San Francisco: Climate tense ahead of new archbishop’s installation
La Stampa ^ | 7/30/2012 | Maria Teresa Pontara Pederiva

Pure provocation. This is how the series of reactions to the appointment of Mgr. Cordileone as archbishop of the America’s most anti-conformist city can be summed up. Cordileone is currently Bishop of Oakland where he still celebrates mass according to the ancient Rite.

This is a prestigious role for 56 year old Salvatore Cordileone from San Diego. He was appointed Archbishop of San Francisco by Benedict XVI last week, after 3 years as leader of the Diocese of Oakland (where 26 priests have been accused of abusing minors) – a vast territory with a high rate of urban crime. Just across the San Francisco Bay lies his future title of cardinal.

But Cordileone is the bishop - the only one among his Californian colleagues - to have campaigned in favour of the famous Proposal 8 which put a stop to civil unions between same-sex couples. The Proposal was subsequently declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court because it was deemed discriminatory. It seems he even contributed 6 thousand dollars out of his own pocket for the campaign and last autumn he wrote to Congress again, supporting marriage as one of the key principles of freedom.

As chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defence of Marriage, no one expects him to just stand by and watch a practice which has already been consolidated in Capitol Hill, where same-sex unions have formed part of the city’s social fabric for years (receiving broad local media coverage). He had once defined them as “the Devil’s final attack on marriage” and last autumn he organised a petition to try and gather parents’ signatures against a young girl having an abortion (but he also said he was in favour of the death penalty being abolished).

This may turn the clocks back to when Cardinal Levada went from being Archbishop of San Francisco to Prefect Emeritus of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, in a climate of constant verbal conflicts between the ecclesiastical and civil spheres.

Just as polemic was the declaration he made during a press conference at St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco (where he alternated between English and Spanish) following his nomination. He stated marriage could only derive from a bond between a man and a woman and that he could not see how this could be considered discrimination.

According to the Oakland Tribune, Charles Martel, President of Catholics for Marriage Equality, is expecting a battle. But Cordileone also has fervent supporters such as Ron Prentice, President of the California Family Council, who immediately expressed “deep gratitude” for his appointment.

Meanwhile, Cordileone is focusing on the “challenge” - as he calls it - that lies ahead of him: the cultural and ethnic diversity of the Nation’s most extraordinary city with over half a million Catholics more than half of which are of Hispanic-Latino or Asian origin.

Certainly it is discrimination and it is a good thing.

Discrimination is a fact of life. One must discriminate on a daily basis.

A wise parent teaches his children to discriminate early in life. You want your children to discriminate when making friends. You want your children’s friends to be polite and not to be trouble makers.

In your own life you choose not to have friends that are drug users or felons. You wisely discriminate against having friends that are violent or may bring you in to disrepute.

When you marry you choose a person of the opposite sex; you discriminate against your own sex when choosing a spouse. It is discrimination and it is the proper thing to do.

If statistics are consistent, I would say probably about 1 or 2 out of the 26 abused females.

A more pertinent quesiton would be how many of those allegations alleged abuse took place by priests while Cordileone was the bishop there (and how did he deal with those allegations). An even more pertinent question will be how many priests ordained by Cordileone while bishop of Oakland will go forward to abuse minors (of either sex).

Of course, we won't have the answer to the second pertinent question for several decades.

Let us offer a Memorare to the Blessed Mother for Archbishop Cordileone. And...

Our Lord asks us to pray for His priests not judge them.
They are Satan’s target, above all. Why wouldn’t they be,
They are the means to God’s greatest graces.

There are sexual predators in all walks of life, recent findings show most of them are homosexual not pedophile. Homosexuals have many perversions.

I notice in the Religion Forum, quite a lot of threads
attacking the Priesthood, remember Our Lord’s request.

I read Father Vogel is up for canonization.

