Saturday of the Twenty-first Week in Ordinary Time
Consider your own calling, brothers and sisters.
Not many of you were wise by human standards,
not many were powerful,
not many were of noble birth.
Rather, God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise,
and God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong,
and God chose the lowly and despised of the world,
those who count for nothing,
to reduce to nothing those who are something,
so that no human being might boast before God.
It is due to him that you are in Christ Jesus,
who became for us wisdom from God,
as well as righteousness, sanctification, and redemption,
so that, as it is written,
Whoever boasts, should boast in the Lord.

Blessed the nation whose God is the LORD,
the people he has chosen for his own inheritance.
From heaven the LORD looks down;
he sees all mankind.

Jesus told his disciples this parable:
"A man going on a journey
called in his servants and entrusted his possessions to them.
To one he gave five talents; to another, two; to a third, one--
to each according to his ability.

Immediately the one who received five talents went and traded with them,
and made another five.
Likewise, the one who received two made another two.
But the man who received one went off and dug a hole in the ground
and buried his master's money.
After a long time
the master of those servants came back and settled accounts with them.
The one who had received five talents
came forward bringing the additional five.
He said, 'Master, you gave me five talents.
See, I have made five more.'
His master said to him, 'Well done, my good and faithful servant.
Since you were faithful in small matters,
I will give you great responsibilities.
Come, share your master's joy.'
Then the one who had received two talents also came forward and said,
'Master, you gave me two talents.
See, I have made two more.'
His master said to him, 'Well done, my good and faithful servant.
Since you were faithful in small matters,
I will give you great responsibilities.
Come, share your master's joy.'
Then the one who had received the one talent came forward and said,
'Master, I knew you were a demanding person,
harvesting where you did not plant
and gathering where you did not scatter;
so out of fear I went off and buried your talent in the ground.
Here it is back.'
His master said to him in reply, 'You wicked, lazy servant!
So you knew that I harvest where I did not plant
and gather where I did not scatter?
Should you not then have put my money in the bank
so that I could have got it back with interest on my return?
Now then! Take the talent from him and give it to the one with ten.
For to everyone who has,
more will be given and he will grow rich;
but from the one who has not,
even what he has will be taken away.
And throw this useless servant into the darkness outside,
where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.'"

[26] For consider your call, brethren; not many of you were wise according to

pised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are,

source of your life in Christ Jesus, whom God made our wisdom, our righteous-
ness and sanctification and redemption; [31] therefore, as it is written, “Let him
who boasts, boast of the Lord.”

Commentary:
26-29. As in the case of the Apostles—”You did not choose me, but I chose you’.
(Jn 15:16)—it is the Lord who chooses, who gives each Christian his vocation. St
Paul emphasizes that the initiative lies with God by saying three times that it
was God who chose those Corinthians to be Christians, and he did not base his
choice on human criteria. Human wisdom, power, nobility, these were not what
brought them to the faith—nor the inspirations which God later gives. “God is no
respecter of persons (cf. 2 Chron 19:7; Rom 2:1; Eph 6:9; Col 3:25; etc.)”, St. J.
Escriva reminds us. “When he invites a soul to live a life fully in accordance with
the faith, he does not set store by merits of fortune, nobility, blood or learning.
God’s call precedes all merits [...]. Vocation comes first. God loves us before we
even know how to go toward him, and he places in us the love with which we can
respond to his call” (”Christ Is Passing By”, 33).
Thus, God chooses whomever he wants to, and these first Christians — uneduca-
ted, unimportant, even despised people, in the world’s eyes—will be what he uses
to spread his Church and convert the wise, the strong and the “important”: this
disproportion between resources and results will make it quite clear that God is
responsible for the increase.
However, this does not mean that none of the first Christians was educated or in-
fluential, humanly speaking. The Acts of the Apostles, for example, tell us about
early converts who were out of the ordinary—a minister of the court of the Kan-
dake of Ethiopia; a centurion, Cornelius; Apollos; Dionysius the Areopagite; etc.
“It would appear that worldly excellence is not godly unless God uses it for his
honor. And therefore, although at the beginning they were indeed few, later God
chose many humanly outstanding people for the ministry of preaching. Hence
the gloss which says, ‘If the fisherman had not faithfully led the way, the orator
would not have humbly followed’” (St Thomas Aquinas, “Commentary on 1 Cor,
ad loc.”).
27. St Paul’s words remind us that supernatural resources are the thing an apos-
tle must rely on. It is true that human resources are necessary, and God counts
on them (cf. 1 Cor 3:5-10); but the task God has commended to Christians ex-
ceeds their abilities and can be carried out only with his help. The Second Vati-
can Council reminded priests of this verse when stressing the need for humility;
and what it says can be useful to all Christians: “The divine task for the fulfillment
of which they have been set apart by the Holy Spirit (cf. Acts 13:2) transcends all
human strength and human wisdom; for ‘God chose what is weak in the world to
shame the strong’ (1 Cor 1:27). Therefore the true minister of Christ is conscious
of his own weakness and labors in humility. He tries to discover what is well-
pleasing to God (cf. Eph 5:10) and, bound as it were in the Spirit (cf. Acts 20:22),
he is guided in all things by the will of him who wishes all men to be saved. He is
able to discover and carry out that will in the course of his daily routine by humbly
placing himself at the service of all those who are entrusted to his care by God in
the office that has been committed to him and the variety of events that make up
his life” (”Presbyterorum Ordinis”, 15).
30-31. God’s call makes a person a member of Christ Jesus, through Baptism;
and if a Christian is docile to grace he or she will gradually become so like Christ
as to be able to say with St Paul, “It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives
in me” (Gal 2:20). This “being in Christ Jesus” enables a person to share in the
wisdom, righteousness, sanctification and redemption which Jesus is for the
Christian.
Jesus Christ indeed is the “wisdom” of God (cf. Col 1:15f; Heb 1:2f), and knowing
him is true wisdom, the highest form of wisdom. He is for us our “righteousness”,
because through the merits obtained by his incarnation, death and resurrection
he has made us truly righteous (= just, holy) in God’s sight He is also the source
of all holiness, which consists in fact in identification with Christ. Through him,
who has become “redemption” for us, we have been redeemed from the slavery of
sin. “How well the Apostle orders his ideas: Good has made us wise by rescuing
us from error; and then he has made us just and holy by giving us his spirit”
(Chrysostom, “Hom. on 1 Cor, 5, ad loc.”).
In view of the complete gratuitousness of God’s choice (vv. 25-28) and the im-
mense benefits it brings with it, the conclusion is obvious: “’Deo omni, gloria. All
glory to God.’ It is an emphatic conclusion of our nothingness. He, Jesus, is every-
thing. We, without him, are worth nothing: nothing. Our vainglory would be just
that: vain glory; it would be sacrilegious robbery. There should be no room for
that ‘I’ anywhere” (St. J. Escriva, “The Way”, 780).

