the Cristero Rebellion in the area. Arrested on May 21, 1927, while en route to celebrate Mass at a farm, he gave away his few remaining possessions to his executioners, gave them absolution, and without a trial, he was martyred four days later with Saint Agustín Caloca in Colotlán, Jalisco. His last words to his executioners were "I die innocent, and ask God that my blood may serve to unite my Mexican brethren."
He was succeeded as parish priest of Totatiche by Fr José Pilar Quezada Valdés, who went on to become the first bishop of the Archdiocese of Acapulco.
Fr Magallanes was canonized by Pope John Paul II on May 21, 2000.

Blessed Eugene De Mazenod
Feast Day: May 21
Born: 1782 :: Died: 1861
Eugene was born in France in 1782. He became a priest in 1811. Father Eugene was sensitive to the needs of the poor and he ministered to them. He was always eager to find new ways to reach out to the young. He wanted to bring them to the love and practice of their faith. He believed in the value of parish missions. He realized that missionary priests in a parish could do so much good to reawaken in people dedication to their faith.
Father de Mazenod began a new religious order of priests and lay brothers in 1826. They were missionaries called the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. Their particular ministry was to go to people who had never heard of Jesus and his Church. Father de Mazenod and his order were courageous in answering the requests of bishops who needed their help. Bishops of North America eagerly awaited the Oblates. Bishop Ignace Bourget of Montreal was especially eager. He must have been very convincing because the founder sent several of his members. Within ten years, the Oblates had grown rapidly. They reached all of Canada and had begun to minister in the United States, too.
In 1837, Father de Mazenod was consecrated bishop of Marseilles, France. He became known for his loyalty and love for the pope. He was also a gifted organizer and educator. Bishop de Mazen-od remained superior of his order until he died in 1861.
The great work Bishop de Mazenod started continues today through the Oblate missionaries around the world. They staff mission posts, parishes and universities.

From another site about the Oblates:
Efforts to have Bishop de Mazenod canonized began in 1926 and were rewarded with his beatification in 1975. The process continued, and on December 3, 1995, Pope John Paul II proclaimed him a saint of the Church

In 1815, St. Eugene de Mazenod founded the Congregation of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate to evangelize the poorest populations of Provence that were being neglected. He then sent his missionaries to proclaim the Gospel in America, South Africa and Asia. Later on, he was appointed Vicar General of Marseilles and, in 1836, Bishop of this same diocese. Until his death on May 21, 1861, he was at the service of his people with an extraordinary pastoral charity, nourished by an intense interior life. In his city, rapidly developing at the time, he created numerous parishes, built new churches and installed new Religious Institutes. Cardinal Bernard Gantin
Saint Christopher Magallanes was joined in martyrdom by twenty-one diocesan priests and three devout laymen, all members of the Cristeros movement, who rose up in rebellion against the anti-Catholic Mexican government during the 1920s. St. Eugene de Mazenod
St. Eugene De Mazenod, refused to follow the established modes expected of someone born into nobility. From an early age, Eugene was troubled by the living conditions of the poor and their degraded status in society. When he became a priest, Eugene was not satisfied to accept the traditional role of a pastor serving a large, affluent parish. Instead, he sought out the poor laborers and preached the message of Gods love a message they had not heard before.
Born in France in 1782, Eugene lived amid turmoil in his country and in his family. Although he grew up with the privileges and luxuries of wealth, his family life was far from ideal. His parents came from very different backgrounds and they eventually divorced, a rarity for Catholics in the 18th century.
As the French Revolution grew, Eugenes family was forced into exile, and at different times, he was separated from his mother or father for years at a time.
After years of struggling to find his place in life, Eugene experienced a conversion at the age of 25 and entered the seminary. He was ordained a priest in 1811. In 1816, Eugene invited others to join in his ministry to the poor and founded the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. Since that time, thousands of Oblate priests and brothers have dedicated their lives to serving those most in need. He died on May 21, 1861.
On December 3, 1995, Pope John Paul II canonized Eugene De Mazenod a saint and recognized his example of untiring dedication to the poor.

Things to Do:
St. Christopher Magallanes and Companions
Like Blessed Miguel Agustin Pro, S.J. (November 23), Cristobal and his twenty-four companion martyrs lived under a very anti-Catholic government in Mexico, one determined to weaken the Catholic faith of its people. Churches, schools and seminaries were closed; foreign clergy were expelled. Cristobal established a clandestine seminary at Totatiche, Jalisco. Magallanes and the other priests were forced to minister secretly to Catholics during the presidency of Plutarco Calles (1924-1928).
All of these martyrs except three were diocesan priests. David, Manuel and Salvador were laymen who died with their parish priest, Luis Batis. All of these martyrs belonged to the Cristero movement, pledging their allegiance to Christ and to the church that he established to spread the Good News in societyeven if Mexico's leaders had made it a crime to receive baptism or celebrate the Mass.
These martyrs did not die as a single group but in eight Mexican states, with Jalisco and Zacatecas having the largest number. They were beatified in 1992 and canonized eight years later.

