Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley Laments Discord on Nuns

Says church holds them in high esteem despite investigation

ATLANTA - Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley, the Roman Catholic archbishop of Boston, said Wednesday that he is worried and saddened that the controversy over the Vatican’s rebuke of a US nuns’ group may have fostered a perception the church is inhospitable to women.

O’Malley spoke for the first time about the situation in an interview at a gathering of bishops, as supporters of beleaguered nuns protested outside. Earlier this week, Vatican officials met with leaders of the nuns’ group, but they did not resolve their differences.

“It’s a great concern,’’ he said. “The last thing the church needs is more controversies. As we try to evangelize people, we are trying to get them to focus on the centrality of Christ and trying to promote family life and service to the poor, and I see these things as great distractions sometimes.’’

The vital leadership that nuns and lay women have undertaken in Catholic institutions and parish life shows the esteem in which the church holds them and the “great debt of gratitude’’ all Catholics owe them, O’Malley said.

O’Malley declined to assign blame for what he described as misrepresentation of the church’s attitude toward women, but a spokesman later clarified that O’Malley believes the church hierarchy could do a better job communicating complex subjects and that the media have unfairly characterized the issues and linked matters that are unrelated to one another.

The twice-a-year gathering of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, held at a large downtown hotel here, did not formally address the Vatican’s recent censure of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, a professional organization that represents the leaders of 80 percent of the country’s 56,000 sisters.

In April, the Vatican cited the group for seeming to embrace “radical feminism,’’ raising.........

Close but no cigar.

The last thing the Church needs is more scandal caused by heretical religious and clergy, lavender shirtlifters and weak bishops. Scandal is not the same as "controversy".

Controversy is not necessarily a bad thing, provided it arises from the Church defending its own teachings and confronting the powers of darkness, such as the current controversy caused by Obama and his political thugs. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that they Church needs this sort of controversy. It needs to be persecuted and tested for the sake of its own vitality.

“...may have fostered a perception the church is inhospitable to women.”

No, those who are engaged in impropriety are the ones trying to hide behind accusations of the the “church being inhospitable to women.” It is their impropriety that is in question, not their gender.

“Mr. Travon T. Tyrone has been arrested for armed robbery while attempting to hold up a liquor store. He has 10 prior convictions for armed robbery of the same liquor store. When asked if he thought this arrest was ‘fair’, by a reporter, he responded that ‘It just prove(sic) that the police are racists.’”

O’Malley believes the church hierarchy could do a better job communicating complex subjects

There's nothing complex about saying that a bunch of so-called nuns who support abortion, oppose the Church on every life issue and even every part of its internal law (ordination of women, etc.), are completely wrong and are not being faithful to the teachings of the Church and their vocation. What is there not to understand?

The only thing that is hard to understand is why they didn't do this much earlier. But I imagine that would be thanks to people like Cdl O'Malley.

Doesn’t the good Cardinal remember that this happened to the seminaries when they were empty?

After the seminaries were cleaned out and a good screening put in place for those desiring to become priest, the seminaries are now bursting at the seams.

Please remember, Cardinal O’Malley in your prayers.

Problem is that “scandal” and “controversies”, has sadly, become “one and the same” word.

Why don’t the bishops just publicize the top 10 worst examples of what the women religious have said, so people can understand what the problem is? Then say that not every women religious has gotten off track like this, but we are dealing with those that are.

And don’t say that you are afraid to give the impression that the Church is anti-women. Point to the courageous, holy women in the past who have (figuratively) slapped errant church leaders upside the head when they went wrong, and say that you are cleaning house with the same spirit, and in honor of those women who were righteous.

A few weeks ago, I saw a woman who was always at Daily Mass. I was so happy to see her since it’s been a good year since I had seen her at Mass. I told her I missed her, asked where she had been, or if she had gotten a new job or something. She said no, she was just sick and tired of the church’s politics. She said she was upset when they put out the first letter on Obamacare and “now that they’ve gone after the nuns,” she isn’t going to church anymore! I was appalled because I always thought that anyone who went to Daily Mass must have a pretty good grasp on the church’s teachings, but apparently not!

It’s very upsetting when you meet people like that. We have some in our church too; I’ve never figured out how they can reconcile the contradictions.

The Cardinal was surprised by comments about his attendance at a mass for Ted Kennedy in which he was virtually canonized. With men this oblivious at the head of the Church, no wonder we have such problems.

I'm in Boston (alas!) -- I was kind of afraid to click on this for fear he'd come out foursquare on the side of LCWR. I'm not sure this is better -- or just more mealy-mouthed!
