Catholic Charities of West Tennessee has joined the "Giving Tuesday" national movement on Nov. 27 by setting a goal of helping 1,300 Memphis-area families during the holiday season.

To that end, Catholic Charities is soliciting gifts and funds to support its annual Gifts For God's Children program, said Michael Allen, president and CEO. Specifically, the organization — which aids people irrespective of religious preference — seeks donations of warm clothing, unwrapped toys, gift cards of $25 or less, nonperishable food items and bicycles and helmets.

People will be asked to drop off any of these items between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, at any of the city's three Homewood Suites. Addresses are 5811 Poplar, 3583 Hacks Cross, and 7855 Wolf River Blvd.

The Gifts For God's Children program served 800 people last year and 300 in 2010.

Those wanting more information about volunteering or donating to Catholic Charities of West Tennessee should call Peggy Stehling at 901-722-4797 or visit

Across the country, more than 1,100 nonprofit organizations are participating in Giving Tuesday.
