Prayers Requested for my 96-year old mother.

Posted on 08/05/2012 10:44:38 PM PDT by MarilynBr

The doctor sent my mom home less than 3 hours after we went to the ER on Thursday. But she is still having a rough time.

She has eaten only fluids and soft foods for about 3 years. But now she is choking on the things she eats part of the time. Since Sunday evening I am spoon feeding her everything even water so she takes really small sips and small bites. I am very worried for her.

I know that her time could be approaching. But if God has a way, I would like to see the choking healed for now.

One of her granddaughters is being married next month. They are having the wedding in Oregon instead of Arizona, so Grandma can attend the wedding. It would break my heart if she weren't well enough to go or she died before the wedding.

Back sometime before 1999, her feet were starting to give out for walking. She was getting so much pain. But a friend and I prayed for healing of her feet and ankles. Those prayers were answered with good quality orthotic shoe inserts and sturdy shoes and God's gracious answer to prayer.

I know that my mom's time on earth won't be a whole lot longer if this choking thing continues. Do we decide to go with a feeding tube for awhile? Would God give her a temporary reprieve from this problem for her sake and ours? I am asking God for that so my niece does not always have to remember her wedding as being right after her grandmother died?

When mom is able to eat and drink without problems, she still has a great deal of personality and enjoyment of life. So I am approaching God to intercede on her behalf for a healing to the swallowing problem. Please join me in prayer for her, too.

Sounds like your mom has dysphagia. Her doctor should refer you to a dietitian, or speech pathologist who should be able to help her overcome this and/or offer easier foods for her to consume. Sounds like she otherwise has a lot of fight and spunk so hopefully getting some assistance will help.

God Bless......

“I am asking God for that so my niece does not always have to remember her wedding as being right after her grandmother died? “

So much of how things hit you, is found in how you word them. If God calls her home, your niece should try to think of it as amazing luck that fiance’ actually got to meet her grandmother.
Try not to associate the wedding with losing her, try to sincerely think things such as how most girls would have lost that grandmother a decade sooner. I know it’s easy for me to say, and hard for her (and you) to do, but I would advise that general path.
Or the creative part of me wonders if grandma could actually be there, if the wedding could be moved up to tomorrow or tuesday?

But whatever you guys decide. Hang in there.

Also, people in ill health have a funny way of making it to events that they are excited to attend. So hang in there, pray, and be as happy and positive as you can for her.
ALso, if you have been in the ER with her, I bet you are worn out.

Think about getting some needed rest.

I will certainly pray for your mother. What did she go to the ER for? I suggest, if you haven’t... contacting her doctor.

I have prayed but I have to tell you a story.

My friend’s grandmother wasn’t able to eat or drink and they sent her home from the hospital to die. She hadn’t had anything to eat for days and she hadn’t responded to anyone for about a week. They were giving her water using straws.

My friend got there the day after her birthday and went to her room and started talking to her. She got the water and went to put it in her mouth and her finger slipped off and the water dribbled down her chin and her neck and she said, “Sorry, Grandmommy.” Well, she opened her eyes and said, “That’s okay, everyone else does it too.”

She also knew the day before had been her birthday and wondered if there was any birthday cake, which there was and she wanted some.

She lived another 5 months or so. I did actually see this with my own eyes it isn’t just a story I heard.

That is special! Eating her own b'day cake after days w/o eating or drinking! Thanks for sharing.

she may have had a small stroke causing this.

You can either feed her carefully or put in a feeding tube until it improves.

Most elderly don’t do well on feeding tubes and pull them out, but a small tube into her stomach through the abdomen is a minor procedure that would let you keep her at home.

I should say it is minor, and can be done as an out patient, but in a frail elderly woman, she would probably have it done in the hospital, and you can end up with problems from pain medicine causing confusion and being in a strange hospital can cause confusion too. That’s why we docs usually try to keep the elderly at home.

On the other hand, when people have trouble swallowing, they often develop pneumonia. That is why putting in such a tube might be optional medically. Rose Kennedy had one and lived a few years, but Pope JP2 only lived two weeks after his was put in.

The problem is that if it is severe, you still swallow saliva and get aspiration pneumonia, but if it is mild, you just have trouble swalling well enough to stay nourished.

Sometimes people can swallow semi thick food better than liquids, so there are thickeners you can add to make water and juice slightly thick, like baby food.

An occupational therapist often can evaluate her for swallowing at home and make suggestions. Most larger hospitals have someone who can do this. If it was my mom, I’d try this first.

I’ll keep you all in my prayers.
