Conservatives [Rabbis] Give Gay Wedding Guidance

Rabbis Adopt Two New Frameworks for Same-Sex Marriages

When Gerald Skolnik, the president of a group of 1,600 Conservative rabbis, was asked to officiate at a gay wedding last year, he didn’t know where to start. “I was flying by the seat of my pants,” he said. Should the wedding look like a heterosexual ceremony, or something else entirely?

Now he has guidelines to turn to. After years of deliberation, the Conservative Rabbinical Assembly has provided guidance to rabbis for performing same-sex marriages.

On May 31, the assembly’s Committee on Jewish Law and Standards approved templates, culminating a six-year-long process that began in 2006 when Conservative leaders first officially sanctioned gay relationships. Created by Rabbis Daniel Nevins, Avram Reisner and Elliot Dorff, the ritual guidelines detail two types of gay weddings, as well as gay divorce. “Both versions are egalitarian,” said Nevins. “They differ mostly in style—one hews closely to the traditional wedding ceremony while the other departs from it.”

The guidelines passed on a vote of 13 to 0 in the Committee on Jewish Law and Standards, with one rabbi abstaining.

Neither template includes kiddushin, a step in the ceremony in which the groom presents his bride with a ring. It is regarded by most traditionally observant Jews as the essence of the ceremony that constitutes it as an act of marriage.

Instead, the templates detail a ring exchange that is based on Jewish partnership law, an established halachic concept, said Nevins.

“We acknowledge that these partnerships are distinct from those discussed in the Talmud as ‘according to the laws of Moses and Israel,’” said Nevins, referring to the words used in kiddushin, “but we celebrate them with the same sense of holiness and joy as that expressed in heterosexual marriages.”

“I was flying by the seat of my pants.”

No, you were sinking by the seat of your (or another’s) seat of the pants. Sad. In a day when morals are so easily surrendered, what does the future hold?

Sad to see the children of Abraham fall again and again. Why do they turn their backs to God? Utter weakness in the face evil and sin.

LOL! What will the “Halacha Committee” for these fake Jews “vote” on next? Making pork kosher? Enjoy the pretense, while you can, sodomists. The future belongs to the Orthodox.

“Utter weakness in the face evil and sin.”

Sounds like a case of issues with “Heblews”. Embrace perversity!

Perversity is our strength!

“but we celebrate them with the same sense of holiness and joy as that expressed in heterosexual marriages.”

This culture's obsession with fairness will be its downfall.

I’m a Noachide who started out in a “conservative” synagogue that was composed mainly of liberals. I did like that married men and women were able to sit together therein. But as my wife didn’t attend with me, I eventually left it for an Orthodox shul with ties to Hasidism, and have been fairly happy since.

It wouldn’t have surprised me to see this from a Reform Rabbi, but a CONSERVATIVE Rabbi?

They lost their “conservative” moniker when they did this.

Do not confuse the word “conservative” when referring to Jews. This word was initially used because there was a group of Jews who did not want to follow all of the laws of Halacha, so they broke away from the “orthodox” “traditional” and “hasidic” and began calling themselves “conservative”. It does NOT mean they are politically conservative by any means. Most quote unquote “conservative” Jews are very liberal politically. After they broke off, there was a new branch that wanted to do even less so they broke off from the conservatives and became “reform” “unitarian” or pretty much any way the wind blows JINOS. 30 years ago, conservative Jews were in fact very similar to Othodox aside from just a few items like driving to synagogue instead of walking and not separating men and women in the sanctuary.

Today, so called “conservative” Jews are closer to Reform and they are all liberal. They make up Jewish Law as they go along—a “living breathing Torah”—if you will. The traditional, orthodox and hasidic communities are 78% politically conservative and in my opinion (as a Jew) the only ones practicing true Judaism.

Lesson: “Conservative Jew” = “JINO” = “liberal politics”.

Actually, the Reform Movement came first, and tried to impose Sunday as the day of worship and a complete end to head coverings and eating kosher.

The Conservative Movement started as a reaction to Reform, seeking to “conserve” some of the more distinctive Jewish practices. In the UK, the movement is actually known as “Liberal Judaism.”

In practice, there’s little or no difference between the two groups now.

There is no Conservative Judaism in America. There is only Reform Judaism running 5 years behind the lunatics. As a person who would be a Reform Jew, as per its original intent, I am appalled.