Commentary:
14-30. A talent was not any kind of coin but a measure of value worth about fifty
kilos (one hundred pounds) of silver.
In this parable the main message is the need to respond to grace by making a
genuine effort right through one’s life. All the gifts of nature and grace which God
has given us should yield a profit. It does not matter how many gifts we have re-
ceived; what matters is our generosity in putting them to good use.
A person’s Christian calling should not lie hidden and barren: it should be out-
going, apostolic and self-sacrificial. “Don’t lose your effectiveness; instead, tram-
ple on your selfishness. You think your life is for yourself? Your life is for God,
for the good of all men, though your love for our Lord. Your buried talent, dig it
up again! Make it yield” (St. J. Escriva, “Friends of God”, 47).
An ordinary Christian cannot fail to notice that Jesus chose to outline his tea-
ching on response to grace by using the simile of men at work. Here we have a
reminder that the Christian normally lives out his vocation in the context of ordi-
nary, everyday affairs. “There is just one life, made of flesh and spirit. And it is
this life which has to become, in both soul and body, holy and filled with God.
We discover the invisible God in the most visible and material things. There is
no other way. Either we learn to find our Lord in ordinary, everyday life, or else
we shall never find Him” (St. J. Escriva, “Conversations”, 114).

PRAYERS AFTER
HOLY MASS AND COMMUNION
Leonine Prayers
Following are the Prayers after Low Mass which were prescribed by Pope Leo XIII who composed the Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel, and were reinforced by Pope Pius XI and Pope Pius XII to pray for the conversion of Russia. These prayers were in effect until after Vatican II. A decade later Paul VI said, "satan has entered the sanctuary." Could the elimination of these powerful prayers with a ten year indulgence have played a huge part in allowing the devil such easy access? The answer is obvious. Below the normal Leonine Prayers is the longer version of the Prayer to St. Michael, composed by His Excellency Pope Leo XIII to defend against The Great Apostasy.

