After rumors circulated earlier in the week, BYU’s Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship confirmed today that Daniel C. Peterson and his associate editors would be removed from the staff of the Mormon Studies Review, previously the FARMS Review. The periodical, which publishes articles and reviews on LDS-related topics and books, was founded by Peterson 23 years ago. Along with Peterson were also dismissed his associate editors Louis C. Midgley, George L. Mitton, Gregory L. Smith and Robert White.
In a brief, anonymous statement posted on the Maxwell Institute’s website today the Institute stated, “For many years the FARMS Review has filled an important niche in the intellectual life of its many readers under the vigorous editorship of Professor Daniel C. Peterson and his associates…. We thank these colleagues and the many contributing writers to the Review for their industry and scholarship over the past twenty-three years.” The Institute also stated that publication of the Review would desist indefinitely until a new editorial team was formed and that subscribers would be receiving a refund.
In a leaked e-mail sent June 17, Maxwell Institute director M. Gerald Bradford wrote to Peterson, “The time has come for us to take the Review in a different direction. … What we need to do to properly affect this change in the Review is to ask someone else, someone working in the mainstream of Mormon studies, who has a comparable vision to my own for what it can accomplish, to edit the publication.”
The Review has been criticized in the past for ad hominem attacks in its publication. Reportedly the tipping point for Peterson’s dismissal was a personal 100-page article targeted against John Dehlin, the founder of Mormon Stories, which often focuses on controversial topics within Mormonism such as homosexuality and apostasy. Bradford has the article pulled reportedly after being requested by multiple General Authorities and University President Cecil O. Samuelson, who apparently read at least portions of it. Peterson claims that Bradford and others never read the article.
Almost immediately after the Maxwell Institute’s website posted the public statement, Peterson posted about his dismissal on his personal blog. Peterson stated that he was not receiving the change “enthusiastically” and that he has “deep concerns about the significance of my dismissal (and the reasons behind it) for the future direction of the Maxwell Institute.” Peterson also suggested that the reason he was fired from the Review was because of insinuations “that the Review was in a crisis that necessitated emergency mid-volume intervention, and that it now requires a post-Peterson “detoxing” period before it can be permitted to resume publication.”
Peterson also complained about the manner in which he and his associate editors were fired, saying that the e-mail notifying him of his dismissal came “completely out of the blue” and that the other editors “didn’t even receive an e-mail” notifying them of their removal from the staff. He stated that one of them even inquired of Bradford days earlier but did not receive a response. Another claims to have called Bradford but also received no response. Peterson himself says he has e-mailed Bradford several times but received no acknowledgement. According to Bill Hamblin, another BYU professor who has published many times with the Maxwell Institute, “Bradford fired Dan [Peterson] by email while Dan was on a multi-week journey in the Middle East specifically so Dan could not be in Provo to defend himself.”
Hamblin goes on to say that the firing came as “the culmination of a long-term struggle between radically different visions for the future of the Institute. Peterson wishes to continue the traditional heritage of FARMS, providing cutting edge scholarship and apologetics on LDS scripture. Bradford wants to move the Institute in a different direction, focusing on more secular-style studies that will be accessible and acceptable to non-Mormon scholars. Bradford is especially opposed to LDS apologetics, which he wants to terminate entirely as part of the mission of the Institute.”
Bradford and the Maxwell Institute are currently not making public statements regarding the situation, other than the previously cited statement posted on their website.
Yup. Mormon veteran hitman apologist Daniel Peterson -- and several of his FARMS apologist cronies -- have been dumped...at least from this publication's role (Peterson remains employed @ BYU).

Yup...this pub needs a "detoxing" period from the Mormon apologists. And Peterson isn't obeying his "authorities" if he keeps making a public fuss about all this! (Maybe he needs a one-on-one visit from his bishop "heavy" so that he realizes he needs to fade off into the Mormon woodwork!)

Ah, just face it BYU students & grassroots Mormons...that's just the way the "kind, compassionate" BYU admin & general authorities do things 'round there...they fire people from afar (by e-mail)...and don't even inform four of their employees they were fired!
(So much for the claim that this is the "only true and living church on the face of the earth" (Lds Doctrine & Covenants 1:30)...)

