Rocco has a bit more info http://whispersintheloggia.blogspot.ca/

In addition to the Pacific move, back East the Pope accepted the resignation of Bishop Matthew Clark of Rochester (left) - long a hero of the church’s progressive wing – who, after a 33-year tenure in the upstate New York diocese, reached the retirement age last July 15th.

As provision for a permanent successor at the helm of the 350,000-member flock remains pending, advance indications tipped that an apostolic administrator was to be named this morning, most likely in the person of the neighboring Bishop Robert Cunningham of Syracuse.

What about Bishop Finn? Is no one calling for his resignation, following his conviction?

Calling for a Bishop's resignation publicly is pointless. Canon Law now ensures that a resignation will be submitted at 75. Otherwise, only the Pope and the Bishop have the power to change arrangements, and unless you are in a position to influence someone who either the Pope or the Bishop is likely to listen to, you are wasting your time talking to anyone outside of prayer on the subject.

Clark is the next-to-last of a group appointed mostly in the 70’s who were appointed very young (sometimes referred to as the “boy bishops”) who were going to be around for a very long time and were, in their day, very influential. Hubbard, the last, is the last functioning Paul VI appointee in the U.S., and when he turns 75 on Oct. 31, 2013, he will have been running (or ruining) Albany for almost 37 years.

Which part is pointless - the "calling for his resignation" part, or the "publicly" part?

Publicly is virtually always pointless. The right person doing so privately to the right people is not pointless-—but the opportunity rarely happens.

December 2013. Perhaps the Mayans were off by one year because his resignation may truly shake the earth ;-)