Complete Prayer to Saint Michael
The following is the longer version of the vital prayer composed by Pope Leo XIII in 1888 after his startling vision as to the future of the Church. This prayer was dedicated for the Feast of St. Michael 1448 years from the date of the election of the first Leo - Pope Saint Leo the Great. Everyone is familiar with the first prayer below which was mandated by His Holiness as part of the Leonine Prayers after Low Mass. After Vatican II, in legion with the devil Giovanni Montini outlawed this necessary prayer and then one wonders how "the smoke of satan" got into the sanctuary? The conciliarists wanted to make sure the words in bold below would never see the light of day again for in it Leo foretold what would happen: The shepherd would be struck, the sheep scattered. Below are both the short and longer versions of this poignant prayer which should never be forgotten.
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray, and do thou, O heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls. Amen.
O glorious Archangel Saint Michael, Prince of the heavenly host, be our defense in the terrible warfare which we carry on against principalities and powers, against the rulers of this world of darkness, spirits of evil. Come to the aid of man, whom God created immortal, made in His own image and likeness, and redeemed at a great price from the tyranny of the devil. Fight this day the battle of our Lord, together with the holy angels, as already thou hast fought the leader of the proud angels, Lucifer, and his apostate host, who were powerless to resist thee, nor was there place for them any longer in heaven. That cruel, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil or Satan who seduces the whole world, was cast into the abyss with his angels. Behold this primeval enemy and slayer of men has taken courage. 1. Sign of the Cross: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
2. The Apostles Creed: I BELIEVE in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. A prophesy about the empty trust that is placed in the temple
The following message came to Jeremiah from the Lord: Stand at the gate of the house of the Lord, and there proclaim this message: Hear the word of the Lord, all you of Judah who enter these gates to worship the Lord!
Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Reform your ways and your deeds, so that I may remain with you in this place. Put not your trust in the deceitful words: This is the temple of the Lord! The temple of the Lord! The temple of the Lord! Only if you thoroughly reform your ways and your deeds; if each of you deals justly with his neighbor; if you no longer oppress the resident alien, the orphan, and the widow; if you no longer shed innocent blood in this place, or follow strange gods to your own harm, will I remain with you in this place, in the land which I gave your fathers long ago and forever.
But here you are, putting your trust in deceitful words to your own loss! Are you to steal and murder, commit adultery and perjury, burn incense to Baal, go after strange gods that you know not, and yet come to stand before me in this house which bears my name, and say: We are safe; we can commit all these abominations again? Do not adorn the church and ignore your afflicted brother
Do you want to honor Christs body? Then do not scorn him in his nakedness, nor honor him here in the church with silken garments while neglecting him outside where he is cold and naked. For he who said: This is my body, and made it so by his words, also said: You saw me hungry and did not feed me, and inasmuch as you did not do it for one of these, the least of my brothers, you did not do it for me. What we do here in the church requires a pure heart, not special garments; what we do outside requires great dedication.
Let us learn, therefore to be men of wisdom and to honor Christ as he desires. For a person being honored finds greatest pleasure in the honor he desires, not in the honor we think best. Peter thought he was honoring Christ when he refused to let him wash his feet; but what Peter wanted was not truly an honor, quite the opposite! Give him the honor prescribed in his law by giving your riches to the poor. For God does not want golden vessels but golden hearts.
Now, in saying this I am not forbidding you to make such gifts; I am only demanding that along with such gifts and before them you give alms. He accepts the former, but he is much more pleased with the latter. In the former, only the giver profits; in the latter, the recipient does too. A gift to the Church may be taken as a form of ostentation, but an alms is pure kindness.
Of what use is it to weigh down Christs table with golden cups, when he himself is dying of hunger? First, fill him when he is hungry; then use the means you have left to adorn his table. Will you have a golden cup made but not give a cup of water? What is the use of providing the table with cloths woven of gold thread, and not providing Christ himself with the clothes he needs? What profit is there in that? Tell me: If you were to see him lacking the necessary food but were to leave him in that state and merely surround his table with gold, would he be grateful to you or rather would he not be angry? What if you were to see him clad in worn-out rags and stiff from the cold, and were to forget about clothing him and instead were to set up golden columns for him, saying that you were doing it in his honor? Would he not think he was being mocked and greatly insulted?
Apply this also to Christ when he comes along the roads as a pilgrim, looking for shelter. You do not take him in as your guest, but you decorate floor and walls and the capitals of the pillars. You provide silver chains for the lamps, but you cannot bear even to look at him as he lies chained in prison. Once again, I am not forbidding you to supply these adornments; I am urging you to provide these other things as well, and indeed to provide them first. No one has ever been accused for not providing ornaments, but for those who neglect their neighbor a hell awaits with an inextinguishable fire and torment in the company of the demons. Do not, therefore, adorn the church and ignore your afflicted brother, for he is the most precious temple of all.

