A JEWISH ritual in which a circumciser sucks blood from a newborn's penis has killed two babies in the past decade, US authorities said overnight.
The cases of herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) infection were all documented in New York City from 2000 to 2011 and several were within the same neighbourhood.

Very sad. But two babies in ten years? How many babies die in childbirth in a large city over the course of ten years? I would imagine more than two.
If this particular rabbi has a herpes infection, then presumably he should stop doing this. But even there, I’d be curious how many successful circumcisions he performed over the course of ten years.

The whole “traditional” ritual seems a bit unseemly to me, herpes or not. Somehow, I have a real hard time believing that Abraham was putting his mouth on people’s penises.
Why does the media continue to blast this out, when it only happened twice and the last time years ago? Meanwhile they NEVER cover the totally routine practice of female genital mutilation by Muslims worldwide - hundreds of thousands of victims every single year!
Far more babies are probably killed by Gentile, neo-Nazi homosexuals than by circumcision accidents.

I don’t know much about the ritual but I do know that in Abraham’s day there weren’t a lot of operating rooms and modern medical equipment.
You would think a health regulation would prevent people from being a moil or mohel if they had herpes. Or at very least not be able to do this part of the circumcision this way. Anyway in my OT it doesn’t say it has to be done this way at all, and I know I wasn’t circumcised this way.
Mohels don’t have to be rabbis.

I live about 50 miles from the City and heard a little bit about this on the radio news yesterday.
I wondered how one go herpes from a circumcision. I was quite stunned when I found out exactly what they were doing.
Nonsense. I object to this article, when this has been reported endlessly in American media.
I thought we were not supposed to consume blood.
I would think that HaShem would frown upon such a disgusting practice that clearly spreads disease.

Drawing blood is necessary, using ones mouth is not. This process places a child at risk. Most ultra-orthodox Jews do not do this. Some will not live in the real world and are so stuck on tradition, that they ignore the law.

Jews on the other hand are civilised folks, intelligent folks etc. A death of 1 Jew in cold logical terms (and I know, I know a human life is a human life) leads to more of a loss for the scientific and intellectual community than the loss of one Moslem who is nearly never given the opportunity to be anything but a lower civilized being.

Yes it is. A plastic or glass tube may be used, from what I understand.
I believe this story is 6 or 7 years old.
