I know I’ll be considered simple minded, but, if we evolved from apes, why are there still apes?

The theory goes that Apes can still exist with man because we branched off from a common ancestor into the hominid group roughly 7 million years ago. We continued to evolve based on what we encountered in our environment and through gene mutation.

Don't kill the messenger! And anyone can feel free to fix my botched explanation!