GLOSS. In the foregoing parable is set forth the condemnation of such as have not prepared sufficient oil for themselves, whether by oil is meant the brightness of good works, or inward joy of conscience, or alms paid in money.
CHRYS. This parable is delivered against those who will not assist their neighbors either with money, or words, or in any other way, but hide all that they have.
GREG. The man traveling into a far country is our Redeemer, who ascended into heaven in that flesh which He had taken upon Him. For the proper home of the flesh is the earth, and it, as it were, travels into a foreign country, when it is placed by the Redeemer in heaven.
ORIGEN; He travels, not according to His divine nature, but according to the dispensation of the flesh which He took upon Him. For He who says to His disciples, Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the world; is the Only-Begotten God, who is not circumscribed by bodily form. By saying this, we do not disunite Jesus, but attribute its proper qualities to each constituent substance. We may also explain thus, that the Lord travels in a far country with all those who walk by faith and not by sight. And when we are absent from the body with the Lord, then will He also be with us. Observe that the turn of expression is not thus, I am like, or The Son of Man is like, a man traveling into a far country, because He is represented in the parable as traveling, not as the Son of God, but as man.
JEROME; Calling together the Apostles, He gave them the Gospel doctrine, to one more, to another less, not as of His own bounty or scanting, but as meeting the capacity of the receivers, as the Apostle says, that he fed with milk those that were unable to take solid food. In the five, two, and one talent, we recognize the diversity of gifts wherewith we have been entrusted.
ORIGEN; Whenever you see of those who have received from Christ a dispensation of the oracles of God that some have more and some less; that some have not in comparison of the better sort half an understanding of things; that others have still less; you will perceive the different of those who have all of them received from Christ oracles of God. They to whom five talents were given, and they to whom two, and they to whom one, have divers degrees of capacity, and one could not hold the measure of another; he who received but one having received no mean endowment, for one talent of such a master is a great thing. His proper servants are three, as there are three sorts of those that bear fruit. He that received five talents, is he that is able to raise all the meaning of the Scriptures to their more divine significations; he that has two is he that has been taught carnal doctrine, (for two seems to be a carnal number,) and to the less strong the Master of the household has given one talent.
GREG. Otherwise; The five talents denote the gift of the five senses, that is, the knowledge of things without; the two signify understanding and action, the one talent understanding only.
GLOSS. And straightway took his journey, not changing his place, but leaving them to their own freewill and choice of action.
JEROME; He that had received five talents, that is, having received his bodily senses, he doubled his knowledge of heavenly things, from the creature understanding the Creator, from earthly unearthly, from temporal the eternal.
GREG. There are also some who though they cannot pierce to things inward and mystical, yet for their measure of view of their heavenly country, they teach rightly such things as they can, what they have gathered from things without, and while they keep themselves from wantonness of the flesh, and from ambition of earthly things, and from the delights of the things that are seen, they restrain others also from the same by their admonitions.
ORIGEN; Or, They that have their senses exercised by healthy conversation, both raising themselves to higher knowledge and zealous in teaching others, these have gained other five; because no one can easily have increase of any virtues that are not his own, and without he teaches others what he himself knows, and no more.
HILARY; Or, That servant who received five talents is the people of believers under the Law, who beginning with that, doubled their merit by the right obedience of an evangelic faith.
GREG. Again, there are some who by their understanding and their actions preach to others, and thence gain as it were a twofold profit in such merchandise. This their preaching bestowed upon both sexes is thus a talent doubled.
ORIGEN; Or, gained other two, that is, carnal instruction, and another yet a little higher.
HILARY; Or, the servant to whom two talents were committed is the people of the Gentiles justified by the faith and confession of the Son and of the E ether, confessing our Lord Jesus Christ, to be both God and Man, both Spirit and Flesh. These are the two talents committed to this servant. But as the Jewish people doubled by its belief in the Gospel every Sacrament which it had learned in the Law, (i.e. its five talents,) so this people by its use of its two talents merited understanding and working.
GREG. To hide one's talent in the earth is to devote the ability we have received to worldly business.
ORIGEN; Or otherwise; When you see one who has the power of teaching, and of benefiting souls, hiding this power, though he may have a certain religiousness of life, doubt not of such an one that he has received one talent and hides it in the earth.
HILARY; Or, This servant who has received one talent and hid it in the earth is the people that continue in the Law, who through jealousy of the salvation of the Gentiles hide the talent they have received in the earth. For to hide a talent in the earth is to hide the glory of the new preaching through offense at the Passion of His Body. His coming to reckon with them is the assize of the day of judgment.
ORIGEN; And note here that the servants do not come to the Lord to be judged, but the Lord shall come to them when the time shall be accomplished. After a long time, that is, when He has sent forth such as are fitted to bring about the salvation of souls, and perhaps for this reason it is not easy to find one who is quite fit to pass forthwith out of this life, as is manifest from this, that even the Apostles lived to old age; for example, it was said to Peter, When you shall be old, you shall stretch forth your hand; and Paul says to Philemon, Now as Paul the aged.
CHRYS. Observe also that the Lord does not require the reckoning immediately, that you may learn His long suffering. To me He seems to say this covertly, alluding to the resurrection.
JEROME; After a long time, because there is a long interval between the Savior's ascension and His second coming.
GREG. This lesson from this Gospel warns us to consider whether those who seem to have received more in this world than others, shall not be more severely judged by the Author of the world; the greater the gifts, the greater the reckoning for them. Therefore should every one be humble concerning his talents in proportion as he sees himself tied up with a greater responsibility.
ORIGEN; He who had received five talents comes first with boldness before his Lord.
GREG. And bringing his talents doubled, he is commended by his Lord, and is sent into eternal happiness.
RABAN. Well done is an interjection of joy; the Lord showing us therein the joy with which He invites the servant who labors well to eternal bliss; of which the Prophet speaks, In your presence is fullness of joy.
CHRYS. You good servant, this he means of that goodness which is shown towards our neighbor.
GLOSS. Faithful because he appropriated to himself none of those things which were his lord's.
JEROME; He says, you were faithful in a few things, because all that we have at present though they seem great and many, yet in comparison of the things to come are little and few.
GREG. The faithful servant is set over many things, when having overcome the afflictions of corruption, he joys with eternal joy in that heavenly seat. He is then fully admitted to the joy of his Lord, when taken in to that abiding country, and numbered among the companies of Angels, he has such inward joy for this gift, that there is no room for outward sorrow at his corruption.
JEROME; What greater thing can be given to a faithful servant than to be with his Lord, and to see his Lord's joy?
CHRYS. By this word joy He expresses complete blessedness.
AUG. This will be our perfect joy, than which is none greater, to have fruition of that Divine Trinity in whose image we were made.