The Word Among Us
Meditation: Acts 19:1-8
We have never even heard that there is a Holy Spirit. (Acts 19:2)
These Ephesians were almost completely in the dark! But while they were innocently unaware of the Holy Spirit, he was, of course, well aware of them. You could even say that the Spirit sent Paul as a spokesman to introduce himself. And the new friends quickly made up for lost time.
Think about your best friend. Do you remember when you met? Would you say that youre better friends now than you were at first? Of course! Friendships grow over time. At first, we know them, then we know them, and then we really know them. The knowledge grows deeper every year. Eventually we know what things they like, what makes them laugh, what they might say in a certain situation, even what they might think and not say! It takes a certain mutual effort and patience for a relationship to develop so deeply, but it is well worth the effort.
Our relationship with the Lord is no different. If we want it to grow, it also takes time and patience. It takes making sure that we have time alone with him every day in prayer and in his Word. It takes examining our hearts to see what areas arent quite submitted to him. It takes small steps of faith in the direction hes leading us. And as for patience, well, we have to learn to wait on the Lord for guidance. Then sometimes we even have to be patient with ourselves when we dont get it right!
All this effort and patience we contribute may seem small, though, when compared to the effort and patience God puts into this relationship. Think about all the ways he has gone the extra mile for you. He gave you his only Son Jesus. He has given you his Spirit. He sends you messages of love and grace every day in a thousand different ways. He is incredibly mercifuleven longsufferingbecause he treasures your friendship so deeply.
Friendship with the Lord never goes stale. No matter how well you know him, theres always more. His love is deeper, his majesties are higher, and his faithfulness is greater than you will ever know. And that means theres always more ways your friendship with him can surprise and inspire you!
Lord, thank you for calling me your friend. All I want is to know you more.

Vultus Christi
Drawing upon the traditional mysteries of the rosary -- Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious, and the new mysteries of Light proposed by Pope John Paul II -- it becomes possible to pray through seven mysteries that, in a special way, reveal the presence and work of the Holy Spirit. I find it practical to use my Seven Dolours Rosary, with its "seven times seven" series of beads for this persevering invocation of the Holy Spirit through Mary.
1. The Annunciation, the Proto-Pentecost in which the Virgin is overshadowed by the Holy Spirit (cf. Lk 1:35). Ask for the Gift of Wisdom.
2. The Visitation in which Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit (Lk 1:42), greets the Mother of her Lord. Ask for the Gift of Understanding.
3. The Baptism of Jesus, at which the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form, as a dove (Lk 3:22). Ask for the Gift of Counsel.
4. The Wedding Feast at Cana (Jn 2:1-11) at which, in response to the intervention of his Mother, Jesus provides wine in abundance prefiguring the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Ask for the Gift of Fortitude.
5. The Death of Jesus Crucified who, bowing his head, handed over his spirit (Jn 19:30). Ask for the Gift of Knowledge.
6. The Resurrection of Jesus who, appearing to the disciples on the evening of that day, the first day of the week (Jn 20:19), breathed on them, and said to them, 'Receive the Holy Spirit (Jn 20:22). Ask for the Gift of Piety.
7. The Descent of the Holy Spirit when the day of Pentecost had come (Ac 2:1). Ask for the Gift of Holy Fear.

