ROME The Vaticans official newspaper attacked Ridley Scotts Prometheus, taking issue with the films premise about the origins of mankind and saying it is a bad idea to defy the gods.
The film, which opened in Italy Sept. 14, stars Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, and Charlize Theron in a story about a team of explorers seeking to understand the origins of mankind on earth after discovering a series of clues left behind by ancient civilizations.
The science fiction thriller has performed well in a relatively weak box office period in Italy, taking in 1 million ($1.3 million) last weekend, good for second place behind Steven Soderberghs male stripper comedy Magic Mike, which did not generate any complaints from the Vatican.
LOsservatore Romano, the Vaticans official newspaper, said Prometheus mishandles the delicate questions raised by the battle eternal between good and evil in yet another attempt to steak the secret of immortality. The newspaper also said that the journey of Prometheus should instead symbolize the search for the supernatural, referring to the original hero of Greek mythology who is said to have created man from clay.
Scott -- who has earned best director Oscar nominations for Thelma & Louise, Gladiator and Black Hawk Down -- may be best known for sci-fi thriller Alien and 1982s Blade Runner, whose interpretation of what could be seen as a post-apocalyptic future, also turned heads at the Vatican at that time.
The Vatican, which is a spiritual touchstone for the worlds 1.1 billion Catholics, has not been shy about criticizing films it believes include an un-Christian take on Christian issues, such as James Camerons Avatar and The Da Vinci Code, based on the Dan Brown book of the same name and directed by Ron Howard. The language used to criticize Prometheus was more mild than that used in attacking Avatar and The Da Vinci Code.
Bella Addormentata (Dormant Beauty), the euthenasia drama from Italy's Marco Bellocchio that drew critical acclaim at this year's Venice Film Festival, drew fire from Catholic advocacy groups but not from the Vatican itself.
But the Holy See has also endorsed its share of films over the years, including Cecil B. DeMilles The Ten Commandments, Jesus of Nazareth from Franco Zeffirelli, Mel Gibson's The Passion of The Christ, Victor Flemming's Joan of Arc and It's a Wonderful Life from Frank Capra.
In 2010, on the 30th anniversary of the films release, the Vatican attracted headlines by using the term Catholic Classic to describe The Blues Brothers, the John Landis comedy in which Jake and Elwood Blues -- played by John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, respectively -- set out on a series of adventures aimed at raising money for the Catholic orphanage where they grew up, claiming repeatedly that they were on a mission from God.

Sheesh, it was a science FICTION movie which did nothing but recycle the most common and overworked topic in the syfi genre.
There's a whole lot of time we ... and the church ... know nothing about
It’s a movie. A fictional movie. I dont think reasonable people take theological direction from SciFi movies but it’s better than scientology or islam.
If more people would explore the clues left by our Creator, Darwin's work would (ala Copernicus and Galileo) receive the respect it truly deserves.
Darwinists don’t need another “creator”. They’re content with the one they’ve got: their twin gods Time and Chance.

Does the Vatican now subscribes to polytheism? That would be strange, and somewhat unbelievable.

Glad to be of service; sorry about the keyboard, and the ear drums
People took theological direction from Dan Brown’s Davinci Code.
You know this is just a Vatican Newspaper. The Vatican Newspaper does not speak for the Church. It was a movie review written by some guy. They do movie reviews all of the time. Most reviewers thought Prometheus was garbage.Moltke -- also note that the translation is bad.Don't let that stop the Hollywood reporter from publishing a sensationalist article which uses words like "attack" and "Catholic Church" to create some sort of narrative to grab readers attention and make them think that the Pope is pissed off about the movie.
Who translated the L'osservatorre Romano article for the writer of this article? Translations of the article that I have read don't have any of the criticisms mentioned in this article. Perhaps the writer is fabricating or stretching to make a juicy, anti-catholic headline?
It's really sad that no one even thinks to study up On L'osservatorre Romano. They are not the official vatican newspaper. They are a newspaper that reports on events in the Catholic Church. It's like saying the Washington Post is written by President Obama.
Ah - thanks for the clarification. It seemed odd...
My Italian isn’t much more than beginners, but Italian is a simple language to pick up (unlike, say, German or Polish), but the translation was bad. Also it is really irritating when MSM types try to portray L’Oss.. as being dictated by the Curia...
Nice!
