PORTLAND, Oregon — Police in Portland say a maximum $1,000 reward has been offered for information leading to an arrest in the case of Italian marble religious statues damaged at a Catholic shrine and botanical garden.

Sgt. Pete Simpson says three statues were damaged this week, with the heads removed.

Police recovered one of the statue heads Friday after a passer-by called to say it was perched on a post at the west end of the 62-acre site popularly known as The Grotto. That head belonged to a statue of the Virgin Mary.

Still missing are heads belonging to statues of St. Joseph and the infant Jesus.

Simpson says the statues are more than 100 years old.

Crime Stoppers is offering the reward.

What irony ... The Grotto's official name is The National Sanctuary of our Sorrowful Mother.

I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for the hate crime charges.

Fortunately, largely as the result of Laszlo Toth's 1972 vandalism of Michelangelo's Pietà, restorers have come up with some pretty innovative means of repairing broken marble by employing mixtures of epoxy resins and marble dust which can fairly convincingly replicate the surface translucense of the original marble. It's a painstaking and expensive process, but fortunately it can be done if they can recover the missing pieces.

This is so disheartening. I loved that shrine and would visit it often. Sorry to say though that it’s not a huge shock, considering Portland, Oregon.

More of Obozo’s Muzzie children feeling empowered after his re-election.

Let me remind you that God is not mocked.

We just visited in September. Very sad to hear this but, as you say, not that surprising. Probably someone’s Portland State Persecution 101 project.

Hardly Muslims. You know nothing about Portland or Muslims, not sure which. Many Muslims actually revere “Miriam”. As someone else pointed out, probably queers, certainly secularists.

How could three statues be decapitated by accident?

This aren’t valuable or rare statues calling for expensive restorations but we would like to have them complete, just the same.

The article said Italian marble over 100 years old. Do you know if they were sculpted in Italy or domestically? Either way, I'm guessing there's a level of workmanship that would be a pretty scarce commodity today.

If it's a relatively clean break, the respective pieces can be drilled and fitted back together with a metal rod. If it's shattered into multiple pieces then it would take a little more extensive work.

Worst case, if larger pieces are missing, there's always the possibility that a section could be carved out from underneath the base and resculpted from photos to match the original.

I’ve meant to visit the Grotto, since my dtr lives down there....no,not unexpected for the hateful, small minded Portland crowd....everyone and everything needs to have protection of course, except the Christians and the whites....

the sad thing is that now we’ll increasingly have to lock up our gardens and parks and trails and boat launches etc so vandals won’t get after them...

Do I know about Portland?

No. And I doubt I would fit in with the Lefties that I understand control much of the government there.

Do I have knowledge about Islam.

Enough.

Search Google for:

“statue beheaded Islam”

Now tell me Hardly.

What other “faith” today beheads, people and statues?

What other “faith” practices “slavery” (check latest on new Government legislation in Egypt)

I do know about Obozo, Liberation Theology, Despotism and the contrast with the history of the US.

It’s still worth a visit I think. The gardens are beautiful and the chapel and grounds would still be peaceful. There’s a memorial too in the gardens above the grotto to Baltic Christians killed by communists of the Soviet variety, perhaps more like the ones at PSU and the rest of Portland than many realize.