Father Paul Campbell, LC John 16:29-33
The disciples said to Jesus: "Now you are talking plainly, and not in any figure of speech. Now we realize that you know everything and that you do not need to have anyone question you. Because of this we believe that you came from God." Jesus answered them, "Do you believe now? Behold, the hour is coming and has arrived when each of you will be scattered to his own home and you will leave me alone. But I am not alone, because the Father is with me. I have told you this so that you might have peace in me. In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world." Introductory Prayer: Lord, I believe in you and all that you have revealed for our salvation. I hope in you because of your overflowing mercy. Every single act of yours on this earth demonstrated your love for us. Your ascent into heaven before the eyes of the Apostles inspires my hope of one day joining you there. I love you and wish you to be the center of my life.
Petition: Lord, give me an unwavering confidence in your victory over sin and evil in my life and in the world. 1. Jesus Knows Our Weaknesses: Jesus warns his disciples that they will all flee from him in the Garden of Gethsemane when the guards come to arrest him. He is preparing them not for their fall, but for their recovery. He never expected them to be perfect, without flaws, mistakes or shortcomings. He doesnt expect it of us either. There have been times when we have all abandoned him to follow the selfishness of sin. We sought our own pleasure, as he sought the nails of the cross and the scourging of the lash. Where am I struggling right now? Am I wavering over a compromise with sin in my life? Ask him for the strength and light to live as his faithful friend. 2. Trust in the Fathers Presence: Even as the disciples left him, Jesus was not alone. His Father was with him. This essential union of love in his life with his Father was the strength that carried him forward to embrace the cross. He could be calm in the midst of the storm and endure unimaginable sufferings during his passion and death. Jesus lights the way for us in the midst of our own struggles and trials in life. It is natural for us to feel isolated from everyone when we are suffering and struggling, alone in the pain and the emptiness of our life. But God is with us; he is within us. We are never alone. 3. His Victory is My Victory: Jesus never promised his disciples an easy life. He was very clear with them that in the world they would have trouble. It is the same for us. If the world has rejected Christ, it will reject us. We cant be surprised when opposition and difficulties come our way. It is part and parcel of following Christ and shows that we are heading in the right direction. It is hard to keep fighting, fighting the enemies within and without, but Jesus is with us. We need faith to see that he has won the victory. He has overcome sin and death and he is there at the right hand of the Father. Conversation with Christ: Jesus, it is hard to keep fighting. Sometimes it seems I make little progress. I have the same struggles and difficulties every day. Im overwhelmed by the evil I see in the world, and it can be hard to see your victory in many places, in many families and homes. Give me the hope that I need to keep seeking your will in all things. Resolution: I will pray for those who are struggling in their faith.

Be Brave
Water is a very familiar cleansing agent used very commonly in washing
rituals in most oriental religions. It was also used during the time
of John the Baptist, referred to by St. Paul as the baptism of
repentance. However, in our sacred Christian tradition water
symbolizes the new life in Christ through sacramental baptism.
While symbols may portray a higher reality, we would still need a
transforming experience of the Holy Spirit. It would be this
experience that would help us recognize the Holy Spirit initially
encountered in the sacraments. That is why development is an on-going
process, a re-creative process making us new and whole again.
Today, we see renewal movements like Focolare, marriage encounter,
Neocatechumenate, family advocacy groups, Life in the Spirit Seminars,
silent retreats, etc. These movements help people experience the Holy
Spirit resulting in positive changes in their lives.
When asked if they received the Holy Spirit when they became
believers, the disciples in Ephesus answered, No, we were never even
told there was such a thing as Holy Spirit. Thats because it is only
through Jesus that the Holy Spirit can come to us.
The relationship aspect with God which Christ came to restore in
humankind is precisely that relationship shared by the Holy Trinity as
community. The Holy Spirit is the bond of love that exists to confer
the gift of peace which Jesus does to his followers. We can only have
peace if we truly seek it in the Holy Spirit but it does not come
easy. Jesus, however, assures us: Be brave. I have conquered the
world.

WHAT THE SPIRIT CAN DO
|
| |
|
"Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?" Acts 19:2
|
|
|
|
Twelve men in Ephesus humbled themselves by admitting to Paul that they had not so much as heard of the Holy Spirit (Acts 19:2). Then they gave their lives to Jesus, were baptized in His name, received the Spirit, and "began to speak in tongues and to utter prophecies" (Acts 19:5-6). The Holy Spirit working through these men resulted in:
-
all the inhabitants of the province of Asia hearing the word of God in two years (Acts 19:10),
-
"extraordinary miracles," healings, and deliverances (Acts 19:11-12),
-
the fear of God falling on all, and many Christians repenting of their involvement in the occult (Acts 19:17-19),
-
the Word of the Lord continuing "to spread with influence and power" (Acts 19:20),
-
the idolatry and the economy of the city of Ephesus being significantly affected (Acts 19:25-27), and
-
"a serious disturbance" breaking out "concerning the new way," that is, concerning Christianity (Acts 19:23).
It is amazing what the Holy Spirit can do through a few people to transform individuals and society! Imagine what the Holy Spirit can do through you to "overcome the world" (Jn 16:33), if you will only let it be done to you according to God's word! (Lk 1:38) Come, Holy Spirit! |
|
|
|
Prayer: Father, may I realize that only the Holy Spirit can "renew the face of the earth" (Ps 104:30). Holy Spirit, work through me.