Never Attack a Priest

The Pieta Prayerbook contains this admonition:

CRITICISM OF PRIESTS
Our Lord’s revelations to Mutter Vogel

“One should NEVER attack a priest, even when he’s in error, rather one should pray and do penance that I’ll grant him My grace again. He alone fully represents Me, even when he doesn’t live after My example!” (page 29, Mutter Vogel’s Worldwide Love, St. Grignion Publishing House, Altoting, South Germany (29. 6. 1929)

When a Priest falls we should extend him a helping hand THROUGH PRAYER AND NOT THROUGH ATTACKS! I myself will be his judge, NO ONE BUT I!” “Whoever voices judgment over a priest has voiced it over me; child, never let a Priest be attacked, take up his defense.” (Feast of Christ the King 1937) “Child, Never judge your confessor, rather pray much for him and offer every Thursday, through the hands of My blessed Mother, Holy Communion (for Him) (18.6. 1939) “Never again accept an out-of-the-way word about a Priest, and speak no unkind word (about them) EVEN IF IT WERE TRUE! Every Priest is My Vicar and My heart will be sickened and insulted because of it! If you hear a judgment (against a Priest) pray a Hail Mary.” (28. 6. 1939)

Mary, Queen of the Clergy, pray for them.

For decades, the Vatican has appointed bishops to San Francisco (actually, the nation’s most conformist city, since it strictly adheres to whatever is considered PC at the moment) who were weak and really weren’t going to challenge the situation. We can see how well that worked out: all that came out of it was an unrestrained, more powerful gay/PC movement. It also left decent, faithful Catholics in SF feeling completely abandoned (I know, because I lived there for years, under two different dysfunctional bishops).

This is a different approach. I hope Cordileone lives up to his name, because they are going to attack him with everything they’ve got.

This man is standing in need of prayer and this Protestant will pray for him fervently.

“With GOD all things are possible” — even repentance, healing, and Christian revival in a den of iniquity like San Francisco.

Jonah 1:
1 Now the word of the Lord came to Jonas the son of Amathi, saying:

2 Arise, and go to Ninive the great city, and preach in it: for the wickedness thereof is come up before me.

...

Jonah 3:

3 And the word of the Lord came to Jonas the second time, saying:

2 Arise, and go to Ninive the great city: and preach in it the preaching that I bid thee.

3 And Jonas arose, and went to Ninive, according to the word of the Lord: now Ninive was a great city of three days’ journey.

4 And Jonas began to enter into the city one day’s journey: and he cried, and said: Yet forty days, and Ninive shall be destroyed.

5 And the men of Ninive believed in God: and they proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth from the greatest to the least.

6 And the word came to the king of Ninive; and he rose up out of his throne, and cast away his robe from him, and was clothed with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

7 And he caused it to be proclaimed and published in Ninive from the mouth of the king and of his princes, saying: Let neither men nor beasts, oxen nor sheep, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water.

8 And let men and beasts be covered with sackcloth, and cry to the Lord with all their strength, and let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the iniquity that is in their hands.

9 Who can tell if God will turn, and forgive: and will turn away from his fierce anger, and we shall not perish?

10 And God saw their works, that they were turned from their evil way: and God had mercy with regard to the evil which he had said that he would do to them, and he did it not.

If you are a Godless heathen and don’t believe in salvation through Christ why would a Catholic Archbishop be getting your panties in a bunch?

I am not a Catholic but even I know that is really an impossibility. “Catholics for Marriage Equality” would not be Catholics at all.

Much confusion and false teaching would be averted if groups like these were declared anathema.

I understand your frustration, but the courts will not uphold copyright or trademark protection for CatholicTM

It's an issue that came up decades ago with the friggin' aggregation of asshoops known as "Catholics for Choice" (now known as "Catholic Imbeciles") (I mean, that's what I call them.) The USCCB, in its custmary long-delayed and inefficient way, finally exposed and denounced them, they were formally banned from several dioceses, but it didn't affect them in the least; and there was and is no legal way to stop them using the word "Catholic".

I'd like to put an indelible purple dye on their faces. In the interests of consumer protection.

::::sigh::::

Just a thought.
