ATLANTA (CNS) -- The U.S. bishops June 13 approved a proposal to draft a statement on work and the economy as a way to raise the profile of growing poverty and the struggles unemployed people are experiencing.
Titled "Catholic Reflections on Work, Poverty and a Broken Economy," the message would advance the bishops' priority of human life and dignity to demonstrate the new evangelization in action, explained Bishop Stephen E. Blaire of Sacramento, Calif., chairman of the Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development.
The bishops voted 171-26 during their spring meeting in Atlanta to move ahead with a draft of the document. It is expected to be ready in time for a final vote at the bishops' fall meeting in November.
The message would be a follow-up to a Sept. 15, 2011, letter by Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan of New York, president of the U.S. bishops' conference, in which he urged bishops and priests across the country to preach about "the terrible toll the current economic turmoil is taking on families and communities."
That letter was sent at the urging of the bishops' Administrative Committee, which directs the work of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops between general assemblies. The committee "wanted something more than a public statement," the cardinal said in the letter.

May God spare them from great embarrassment by striking them all dumb and taking away their keyboards.
We don’t need to hear the bishops - especially those on something called the “Domestic Justice” committee - once again bloviating about things they know nothing about, or at any rate, nothing that they didn’t learn in Warmed-Over Marxism 101.
The really telling question would be if they comply with Apostolos Suos and seek a Recognito from CDF prior to its release.
No, I’m not holding my breath...
As long as they spare the false social justice gospel drivel of Jim Wallis.
Please don’t. The economy is a question of prudential judgment and the realm of the laity. The bishops have no particular expertise or authority over the subject.
The bishops solution to high unemployment will be more government.
Muddle the message so that Obama cannot accuse us of attacking him over the mandate (we don’t want no Cristero War here...)
A small minority of the bishops work tirelessly, distilling crystal-clear, sparkling, loaded-with-vitamins nectar for our consumption. They bring this life-giving liquid to the bishops meeting, where the large majority are ready with a vat of tap water to add to that nectar. And that is what they deliver, over and over.
Why don’t they prepare a message on Jesus and the Bible?