Promise: "I tell you all this that in Me you may find peace. You will suffer in the world. But take courage! I have overcome the world." Jn 16:33

29. His disciples said to him, Lo, now you speak plainly, and speak no proverb.
30. Now are we sure that you know all things, and need not that any man should ask you; by this we believe that you came forth from God.
31. Jesus answered them, Do you now believe?
32. Behold, the hour comes, yea, is now come, that you shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone; and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
33. These things I have spoken to you, that in me you might have peace. In the world you shall have tribulation; but be of good cheer: I have overcome the world.
CHRYS. The disciples were so refreshed with the thought of being in favor with the Father, that they say they are sure He knows all things: His disciples said to Him, Now you speak plainly, and speak no proverb.
AUG. But why do they say so, when the hour in which He was to speak without proverbs was yet future, and only promised? Because, our Lord's communications still continuing proverbs to them, they are so far from understanding them, that they do not even understand their not understanding them.
CHRYS. But since His answer met what was in their minds, they add, Now we are sure that you know all things. See how imperfect they yet were, after so many and great things now at last to say, Now we are sure &c. saying it too as if they were conferring a favor. And need not that any man should ask you, i.e. you know what offends us, before we tell You, and you have relieved us by saying that the Father loves us.
AUG. Why this remark? To one Who knew all things, instead of saying, you need not that any man should ask You; it would have been more appropriate to have said, you need not to ask any man; yet we know that both of these were done, viz. that our Lord both asked questions, and was asked. But this is soon explained; for both were for the benefit, not of Himself, but of those whom He asked questions of, or by whom He was asked. He asked questions of men not in order to learn Himself, but to teach them: and in the case of those who asked questions of Him, such questions were necessary to them in order to gain the knowledge they wanted; but they were not necessary to Him to tell Him what that was, because He knew the wish of the inquirer, before the question was put. Thus to know men's thoughts beforehand was no great thing for the Lord, but to the minds of babes it was a great thing: By this we know that you came forth from God.
HILARY. They believe that He came forth from God, because He does the works of God. For whereas our Lord had said both, I came forth from the Father, and, I am come into the world from the Father, they testified no wonder at the latter words, I am come into the world, which they had often heard before. But their reply shows a belief in and appreciation of the former, I came forth from the Father. And they notice this in their reply: By this we believe that you came forth from God; not adding, and are come into the world, for they knew already that He was sent from God, but had not yet received the doctrine of His eternal generation. That unutterable doctrine they now began to see for the first time in consequence of these words, and therefore reply that He spoke no longer in parables. For God is not born from God after the manner of human birth; His is a coming forth from, rather than a birth from, God. He is one from one; not a portion, not a defection, not a diminution, not a derivation, not a pretension, not a passion, but the birth of living nature from living nature. He is God coming forth from God, not a creature appointed to the name of God; He did not begin to be from nothing, but He came forth from an abiding nature. To come forth has the signification of birth, not of beginning.
AUG. Lastly, He reminds them of their w weak tender age in respect of the inner man. Jesus answered them, Do you now believe?
BEDE. Which can be understood in two ways, either as reproaching or affirming. If the former, the meaning is, you have awaked somewhat late to belief, for behold the hour comes, yea is now come, that you shall be scattered every man to his home. If the latter, it is, That which you believe is true, but behold the hour comes, &c.
AUG. For they did not only with their bodies leave His body, when He was taken, but with their minds the faith.
CHRYS. You shall be scattered; i.e. when I am betrayed, fear shall so possess you, that you will not be able even to take to flight together. But I shall suffer no harm in consequence: And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.
AUG. He wishes to advance them so far as to understand that He had not separated from the Father because He had come forth from the Father.
CHRYS. These things have I said to you, that you might have peace; i.e. that you may not reject Me from your minds. For not only when I am taken shall you suffer tribulation, but so long as you are in the world: In the world you shall have tribulation.
GREG. As if He said, Have Me within you to comfort you, because you will have the world without you.
AUG. The tribulation of which He speaks was to commence thus, i.e. in every one being scattered to his home, but was not to continue so. For in saying, And leave Me alone, He does not mean this to apply to them in their sufferings after His ascension. They were not to desert Him then, but to abide and have peace in Him. Wherefore He adds, Be of good cheer.
CHRYS. i.e. raise up your spirits again; when the Master is victorious, the disciples should not be dejected; I have overcome the world.
AUG. When the Holy Spirit was given them, they were of good cheer, and, in His strength, victorious. For He would not have overcome the world, had the world overcome His members. When He says, These things have I spoken to you, that in Me you might have peace, He refers not only to what He has just said, but to what He had said all along, either from the time that He first had disciples, or since the supper, when He began this long and wonderful discourse. He declares this to be the object of His whole discourse, viz. that in Him they might have peace. And this peace shall have no end, but is itself the end of every pious action and intention.
