Liberace Movie Too Gay for Hollywood, but Not for San Bernadino

Brokeback Mountain not as funny, says director Soderbergh

In a January 5 New York Post story, movie director, Steven Soderbergh, revealed that his biopic, Beyond the Candelabra, was “too gay” for Hollywood.

“Nobody would make it,” Soderbergh tells the Post. “We went to everybody in town. They all said it was too gay.

“And this is after Brokeback Mountain, by the way, which is not as funny as this movie. I was stunned. It made no sense to any of us.”

The movie is based upon the tell-all book, Beyond the Candelabra by Scott Thorson, entertainer Liberace’s young homosexual lover. It tells about their flamboyant relationship and includes Liberace’s fondness for pornography and teenage gays.

The movie, while alleged to be too gay for Hollywood, was not too gay for the San Bernardino diocese. The diocese made a deal with producer, Jerry Weintraub, to allow the use of Our Lady of Solitude Catholic Church in Palm Springs as a movie set for several days.

It also was not too gay for Father John Kavcak, pastor of Our Lady of Solitude, who played the role of a priest in a scene that depicts the casket of Liberace in church during a funeral Mass.

Gaydar alarming on level 11.....

Especially the flute.

He was indeed a gifted pianist. Not Art Tatum or Horowitz great, but technically polished, Keith Emerson fast, and a terrific arranger.

"I was stunned. It made no sense to any of us.”

The movie [...] tells about their flamboyant relationship and includes Liberace’s fondness for pornography and teenage gays.

You can see how it would be hard for anyone to forsee that this would be considered too gay for mainstream audiences.

A movie about dudes sodomizing each other, dudes prancing about like sissies, and hooking up with teenage boys......yup sounds like a real barrel of laughs.

And 'it made no sense to any of us'......maybe because the average American isn't quite ready to go to a theater so they can pay to see what goes on in a truck stop restroom.

Let me guess on the ticket stub there's a 15% off coupon for for an HIV test?

Here is a great Liberace story for you. A friend of mine in his 80’s told me this.

There was a sold out Liberace concert in Boston many years ago that should have been cancelled due to a massive snow storm. But my friend braved the storm as did a small hand full of people who had tickets.

This huge concert hall was empty save for this small group of people. Liberace comes out, asks everyone to come down to the seats closest to the stage and puts on the entire concert for them. He took time out inbetween sets talked and joked with folks, came down from the stage and spoke with everyone. My pay said it was the greatest concert he has ever been to.

A rather curious guy, Liberace but one hell of a piano player - and a gentleman come to find out.

We had a second guitarist in my Country band for a while, who could do a perfect Liberace! I used to get him to introduce the Rockabilly Punk songs. Hilarious! Drummer did a perfect Elmer Fudd. You should hear “Achy Breaky Heart” all Fudded up!
My Grandma never missed Lee’s TV show, and I was always there that night. I enjoyed his show, even though, as a little kid, I knew something wasn’t right about the guy!

I always liked Liberace. Grew up watching him on TV, playing the piano with such a natural ease it still amazes me. Just last week I pulled up some YouTubes of Liberace just so my son could see how a born entertainer could dazzle on the piano. Liberace was obviously gay, but really, nobody cared. He kept his own business his own business and was certainly no stinking “activist” whose goal was simply to stick a thumb in the eye of normal people. Liberace just loved to entertain. His joy of life was contagious.
