Franciscan U of Steubenville Under Investigation for Teaching Homosexuality as Deviant

STEUBENVILLE, OH, September 11, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The national agency which grants accreditation to social work courses is questioning Franciscan University of Steubenville over a course which lists homosexuality as a deviant behavior. Attention was drawn to the course by a group of Franciscan University alumni, identifying themselves as “Franciscan Gay Alumni & Allies”, who are demanding publicly that the university “revise its course descriptions and to stop contributing the culture of hate and ignorance.”

The course is called ‘Deviant Behavior’ and the part of the course description in question states, “The behaviors that are primarily examined are murder, rape, robbery, prostitution, homosexuality, mental illness, and drug use.”

In the press release issued by “Franciscan Gay Alumni & Allies” and published by the Daily Kos, further accusations and demands are made, based solely on the ‘Deviant Behavior’ course description. Among them are the group’s accusation that students are “being taught ideological falsehoods in the classroom,” and that the classification of homosexuality as a deviant behavior “feed(s) cultural biases and promote hatred for lesbian and gay individuals.”

The group goes on to make a broad demand that the university “revise its course descriptions,” “stop contributing the culture of hate and ignorance,” and “conduct an audit of its entire curriculum and remove any information being taught on this subject that is outdated and not substantiated by sound scientific fact.”

Regarding the last demand the group states, “It is about time the University aligns itself with the truth of this matter.”

These are Franciscans, shouldn’t their standard for deviancy be God’s standard? Or do we now define deviancy and morality by the number of people who do it. If enough people steal does it become normal? If they cheat on their taxes do we celebrate it?

Even if Homosexuality infects 100% of the population it will still be deviant by our Creator’s standards.

I am the FReeper that you are referring to. The case has slowed down because special prosecutors have been called in and they essentially must restart the process. This means that if the boys’ statements change at any time they can also be charged with perjury.

Not surprised.

That is the major problem with private schools. They have a vested interest in protecting the cash flow.
Not that public schools are much better in that respect. They will select a different group to protect more often though.

May God give Steubenville officials courage and comfort as they suffer persecution for Jesus Christ with all the saints militant.
Hear from Romans 1 what is God’s word on the matter:

20 ever since the creation of the world, the invisible existence of God and his everlasting power have been clearly seen by the mind’s understanding of created things. And so these people have no excuse:

21 they knew God and yet they did not honour him as God or give thanks to him, but their arguments became futile and their uncomprehending minds were darkened.

22 While they claimed to be wise, in fact they were growing so stupid

23 that they exchanged the glory of the immortal God for an imitation, for the image of a mortal human being, or of birds, or animals, or crawling things.

24 That is why God abandoned them in their inmost cravings to filthy practices of dishonouring their own bodies-

25 because they exchanged God’s truth for a lie and have worshipped and served the creature instead of the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

26 That is why God abandoned them to degrading passions:

27 why their women have exchanged natural intercourse for unnatural practices; and the men, in a similar fashion, too, giving up normal relations with women, are consumed with passion for each other, men doing shameful things with men and receiving in themselves due reward for their perversion.

28 In other words, since they would not consent to acknowledge God, God abandoned them to their unacceptable thoughts and indecent behaviour.

29 And so now they are steeped in all sorts of injustice, rottenness, greed and malice; full of envy, murder, wrangling, treachery and spite,

30 libellers, slanderers, enemies of God, rude, arrogant and boastful, enterprising in evil, rebellious to parents,

31 without brains, honour, love or pity.

32 They are well aware of God’s ordinance: that those who behave like this deserve to die — yet they not only do it, but even applaud others who do the same.

Genesis 19:5 (NIV) 5 They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.”

Leviticus 18:22 (NIV) 22 “‘Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable.

Leviticus 20:13 (NIV) 13 “‘If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.

Romans 1: 21-32 (NIV) 21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles. 24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen. 26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error. 28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. 32 Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

I Corinthians 6:9 (NIV) 9 Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men.

1 Thessalonians 4:3-8 (NIV) 3 It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; 4 that each of you should learn to control your own body [a] in a way that is holy and honorable, 5 not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God; 6 and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister. [b] The Lord will punish all those who commit such sins, as we told you and warned you before. 7 For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. 8 Therefore, anyone who rejects this instruction does not reject a human being but God, the very God who gives you his Holy Spirit.

I Timothy 1:9-10 (NIV) 9 We also know that the law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10 for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine.

... conservatives need to understand both the strategy and argument of those who seek to revise or redefine historic Christian teaching regarding homosexuality. Called “revisionists,” these scholar-activists (1) advance the notion that homosexuality is an issue over which people of good will can differ. (2) Or they claim that there is no “clear answer” to the issue. (3) Then they recommend, under the rubric of “fairness,” that churches appoint task forces to study the issue.

Once the “studies” begin, the (1) revisionists claim that biblical passages that proscribe homosexual acts do not actually refer to homosexuality; (2) they at most only condemn an “abusive” form of homosexuality. Or they may concede that Scripture condemns homosexuality, but then argue that the (3) biblical writers are only reflecting “culturally conditioned” moral beliefs of a pre-scientific culture. As these arguments fail to persuade, (4) a final ploy is an appeal to an overarching theological ethic—such as the presence of “love,” “commitment,” “mutuality,”—that allegedly trumps explicit moral imperatives and justifies homosexual relationships.

I think it’s important to note that according to Ohio news sources, this rape DID NOT occur on the FSU campus and indeed had nothing to do with FSU.

Both of the perps were students at Steubenville (PUBLIC) High School.

Just to be clear, the party and the "student body" trailhkr1 refers to have to do with Steubenville High School, not Franciscan University, so redgolum's comment about "private schools" is a non sequitur.

Steubenville is indeed a tough town, but that's not the University's fault.

In the other thread, the source of the fuss is Stephen Holloway, director of the office of accreditation at the Council on Social Work Education. The course is "Social Work 314", indicating it would be taken by those majoring in Social Work.

Thanks for the clarification, though I have seen similar things happen in upper education.

I went to a Big 8/12 school, and if you were from a “connected” family or good at sports, you could not be touched.

Which is one of the major reasons I no longer enjoy sports anymore.

My son is a senior & a student athlete at Steubenville. I am also pretty familiar with the University to which I think you’re referring. (Maybe has to do with corn, and the color red?). There’s a world of difference between the two.
