Do a quick Google check of the Latin I used in the post.

I would rather have a courageous guy like Archbishop Chaput representing the Catholic Church at the Conventions.

Chaput is the gold standard, but Dolan isn't bad. Believe me, I've lived in Albany, NY (Bishop Howard Hubbard) and in Los Angeles (Cardinal Roger Mahony). Hubbard and Mahony make me appreciate Dolan and understand how much worse he could be.

Well I live in the New York Archdiocese and Cardinal Dolan is no Cardinal O’Connor. You cannot be all things to all people and be called a leader.

Cardinal O'Connor was a saint, but I was there when he first became a Cardinal, and it wasn't easy to be a (practicing) Catholic in NYC during the first few years of O'Connor’s tenure. While his heart was always in the right place, his judgment was terrible. For example, after the Central Park jogger was raped and left for dead, O'Connor personally visited the accused in jail. Dismiss that now as ancient history, but it was very painful at the time for people of all faiths. He also bungled his response to the murder of Jennifer Levin.

O'Connor was, again, a saint, but don't romanticize his tenure. As grateful as I am that we had him, I wouldn't want to live through it again. Give Dolan some time.