JEROME; The servant who of five talents had made ten, and he who of two had made four, are received with equal favor by the Master of the household, who looks not to the largeness of their profit, but to the disposition of their will.
ORIGEN; That He says of both these servants that they came, we must understand of their passing out of this world to Him. And observe that the same was said to them both; he that had less capacity, but that which he had, he exercised after such manner as he ought, shall have no whit less with God than he who has a greater capacity; for all that is required is that whatever a man has from God, he should use it all to the glory of God.
GREG. The servant who would not trade with his talent returns to his Lord with words of excuse.
JEROME; For truly that which is written, To offer excuses excusing sins happened to this servant, so that to slothfulness and idleness was added also the sin of pride. For he who ought to have honestly acknowledged his fault, and to have entreated the Master of the household, on the contrary cavils against him, and avers that he did it with provident design, lest while he sought to make profit he should hazard the capital.
ORIGEN; This servant seems to me to have been one of those who believe, but do not act honestly, concealing their faith, and doing every thing that they may not be known to be Christians. They who are such seem to me to have a fear of God, and to regard Him as austere and implacable. We indeed understand how the Lord reaps where He sowed not, because the righteous man sows in the Spirit, whereof he shall reap life eternal. Also He reaps where He sowed not, and gathers where he scattered not, because He counts as bestowed upon Himself all that is sown among the poor.
JEROME; Also, by this which this servant dared to say, you reap where you sow not, we understand that the Lord accepts the good life of the Gentiles and of the Philosophers.
GREG. But there are many within the Church of whom this servant is a type, who fear to set out on the path of a better life, and yet are not afraid to continue in carnal indolence; they esteem themselves sinners, and therefore tremble to take up the paths of holiness, but fearlessly remain in their own iniquities.
HILARY; Or, By this servant is understood the Jewish people which continues in the Law, and says, I was afraid of you, as through fear of the old commandments abstaining from the exercise of evangelical liberty; and it says, Lo, there is that is yours, as though it had continued in those things which the Lord commanded, when yet it knew that the fruits of righteousness should be reaped there, where the Law bad not been sown, and that there should be gathered from among the Gentiles some who were not scattered of the seed of Abraham.
JEROME; But what he thought would be his excuse is turned into his condemnation. He calls him wicked servant, because he caviled against his Lord; and slothful, because he would not double his talent; condemning his pride in the one, and his idleness in the other.
If you knew me to be hard and austere, and to seek after other men's goods, you should also have known that I exact with the more rigor that is mine own, and should have given my money to the bankers; for the Greek word here means money. The words of the Lord are pure words, silver tried in the fire. The money, or silver, then are the preaching of the Gospel and the heavenly word; which ought to be given to the bankers, that is, either to the other doctors, which the Apostles did when they ordained Priests and Bishops throughout the cities; or to all the believers, who can double the sum and restore it with usury by fulfilling in act what they have learned in word.
GREG. So then we I see as well the peril of the teachers if they withhold the Lord's money, as that of the hearers from whom is exacted with usury that they have e heard, namely, that from what they have heard they should strive to understand that they have not heard.
ORIGEN; The Lord did not allow that He was a hard man as the servant supposed, but He assented to all his other words. But He is indeed hard to those who abuse the mercy of God to suffer themselves to become remiss, and use it not to be converted.
GREG. Let us hear now the sentence by which the Lord condemns the slothful servant, Take away from him the talent, and give it to him that has ten talents.
ORIGEN; The Lord is able by the might of His divinity to take away his ability from the man who is slack to use it, and to give it to him who has improved his own.
GREG. It might seem more seasonable to have given it rather to him who had two, than to him who had five. But as the five talents denote the knowledge of things without, the two understanding and action, he who had the two had more than he who had the five talents; this man with his five talents merited the administration of things without, but was yet without any understanding of things eternal. The one talent therefore, which we say signifies the intellect, ought to be given to him who had administered well the things without which he had received; the same we see happen every day in the Holy Church, that they who administer faithfully things without, are also mighty in the inward understanding.
JEROME; Or, it is given to him who had gained five talents, that we may understand that though the Lord's joy over the labor of each be equal, of him who doubled the five as of him who doubled the two, yet is a greater reward due to him who labored more in the Lord's money.
GREG. Then follows a general sentence, For to every one that has shall be given, and he shall have abundance, but from him that has not, even that which he seems to have shall be taken away. For whoever has charity receives the other gifts also; but whosoever has not charity loses even the gifts which he seemed to have had.
CHRYS. Also he who has the graces of eloquence and of teaching to profit withal, and uses it not, loses that grace; but he who does his endeavor in putting it to use acquires a larger share.
JEROME; Many also who are naturally clever and have sharp wit, if they become neglectful, and by disuse spoil that good they have by nature, these do, in comparison of him who being somewhat dull by nature compensates by industry and painstaking his backwardness, lose their natural gift, and see the reward promised them pass away to others. But it may also be understood thus; To him who has faith, and a right will in the Lord, even if he come in aught short in deed as being man, shall be given by the merciful Judge; but he who has not faith, shall lose even the other virtues which he seems to have naturally. And He says carefully, From Him that has not, shall be taken away even that which he seems to have, for whatever is without faith in Christ ought not to be imputed to him who uses it amiss, but to Him who gives the goods of nature even to a wicked servant.
GREG. Or, Whoever has not charity, loses even those things which he seems to have received.
HILARY; And on those who have the privilege of the Gospels, the honor of the Law is also conferred, but from him who has not the faith of Christ is taken away even that honor which seemed to be his through the Law.
CHRYS. The wicked servant is punished not only by loss of his talent, but by intolerable infliction, and a denunciation in accusation joined therewith.
ORIGEN; Into outer darkness, where is no light, perhaps not even physical light; and where God is not seen, but those who are condemned thereto are condemned as unworthy the contemplation of God. We have also read some one before us expounding this of the darkness of that abyss which is outside the world, as though unworthy of the world, they were cast out into that abyss, where is darkness with none to lighten it.
GREG. And thus for punishment he shall be cast into outer darkness who has of his own free will, fallen into inward darkness.
JEROME; What is weeping and gnashing of teeth we have said above.
CHRYS. Observe that not only he who robs others, or who works evil, is punished with extreme punishment, but he also who does not good works.
GREG. Let him then who has understanding look in that he hold not his peace; let him who has affluence not be dead to mercy; let him who has the art of guiding life communicate its use with his neighbor; and him who has the faculty of eloquence intercede with the rich for the poor. For the very least endowment will be reckoned as a talent entrusted for use.
ORIGEN; If you are offended at this we have said, namely that a man shall be judged if he does not teach others, call to mind the Apostle's words, Woe is to me if I preach not the Gospel.

