Reflections on Newtown Shooting
pastormatthew ^ | Matthew R. St. John

Three thoughts come to my mind, and if they can help you then please receive them as some contribution to your effort to deal with the unfolding trauma. First, we have to remember that God bears us up right now in the midst of it all. Psalm 68:19 declares, “Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears us up; God is our salvation.” In those simple words I am reminded that our Lord can carry us even today. He is with us and has not forgotten us. Moreover, he alone is our hope.

Secondly, it helps me to remember there is hope beyond the grave. Psalm 23:4 points out that even in Death’s valley, God is with us; we need not fear. Furthermore, as the psalmist points out in Psalm 23:6, he shall dwell with the Lord forever. This, of course, is the great promise for all of us who believe in Christ.

Lastly, I have to cling to the fact that God will deal with the injustices and terrors of our world. Romans 12:19 reminds us that vengeance belongs to the Lord; he will right all wrongs and judge those who inflict pain.

EVIL...that’s what comes to mind.

One cannot stop an individual who’s heart if filled with evil

Yes—one CAN stop an individual who’s heart is filled with evil.

The way you stop a killer with a gun is to have a good guy with a gun in position to shoot the SOB.

I was thinking about why these type of events seem to be happening more frequently.

If somehow we were able to magically remove all firearms from society, would the killers still kill?

When I was a kid , we used to transport .22 rifles on our bicycles to the hills at the edge of town for target practice & no one paid any attention. No one ever got hurt & we never dreamed of committing such acts of violence.

Something has changed. It’s not the guns.

Saying a prayer for the teachers there, they protected so many of those other children. Ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances. I have no other words.

When America started to turn away from God the results we see today were determined. Pray for our country.Pray for these grieving families.

"One cannot stop an individual who’s heart if filled with evil"

Really? When was the last time a lone gunman of some sort walked into a group of politicians and calmly gunned down a dozen or so of them? It doesn't happen, and it doesn't happen because there are always people around to guard our "precious" politicians.

If someone cared about protecting the kids half the teachers and all the administrators would have been both armed and trained in how best to defend the children in their care. Instead, they're unarmed and trained to lead the survivors out to the parking lot and hope the police show up before the gunman reloads and heads their way.

Actions speak louder than words and the actions say, "it's just some kids". We slaughter children by the millions with both abortion and contraceptives so what's the big deal?

At least, that's the way I see it. YMMV

You know what? I’m more sick and tired of the drivel that’s published after events like this than I am of the events themselves.

The ENTIRE COUNTRY is NOT traumatized. Only the people who knew the victims are traumatized.

Events like this should not, and DO NOT, cause most believers to question their faith or their belief in God. It’s stupid for reporters to run to churches and interview “believers” about whether they still believe.

There is nothing we can learn, or do, “to make sure nothing like this ever happens again.” It is going to happen again.

You can’t stop evil but you can mitigate the damage it does. Huddling in corners is not a good idea when evil is intent on mass murder. God rest their souls and bless their loved ones who have to live with this act of evil.

The bottom line is that if someone gets it in their head that they are going to kill you, you’re as good as dead. The demented mind finds a way to make it happen. I could use a gun, bomb, fire, toxin, knife, drown, asphyxiate, or plain old misadventure.

Maybe not today, or tomorrow, but if I got it in my head that I was going to kill you....you would die. You can say to me “bring it punk”, and that’s fine, but like I said...it doesn’t have to be today, tomorrow, next week, or next month. But on the other hand you’re assuming a frontal assault and the method of your demise would be my choice.

You get the point. Gun control is not the answer here. Neither is more security or any other of the myriad of things that will be floated to try to prevent this from happening again.

Evil is just evil, and evil must be addressed at the source.

...and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and deliver us from evil. Amen.

Our culture, our Society have brought forth at east two generations ( and possibly three) that have an abundance of members who have no conscience. If these young murderers ever knew right from wrong, they simply didn’t care about it. It is the conscience that needs to be taught, it is not innate. And belief in The Lord would go a long way in the teaching of it.

You are entirely correct. All this weeping and gnashing of teeth is driven by mass media given over to emoting and the purveying of demogoguery. I thought of this tonight driving home, as I listened to some Fox correspondent on Hugh Hewitt get all teary and starting to blubber up.

I didn't know anyone in Connecticut and I don't miss the perfect strangers who died. I know it really sucks for their families, and I would not want to be in their shoes. But my getting all emotional and sanctimonious about it half a continent away does no good for any of them.

Is it time to ask why so many men seem to be losing it? We look at every other group when a crime is committed (race, religion, political leanings) but never gender. Maybe it’s time to start having that discussion.

I’m no fan of my governor (Conn) Dannel Malloy, but I was very glad to hear him start one of his pressers with what this was. “Evil visited this community today.”

17,000 + Connecticut mothers ended the lives of their unborn children according to the last available figures in 2009.

There was no outrage.

In those days; our culture was still pro-life, and we had not turned our backs on G-d.
