The Obama administration has forced a small Catholic college to create a girl’s hockey team.
The United States Department of Education Office for Civil Rights ruled that Merrimack College in North Andover, Massachusetts, is “not providing equal opportunity for women to participate in its intercollegiate athletics program” in compliance with Title IX regulations.
The beancounters at OCR determined that while women made up 47.4% of the student body in 2009-2010, they only had 34.8% of the athletic opportunities. “To achieve proportionality in opportunities without decreasing opportunities for male students, the College would have to create 87 new participation opportunities for female athletes,” the OCR concluded.
The OCR letter to Merrimack, dated September 28, is a study in federal intrusion in the affairs of higher education institutions. All to support its allegation of sex discrimination, the letter includes details analyses of Merrimack’s sport teams, percentages of men and women athletes over time, club and intramural sports as compared to varsity athletics, whether or not certain sports participate in the NCAA Division I, financial assistance to athletes, etc.
Moreover, the federal agency has involved itself significantly in Merrimack’s response to the finding of sex discrimination.
In January 2011, the College, reportedly in response to the federal investigation, announced that it would be adding womens golf and crew teams. But the OCR determined that “its impact in terms of athletic opportunities was not significant enough to bring the College into Title IX compliance.”
OCR called Merrimack “aberrational” in that it didn’t have a hockey team for girls and that there were enough high school female hockey teams in the areas to indicate support.
The college, which only has about 1,900 students, has therefore agreed to start recruiting female hockey players next year. It has also agreed to create and fund a women’s water polo team and a swimming and diving team.
If the college fails to achieve 85 percent of the goals set out by the OCS by the 2013-14 season, “it will halt its recruitment for mens tier II and III sports until such time as its recruitment for womens intercollegiate sports reaches at least 85% of the level outlined.”
The nation is being sacrificed at the altar of “fairness”.
Let them play the boys and see what happens.. Why not go all the way with this ‘equality’ crap.
It’s scary when the regime tells a small school what they must do. We’re under a Dictatorship, folks. Four more years?? America is on life support and will be declared officially dead if that happens.
If I was the dean of this college my response would be to shut down the men’s program. And I advise everyone with complaints to contact Rat Party Headquarters to offer their thanks.
The boys are now 6 ft, 160 lbs and she's 5/2 & 110 lbs....
She does cross country now.
Ahhhhhh....life's lessons means you never have to say "I told you so".
So this is how our tax money is being spent. Sad.
This statement puts the lie to the article's title. No one has forced the Catholic College to do anything. The college chooses to place the burden of it's existence on the federal taxpayer, instead of placing the burden on the students, or at least on the Catholic church for running its own school. Title IX states, in part, that
No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance..."He who pays the piper, calls the tune." This college could have easily refused the government's demands, if only the college had the self-discipline to refuse government money.
Title nine is title nine.
Has nothing to do with the president.
To be fair, it was LBJ who began this farce, but Title Nine was signed into law by President Richard Nixon on June 23, 1972.
Nixon was also the enabler of the EPA. And he began the move to hand our economy over to China.
Isn’t it nice that the liberal media gave him so much credit for his liberal accomplishments?
RINOs have not been helpful to our country for a long, long time. They never roll back any of the ground-changing Democrat initiatives, and they often come up with some pretty big ideas themselves—like Bush’s No Child Left Behind, which vastly increased federal involvement in public education.
Even Ronald Reagan was unable to cut federal spending and gave up on it—although he did pass a splendid tax cut. He was also suckered into signing the first illegal alien amnesty (with the promise that it would never happen again).
Yes out of Athletics completely, And ask to become a sister school / annex of Hillsdale College and accept no Federal Funds and or Funds for Tuition supplement from Fedzilla and tell um to shove it....
Title 9 is an Olympic sports disaster but Americans don't care.
actually womens hockey is a more finesse game
and yes they are plenty tuff enuff.
Ah, but Canadian women are great. I’m married to one.
1. To Boeing - “We won’t permit you to open a manufacturing facility in North Carolina...”
2. To Fender -”If you use that wood to make guitars, you should do the manufacturing in Madagascar...”
3. To a Catholic School - “Make an ice-hockey team for your girls...”
THIS IS TOTALLY WEIRD —sounds Cuban or North Korean.
If they let me advise on the recruiting and design the uniforms I can guarantee a money making program. :)
Yeah but the irony is people of the USA actually voted in our dictator.....
The German’s voted in Hitler.