St. Giles

Giles was born in Athens, Greece, in early times. Since his family was very rich, when his parents died, they left him a large fortune. He used this money to help the poor.
Because of this and especially because he worked many miracles, Giles found that people admired him greatly and that he had become very famous.
He did not want their praise, so to be able to serve God in secret; he left Greece and sailed to France. There he went to live alone in a dark forest. He made his home in a rough cave behind a thick thorn bush.
Giles was happy living there alone praying to God, as he did not want to become proud because people praised him all the time. God was pleased with Giles and even sent him a deer to nourish him with her milk.
Many years later, a king and his men were hunting the forest. They chased the deer that quickly went into Giles' cave, which was hidden behind the large thorn bush. One of the men shot an arrow into the thorn bush, hoping to hit the deer. When they forced their way in, they found Giles sitting wounded by the arrow.
"Who are you and what are you doing here?" demanded the King. St. Giles told them the story of his life and when they heard it, they asked his forgiveness. The king sent his doctors to take care of the saint's wound.
Although Giles begged to be left alone, the king felt such respect for him that he often came to see him. When the King visited, he brought Giles many gifts but Giles would never take any of the gifts.
But finally, Giles agreed to let the king build a large monastery there. Giles became its first abbot (or head priest). This monastery became so famous that a town soon grew up around it and many people from this town joined the monastery.
When the saint died, his grave at the monastery became a great shrine and people came to visit this holy place on pilgrimage.
In Spain shepherds believed that St. Giles was the protector of Rams and Deer and on his feast day, they tied lighted candles to their horns and brought them down the mountains to the chapels and churches to be blessed.

Saturday of the Twenty-First Week of Ordinary Time

God's great work is the creation and redemption of the world wrought through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The one essential work in which we are all callled to participate is God's transforming love.
According to the 1962 Missal of Bl. John XXIII the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, today is the feast of St. Giles who was an abbot of the seventh century. He probably lived in the neighborhood of Beziers on the coast of the Mediterranean. The little monastery of St. Peter, where his body rested, became one of the most popular shrines in Christendom and gave rise to a town. The cult of St. Giles, which was general in France, where there are upwards of one hundred and fifty churches dedicated to him, soon spread throughout the west.
Today is also the commemoration of the Twelve Holy Brothers, martyrs. They were a group of twelve martyrs whose bodies, discovered in various places in Italy, were translated to Benevento towards the middle of the eighth century. Historically today is the feast of St. Anna the prophetess, who along with Simeon was in the temple when Jesus was presented.
St. Giles
According to tradition, St. Giles was born in Athens, Greece, and was of noble extraction. After his parents died, he fled from his fatherland to avoid followers and fame. He went to France, and in a cave in a forest near the mouth of the Rhone he was able to lead the life of a hermit. Legend notes a hind came everyday to his cell and furnished him with milk. One day the King's hunters chased the hind and discovered St. Giles and his secret hermitage. The hunters shot at the hind, but missed and hit Giles' leg with an arrow, which kept him crippled the rest of his life. He then consented to King Theodoric's request of building a monastery (known later as "Saint Gilles du Gard") and he became its first Abbot. He died some eight years later towards 712.
In Normandy, France, women having difficulty becoming pregnant would sleep with a picture or statue of the saint.
In England, churches named for St. Giles were built so that cripples could reach them easily. St. Giles was also considered the chief patron of the poor. In his name charity was granted the most miserable. This is evidenced from the custom that on their passage to Tyburn for execution, convicts were allowed to stop at St. Giles' Hospital where they were presented with a bowl of ale called St. Giles' Bowl, "thereof to drink at their pleasure, as their last refreshment in this life."
St. Giles is included in the list of the fourteen "Auxiliary Saints" or "Holy Helpers." These are a group of saints invoked because they have been efficacious in assisting in trials and sufferings. Each saint has a separate feast or memorial day. The group was collectively venerated on August 8, until the 1969 reform of the Roman calendar, when the feast was dropped.
Patron: Beggars; breastfeeding; hermits; horses; physically disabled; woods; blacksmiths; against lameness; against leprosy; against sterility; against infertility.
Symbols: Hand pierced with arrows; hind pierced with arrows; gold doe, pierced by a silver arrow; Benedictine with crosier, arrow piercing hand, protecting hind.

