Jefferson was not a Christian believer. In fact, he edited his own copy of the Gospels which removed all the references to miracles and the deity of Christ.
As for the “separation of church and state”, that’s another issue. But it’s really not relevant, as Jefferson wasn’t even in the country when the Constitution was drafted.

His copy of the gospels that you're talking about, were edited to only show the basics. Not because he didn't believe in what was taken out. But because there was a very real problem at the time, that is, taking the Gospel to the savage Indians. He cut it down to the basics to make the task easier. That is all. I've read many of his letters and there's no doubt that he was a Christian. What you're talking about is something that most, almost everyone, has fallen victim to. That is, left wing propaganda. Did you know that he rallied to have money set aside by Congress to send missionaries into Indian territories and even build Catholic churches there? Well, he did.