Review writers responded to critics’ allegations by dissecting their arguments — and motives — sometimes writing scathing and often personal attacks on those who challenged LDS origins. It was, they believed, the essence of apologetics.
Yup. We've seen it on FR big time, too...how the ad hominen attacks -- and questioning internal motives -- was a big part of the Lds apologists who made their appearances here...many of them wrote highly provocative posts, some which got them zotted.
We see that Peterson was their negative model!
Well, with the annual FAIR Mormon Apologetics Conference scheduled for Aug 2-3 — and with Peterson being the closing speaker (his topic is supposedly Of ‘Mormon Studies’ and Apologetics), I guess the Mormons will be engaged in fireworks this year from July 3 —> Aug. 3!!!!!
Who the mormon church is and what it teaches will be front and center with a Romney nomination. This heavy vetting of mormonism will be the biggest plus of his nomnation.

They forever wind up following in the nefarious and notorious polygirl & polywomen ways of Joseph Smith -- either conceding his character of spiritually coercing 14 yo girls to marry him so that it will "go well" for their family members in eternity...or forever having to feel Smith's dust kicked up from his "activities" on the trail of his life.

One of the quotes mentions Jesus Christ several times; and then these apologists say they do all that re: the Mormon Jesus so "that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins."
Now what is interesting -- and contradictory -- about Mormons' focus on their children needing a "remission of their sins?"
Well, this is indeed biblical (based upon Acts 2:38-39)...but ya know, when you look at it, 'tis not very Book of Mormonish...
First, the Bible reference: 38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness [KJV uses the word, "remission" here] of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children... (Acts 2:38-39)
But when you flip open the Book of Mormon, its last book from Moroni, chapter 8, vv. 8-11...well, look especially at v. 11: And their little children need no repentance, neither baptism."
In fact, v. 8 says that "little children are whole" and "are NOT capable of committing sin..."So ... apparently little Mormon children have...
...never thrown temper tantrums...
...never insisted on their own way...
...always shared their toys with siblings and fellow nursery wards...
...always obeyed their parents upon first impulse...
...etc...
Yet, we see these apologists do recognize their need for their children to receive remission of their sins...
But if they are not capable of sin til later -- why do they then need to be baptized? Why does Joseph Smith say -- in Lds "scripture" (Doctrine & Covenants 68:27) that "And their children shall be baptized for the remission of their sins when eight years old..."???
Well, which is it, Mormon apologists?
Are Mormon little children "not capable of sin" (Moroni 8:8) and therefore "need no repentance" (or baptism) (Moroni 8:11) -- as the Book of Mormon claims? Or, do they need baptism "for the remission of their sins" at age 8 -- but not before age 8? What's so "magical" about an 8th birthday that they become sinners then?
And were these children REALLY sin-free pre-age 8?
If they were NOT sin free before age 8, wouldn't their sin need to be addressed before then...? (Especially given that some children pre-age 8 actually die???)
And...given Psalm 51:5...AND 58:3...THE Bible knows of no "age 8" "age of accountability" -- because as humans -- we can all respond...and even the very young can trust...

Revelation given to Joseph Smith the Prophet and Sidney Rigdon, at Hiram, Ohio, December 1, 1831. HC 1: 238–239. The Prophet had continued to translate the Bible with Sidney Rigdon as his scribe until this revelation was received, at which time it was temporarily laid aside so as to enable them to fulfill the instruction given herein. The brethren were to go forth to preach in order to allay the unfriendly feelings that had developed against the Church as a result of the publication of some newspaper articles by Ezra Booth, who had apostatized.
1–4, Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon are sent forth to proclaim the gospel; 5–11, Enemies of the saints shall be confounded.

1 And now I finish my record concerning the destruction of my people, the Nephites. And it came to pass that we did march forth before the Lamanites.
2 And I, Mormon, wrote an epistle unto the king of the Lamanites, and desired of him that he would grant unto us that we might gather together our people unto the land of Cumorah, by a hill which was called Cumorah, and there we could give them battle.

In other words, Mormonism doesn't have warts so let's redirect our attention to the perceived warts of others.