Twelve Holy Brothers
Honoratus martyred with Arontius, Fortunatus, and Sabinian (c 303), commemorated as the Twelve Holy Brothers during the reign of Emperor Diocletian. The others were Felix, Januarius, Septimus, Repositus, Sator, Vitalis, Donatus, and a second Felix. Probably not related they are known as the Twelve Brothers (in the faith). Four were beheaded in Potenza, Italy, on August 27. Three were beheaded at Vanossa on August 28. The othes were beheaded at Sentiana on September 1. St. Anna
St. Anna was the daughter of Phanuel, tribe of Aser. She married at age fourteen and was widowed at twenty-one. She never departed from the temple and spent night and day fasting and praying. She was in attendance at the Temple when Jesus was presented. Having all her life believed in the prophecies of the Old Testament, she was the only woman in the Temple to greet Jesus.

Well done, my good and faithful servant. (Matthew 25:21)
Its the middle of the day. Your boss comes up and hands you a check for one million dollars. Im going out of town for a few months, he says, but I want you to put this money to work for the company while Im away. Then he turns and walks away. What would you do?
That was the challenge the three servants in Jesus parable faced. And although Jesus included three servants, there are only two categories: those who made money for their master and those who didnt.
Making money requires bold action and the willingness to take risks. For the two successful servants, it meant using what they had been given to make more. They probably thought every day about how to explain their undertakings to the master when he returned. They might failbut they would have tried.
Mother Teresa said: God doesnt require us to succeed; he only requires that we try. How much you do for the Lord isnt as important as that you do something. We will all have account for what we did with Godsgifts, both small and large.
So start today. See if you can identify ways you can turn a profit on your investments. Begin with your relationship with Jesus. Maybe being more faithful to your time of prayer and Scripture reading can bring you greater clarity. Or look to your family relationships to find one or two little ways you can be a source of encouragement and help at home. Or move beyond your family to find ways you can invest in your friendships, in your parish, or in your community.
All three of these areas can become wonderful profit centers if you take just a few small steps toward becoming a better listener, a kinder presence, or a more caring contributor to the common good.
Its not hard to bear fruit for the Master!
Holy Spirit, open my eyes. Help me to see where I can invest in your kingdom today.

The photo shows the interior of the Abbey Church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Paris. It was on the territory of the abbey that Mother Mectilde de Bar found a home for her community in a former house of prostitution in 1651.
Called to Caen
Just when Catherine de Sainte-Mectilde thought she was about to enjoy a respite of stability at Saint-Maur in Paris with her little group of Benedictine refugees from Lorraine, she was asked to take on yet another formidable task. The Benedictine community of Notre-Dame-du-Bon-Secours in Caen was in crisis. The six choir nuns and two lay sisters who composed the community were, to put it plainly, an ignorant lot. The prioress forbade all reading, and judged that one's crucifix could take the place of books. The community was severely dysfunctional.
A Three Year Interval
The secular patron of this sorry monastery, Madame the Marquise of Mouÿ, insisted that Mother Catherine de Sainte-Mectilde accept a three-year term as prioress to restore balance, and peace, and order to the community in Caen; in exchange, she promised financial support for the restoration of the monastery in Rambervillers, to which Catherine de Sainte-Mectilde still belonged by virtue of her Benedictine profession. Mother Bernardine, the prioress of Rambervillers, agreed to the arrangement, provided that Catherine de Sainte-Mectilde give in writing a promise not to forsake the monastery of her profession. When Mother Mectilde (as she was often called, leaving off the first part of her name) arrived at Caen, she found a community that was divided and hostile. With firmness, and with an extraordinary gentleness, she succeeded in winning over even the most recalcitrant old ladies among them. After three years, they did not want to let her go.
Return to Rambervillers and Flight to Paris
On 28 August 1650, Mectilde returned to Rambervillers, the monastery of her profession, hoping to disappear, at last, into the silence and hiddenness of an ordinary Benedictine life. Thanks to the generous financial support of the Marquise de Mouÿ, the house at Rambervillers was flourishing but, before long, the region around it again became a battlefield. The situation was worse than when the Swedes invaded. On 1 March 1651, Mother Mectilde, together with four young Sisters, left for Saint-Maur-des-Fossés in Paris, while six senior nuns remained at Ramerbervillers with Mother Bernardine.

