Marco Rubio Says He Felt 'Called' to Leave Mormon Church for Catholic Church

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said he felt "called" to leave the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), or Mormon Church, to join the Catholic Church in a Sunday interview on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Rubio – who is currently being considered as a vice presidential nominee by Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who is a Mormon – explained that his mother decided to join the LDS Church after the family moved to Las Vegas when Rubio was eight years old. Some of Rubio's relatives were, and still are, members of the LDS Church, so the family had some familiarity with the church through them.

His mother wanted a "wholesome environment to raise" her family, Rubio said, and she was "a big admirer" of the "family-friendly environment" within the LDS Church.

Rubio explained that he decided to leave the LDS Church and join the Catholic Church four years later. It was one of two occasions in his life when he had been "called back" to the Catholic Church.

"For spiritual reasons, when I was about 12 years old, I started feeling called back to the Catholic Church and it was nothing against the Mormon Church, it was just a calling, that's happened twice in my life," Rubio said.

Rubio, whose parents immigrated to the United States from Cuba, wrote a book about his life, published last week, called An American Son: A Memoir. Rubio's religious faith is one of the book's topics, he mentioned.

Don’t really care what Amnesty Queen Marco Rubio has to say anymore.

He isn’t part of the solution, he’s part of the problem!

Rubio has been baptized into 2 different religions, one as an infant and one with eyes open.

Someone may ask him if Mormonism is a Christian religion and it won’t be easy for him to evade the question.

Rubio was on "Fox & Friends" this morning and came across pretty well. He said he thought the Arizona immigration law was constitutional (that was before the SC ruling was made public). I still think there are other choices that may be better for the ticket, but if he is picked I think he may be able to withstand the media onslaught.

Part of Palin's problem was that her selection was a last-minute decision by McCain, so she didn't have much time to prepare for the media attacks. That won't be true if Rubio is picked.

I agree with your statements. Personally, I haven’t decided on a VP candidate....but I have to say that I think Paul Ryan would be very good.

Much more time needs to be spent looking at where they can all achieve the most positive results, where they are most needed....and how they will perform as either President or VP. I tend to agree with Sen. Rubio...that more experience and accomplishing his goals in the Senate would be ideal.

I like Ryan although it may be better for him to stay in the House of Representatives. There are several other good possibilities. I don't know how much weight should be given to helping win the election vs. picking the best possible person to be President if something happened to Romney before the term was over.

The worst decision in that regard was Lincoln's decision in 1864 to drop Hannibal Hamlin and replace him with Andrew Johnson. FDR's insistence on Henry Wallace in 1940 could have been a disaster if FDR had died a year earlier than he did--all of mainland Europe might have ended up in the Soviet bloc if Wallace had then won re-election in 1944.

I've always figured that Obama's choice of Biden had a lot to do with the Russian invasion of the Republic of Georgia in 2008--all of a sudden Obama felt he needed to make up for his own lack of credibility in foreign affairs (so he picked someone who had an extremely bad track record of guessing right on foreign policy, but would win praise from the MSM).

Marco Rubio, the 'Catholic' senator-elect from Florida, attends and 'donates thousands' to a hardline Protestant church

And here I am thinking, so what if he's RC. I guess I should reevaluate voting for any conservative that's not a Born Again Evangelical Christian. Silly me, I would have voted for Santorum, even Gingrich, if either of them were the nominee.

Fox News did a profile on Rubio a short time ago which showed him going to early Mass - apparently part of his daily routine. This is the first time I’ve heard of him going to a nondenominational Baptist Church.

As usual, you display your high level of obtuseness.

Ship Marco Rubio back to Cuba where they have free health care. Cuba could use a man of his stature.
