Obama won Catholic vote, regular churchgoers chose Romney

President Barack Obama won a slim majority of votes from self-identified Catholics, according to exit polls conduct by CNN.

The polls shows that 50% of voters who identified themselves as Catholics voted for Obama, and 48% for Republican nominee Mitt Romney. The CNN poll did not distinguish between active and lapsed Catholics.

Protestant voters swung heavily toward Romney, the CNN polls showed, with 57% choosing the Republican and only 42% voting to re-elect Obama. The initial reports on the CNN exit polls did not distinguish among the different Protestant denominations.

Among voters who said they had no religious affiliation, Obama was the overwhelming favorite, with a commanding 70-26% edge.

The CNN exit polls showed a clear preference for Romney (59- 39%) among voters who attended church services weekly, and an even more pronounced tilt toward Obama (62-34%) among those who never attended services.

Hypocrites. My sister is part of the “Nuns on the Bus” crowd. She claims that “man-made rules” needn't be followed.

Should have said the C&E Christians of all denominations. Didn’t mean to set that sentence up as Catholics vs. Christians.

hey, none of us freeper Catholics voted for 0 and 48% of self-identified Catholics didn’t... so take your sarcasm to the DU front where the “liberal Catholics” aka “Yeah I’m Catholic but abort, am gay etc. etc. and don’t care for Church teachings and haven’t attended mass in a decade or more” haunt.

I heard it a bit differently on the radio this morning...

8 out of 10 white Protestants voted for Romney...95% of black Protestants voted for Obama...

6 out of 10 White Catholics voted for Romney...75% of Mexican Catholics voted for Obama...

The abortion issue came up in a previous conversation.

She believes that a woman has the right to do what she wants with her own body and the government has no right to tell her.

She also supports homosexual marriage.

Did I tell her she’s supporting government sponsored abortion?

I should HAVE to point that out to her with the Catholic church’s position on it? This lady is no spring chicken and is very bright. She KNOWS better. She knows the Church’s position.

And my Evangelical co-workers and I DID do that with our practicing Catholic co-workers, and it didn’t faze them. When asked straight out, *How can you vote Democrat when they support abortion?* All we got was, yeah, but *the democrats are for the poor*. Being for the poor trumps murdering babies.

I don’t get it either. I have no idea what kind of mentality can justify it, and these were not stupid people.

Thank you for the post and ping. Those statistics provide a more definitive understanding of both the catholic and protestant votes, especially given what we heard about voter demographics.

Heard it on a Christian radio channel...I’m guessing the main street media doesn’t want those little details to get out...

Nope, you shouldn't have to point out to her the Catholic Church's position. You did the right thing in pointing out to her about abortion

If this lady supports gay marriage and abortion, then God have mercy on her soul

What she supports is not only against Christian Catholic believes but overall Christian beliefs

When asked straight out, *How can you vote Democrat when they support abortion?* All we got was, yeah, but *the democrats are for the poor*. Being for the poor trumps murdering babies. -- thank you for trying at least.

poor doesn't trump murder

I fail to see how one can claim to be for the downtrodden and then take advantage of the most defenseless of all.

Inconceivable how it can be justified.

Ironically, it seems that it’s the babies of the poor that abortion goes after the most, judging by where most of the PP clinics are.

So, for one to say they are a Catholic or Christian has almost no meaning.

THAT is the reason 0bama won and that is why we are facing God’s judgement.

That is also the way it looks to me.

We can blame it on to one church or another but Jesus told us the truth and said that the truth would set us free, we our not in bondage to any religious organization, we can not hide under one of those rocks or mountains.

I get that about none of the FReeper Catholics voting for Obama. My point was we’d all hoped there’d be a groundswell in the Catholic faith against Obama this time around because of the anti-faith mandates within Obamacare.

My attitude’s sh*t, right now, thus that and other comments I’ve made since Tuesday night’s train wreck...

Didn’t intend to slam Catholics in general. My apologies.

*the democrats are for the poor* -- I've met such people and my argument against that, is "really? For the poor? how?

by eliminating the chances for them to get jobs by making it nearly impossible for companies to hire?
by putting so many regulations and additional costs

Don't get me wrong, I support giving poor people opportunities, but it is not an either/or condition. Either pro-poor or anti-abortion. i am anti-abortion and pro-poor. Poor people need to get opportunities to improve themselves. I don't want people starving, but if a person is not challenged, why should he/she get the same lifestyle as someone who works his butt out?"

Furthermore I tell them of 3 cases I personally know -
1. I helped out with Mother Teresa's roses in Bombay and trust me, there are REAL poor people. the poor in the US live lives that middle-class people in the rest of the world live and they get fat on it. I know REAL people and how they just want an opportunity to better themselves and their family. The first case is a poor illiterate father and mother who are Tamils of a low caste. Both are laborers on construction (and in India this means NO safety helmets or anything and they carry mud and bricks on their heads), but they love their two boys and are a truly loving family. We helped teach the boys at CCDTrust (as an aside, to all freepers, this is a cause worth helping) and since then we have sponsored his education. And it costs us practically nothing -- just $200 a year. But this is giving a kid OPPORTUNITY (see next example)

2. While in the US in college I met a blind kid from India (this was in the 90s) -- both his parents were also laborers, in Madras, he was blinded at the age of 8 and had a gaggle of brothers and sisters. At the age of 12 Jesuit priests helped his family and sponsored his education in Jesuit schools and colleges and he got, on his own merit a scholarship to a US Ivy league school. He's brilliant and comes from an unimaginably poor background. I have no doubt that the kid I am honored to help will reach the same. Poor people need opportunities, not hand-outs.

3. Case 3 -- we were helping a poor lady in the east of Poland for the past two years. She's a widow and had 5 kids. Education here is free, but we paid for her heating etc. We were able to do this with the help of a fine priest from Caritas. But recently we found out that she's freeloading -- asking a number of people for money and sitting back with cable tv,fancy ring tones etc. and the kids too, they have no value for money as it comes to them for nothing. The last straw was when she fought with the priest because he asked her to come and collect it from the Church and she didn't want to stand in the queue. Reason given? It was not dignified. This lady is an example of what happens if we just hand out money and not opportunity

NET-NET, the lady is an example of a Democrat voter and one who would benefit from Democrat rule, while the two kids who WORK hard and improve not only their lives, but their parents lives (oh, forgot to add -- that blind kid is now doing pretty well and has brought his entire family out of poverty and they too are working hard and doing well) are people who GOP policies would help

I think this is a pretty good set of examples of REAL pro-poor policies

Well, I as a Catholic am ashamed by these 50% who voted someone so evil and I tell them that. But, all of the Catholics here on FR are anti-Obama, and it hurts us to be called Obamites

Are you suggesting the Republican party should become just like Democrats when it comes to welfare programs, etc.?

My commandments say, "Thou shalt not covet" and that is exactly what those who demand "social justice" are wanting.

Besides, those who can think, know that in the long-term the welfare state cannot endure.

I was arguing on Huffpost that contraceptives in medicare is a stupid idea as they are so cheap one can get it if one really wants and the big argument was “well, if the poor don’t get birth control and abortions, then they will cost the system with ob-gyn costs, right? So it’s a “saving” for the government to give free birth control”....

Sorry, I disagree, they are stupid. Not only are they stupid, they're breaking God's commandments. They covet and they expect politicians to steal for them.

No where does God admonish governments to forcibly steal from those who work and give to those who do not work.

We are admonished to care for the poor but it is voluntary.

Ummm, I don't think that would be a good idea. If someone with no class, manners, or a revolting personality tried to convince me to vote their party, I would likely do the opposite.