Adoration in a Former House of Prostitution
Mectilde arrived in Paris to find it in the midst of the revolt of the Fronde, and the complexities of the Franco-Spanish War. Louis XIV was on the throne, and the detested Cardinal Mazarin (see image) was his chief minister. Given the civil unrest in the capital, there was no way she and her charges could make their way to Saint-Maur-des-Fossés. They stopped to hear Holy Mass at Saint-Nicholas-des-Champs. There, Madame Butin, a pious parishioner recognized them as religious and offered them hospitality in her own home. A few days later, Mother Mectilde learned that the community of Saint-Maur-des-Fossés had taken refuge in a "hospice" in the rue du Bac of the faubourg Saint-Germain, and joined them there. This "hospice" was nothing other than . . . a former house of prostitution. It was in this house that the Institute of the Benedictines of the Perpetual Adoration of the Most Holy Sacrament would be born. How like God!

Even though I cannot see you, I know through faith that you are present in my life. I hope in your promise to be with me. I love you, and I know you love me. Accept this prayer as a token of my love. Petition: Teach me, Lord, to take all that you have given me and make it produce fruit for your kingdom. 1. Gods Gifts: The Gospel tells us clearly that God distributes his gifts among us as he wills, and he entrusts each one of us with a mission. He gives us what we need to produce fruits for his kingdom, and he expects us to use those gifts responsibly and diligently. No two people are exactly alike, and God treats each one individually as a unique person made in his image. We need to live before God and respond to him sincerely by using to the maximum the talents he has given us. Are we making the best use of all that God has given us, or have we neglected some things and taken others for granted? Might we be committing a sin of omission with regards to some of our talents? 2. Life as a Mission: The servants who invest the talents and make a return on them have understood the purpose of their lives and the time they have at their disposal. These servants were generous with everything their master had given them, making it bear fruit, and they received from him the reward of greater intimacy and more responsibility. Each of us is also given a limited amount of time in life to use our various gifts to give glory to God and help save other souls. We too should work every day to hear those words: Well done, good and faithful servant. 3. The Useless Servant: How often we are paralyzed by fear or false prudence into doing nothing, into trying just to preserve ourselves! Sometimes we dont take Gods gifts seriously or think we have been given very little, and we use that as a rationalization for making no effort or for producing little for God. We blame circumstances or others; but the fact is we are neglecting to produce the fruits God wants. The master didnt expect a return of five talents from the servant to whom he gave only one. He would have been happy with a return of one more, but the lazy servant closed in on his egoism, self-love and laziness. We must resolve to use our God-given talents wisely so as to net him a big return. Conversation with Christ: Lord, give me the grace and love to work for your kingdom with all the talents that you have given me. Let me return them all to you with real fruits for your kingdom. Resolution: I will make a plan for evangelizing other souls and look for fruits of holiness in others.

Paul had received information that factions within the church in Corinth were destroying its unity and interfering with its spiritual development. One faction looked to Apollos, a Gentile convert and preacher, for its inspiration; another professed allegiance to Peter the Apostle. Finally there was one that offered its loyalty to Paul.
Paul points out that no one can boast in oneself. Whatever the Corinthian Christians had accomplished was due to Gods goodness and to the call he issued to them. It was only in God that they could boast. It made no sense therefore, for them to boast in Apollos, in Peter or even in Paul. To put this in the context of todays Gospel parable, we will, hopefully, work hard to develop the talents God has given us, that by using them we might bear witness to Gods glory. We cannot forget that the talents are Gods gifts to us, and our efforts to develop them does not depend on us but on the grace he gives us for this purpose. Today too we can boast only in God.

The Lord calls us to stewardship of every detail in our lives. We are stewards of the money, possessions, time, talents, gifts, opportunities, and relationships which He has entrusted to us. Stewardship is not merely an aspect of our lives; it covers our whole lives. For instance, God expects us to be good stewards of the length of time He intends us to live. If we cut years off of our lives by smoking, drinking, overeating, or worrying, we aren't good stewards. If He has given us a three-bedroom house and/or a finished basement, we should be using these to offer hospitality and to build Christian community. If we have a car, the Lord expects us to use it for His kingdom at least much of the time. For example, try not to come to Church with the back seats of your car empty. Isn't watching TV for a few minutes or an hour often bad stewardship of the time God has given us? Is your marriage being used to further God's kingdom? Are you using your natural and spiritual gifts to the fullest? Have you tried to discover your spiritual gifts? This is also part of good stewardship. The Lord wants to say to you: "Well done! You are an industrious and reliable servant. Since you were dependable in a small matter I will put you in charge of larger affairs. Come, share Your Master's joy!" (Mt 25:21) By faith, accept God's grace to be a good steward always and in all things. |
