Ronald W. Walker, professor emeritus of history at Brigham Young University, authored the paper...
...before the campaign ran its course, Mormon polygamy became an issue, with Republican newspapers and politicians attacking...Democrats for supporting legislation that in theory might allow the Utah Territory to favor plural marriage, Walker wrote.
The Republican Party platform thus denounced what it called "the twin relics of barbarism": the extension of slavery in the territories and Mormon plural marriage.

"It was probably inevitable that polygamy would find its way into the Republican Party's platform in 1856," Walker wrote. "Californian John Willes was given the task of writing the plank on federal authority of the territories. He decided to join slavery and polygamy together 'to make war upon polygamy,' he said, 'and at the same time strengthen the case against slavery.'"
His resolution declared: "Resolved: that the Constitution confers upon Congress sovereign power over the territories of the United States for their government and that in the exercise of this power it is both the right and the duty of Congress to prohibit in the territories those twin relics of barbarism: polygamy and slavery."
The phrase "twin relics of barbarism" became one of the most popular and famous slogans of American presidential and political history, Walker wrote.

Don't underestimate the 19th century grassroots. Just as Brigham Young was undercutting the fertility rate of his 57 wives to about one-child per wife -- and taking wives away from other men -- 19th century America realized what the Utah Mormons were doing and soundly opposed it.
In 1898, Utah (a new state then) sent a polygamous to Congress. (Or so they thought). B.H. Roberts was elected as a Utah Democrat to the House. But Roberts had taken on yet a third wife around 1893...three years AFTER the Mormon Manifesto which began to put brakes on polygamy.
Grassroots America erupted. They collected 7 million signatures on 28 banners objecting to seating Roberts as a Congressman and sent it to Congress, which, in turn, refused to seat Roberts and sent him packing.
So much about Mormon "scriptures" of that day saying they were to obey the law of the land!

Yes, the Dems have been anti-family for quite some time now.
Their advocacy/push for polygamy in the 19th century showed its true colors even back then! (And it was raced-laced or race-based politics that led them to a long lock on the Southern states for quite some time)
Women who found polygamy scandalous! may not have had the vote, but the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world. What man would risk perpetual domestic disharmony over such an issue?
I must note that just because Republicans opposed slavery and polygamy, does not mean that Democrats married the issues in their campaigns either.
In fact the article states that they avoided supporting polygamy.
Wives tend to be pretty territorial when it comes to their man, and they would be at equal risk of domestic disharmony as any other fellow.

While it is twoo that the mormnon gods did change their minds (err we call that revelation) about celestial marriage and blacks and the priesthood, they err it err she err he no I was right the first time THEY have not as yet given any direction on females
(I gather you mean the hallowed priesthood exclusive only to Mormon men)
As with other revelation, we are praying and praying that the Mormon gods will change their minds about including females in all things Mormon.
This praying and begging and gnashing of teeth has been going on I am sure since the first brave pioneers set out for zion-behind-the-rocky-curtain.
As yet there has been no answer to our ernest desire to include our sisters in the joys and blessings of the full gospel(trademark etc)
The other day there was one gentile female on FR, one of them Inwomen (Spit) who was said to be a prophet, but that would not be possible as I, Ask Tommy, am the only prophet of the mormon gods, and anyway she is just a female.
