Along with citizens throughout our nation and beyond, I was anguished by the death of the beautiful, innocent children of Sandy Hook Elementary School. In the wake of the shootings, I was gripped first with deep grief and then with a powerful wave of activist energy.
I hoped that this most horrific incident of gun violence would shake the nation from complacency and stir the adoption of sensible gun control legislation. I believed that all over the country, parents of all stripes and persuasions including gun owners would recognize that a civilized nation cannot continue to allow policies that make such unimaginable acts possible. I feared that the calls for gun regulation that filled the airwaves just after the shooting would be drowned out by the next compelling news item.
Several great national leaders have stepped up to lead a national gun reform campaign: Vice President Joe Biden (who has the passion and political expertise), New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg (who has the money), and Sen. Dianne Feinstein (the legislative vantage point), to name a few. Many fine national organizations including a remarkable range of national Jewish organizations have begun sophisticated organizing campaigns. (I urge every reader of j. to sign the petition at http://www.endgunviolencenow.org.)
The general contours of thoughtful violence-prevention policy have begun to emerge. These include legislation limiting access to assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines, effective enforcement of firearm regulations and registration of arms. More complex are questions about how inadequate mental health services contribute, in very small numbers, to gun violence, and a broad conversation about sanctioned violence in news, media, entertainment and sports.
To effect such changes, the president and his congressional allies will need to demonstrate an unstoppable groundswell of support from the American people....

The citizens of the USA already have gun control, it is called the 2nd Amendment.
Kind of like an "affordable care act".
Not to pick overwhelmingly on her religion, but there seem to be a greater than normal mix of a certain religion, in those who seek to control guns.
Did you not learn once?
Stop it.
Another Jew bereft of any sense of history or self-preservation.
Consequently rather than approaching public problems from the standpoint of discovering what might be workable and useful solutions, they watch what the big dogs are saying and run with them.
It's a real waste of first class minds to get caught up into that sort of thing, but there it is.
Problem #1 right there.
Today’s younger generation will live to see their children and grandchildren live in bondage. Hell, all of us may live to see it.
She wants to put Moochelle in charge of confiscating our guns now. Perfect.
We don’t need “sensible gun control” we need “sensible government control.” The 2nd Amendment was intended to provide such a check in the most terrible of exigencies.
“Rabbi Amy”
FIRST red flag.
“...a civilized nation...”
Yes, amy. WE are MOSTLY a civilized nation with the world’s MOST uncivilized enemies, some of whom might be your next door neighbors.
Then again, amy, you are leftist trash so why should I care if YOU enjoy gas showers and hot ovens?
Amy’s brain doesn’t appear to function correctly.
The Germans in 1928 passed “sensible gun control legislation”, so when Hitler was elected in 1933, he did not get a lot of opposition later when he put a lot of people in the railroad box cars , for a trip.
Cor-rect. According to Jewish law, a woman cannot be a rabbi. Therefore, we can safely assume that little Amy-la is a Reform Jew, if indeed she is actually Jewish according to Jewish law. This handily illustrates that we would EXPECT such libby drivel from someone who is both ignorant of Jewish law and chooses to flout its statutes. She reminds me of Sandra Flunk.
“Rabbi Amy”. You could stop reading right there, as you would know she is “Reform” and therefore not a legitimate “rabbi”.
Nice pic. /drool
Need some vehicles to support border vigilance.
Sorry Amy. Your pal Moochelle is highly overrated.
“DO we need greater gun control?”
Probably. I would really not want to have to waste more than one round per thug, civillian criminal or government thug. Always good to have personal goals.
In a well-regulated FReeper den, the right to create and deploy antimatter shall not be infringed.

she has more than 1 problem...
I guess we should work on that gap in the master plan.
I bailed on Physics about 35 years ago; we need an astute theoretician with lab experience to step up and take over the Program.
Volunteers?
Somehow, looking at the gun purchases, I don’t think the “unstoppable groundswell” will go in her direction.
Jealous!!!
I’ve already got mine.
So much for the theory that she has no rabbinical authority because she’s not a man.
Rather we will live to see a second American civil war. It will happen the way things are going.
She must be from one of the more liberal versions of the Jewish faith.
But that is depending on WHAT branch of Jewish faith it is. The liberal branches permit women to be rabbis.
How about we resolve "Crustacean control" first? The woman can't take a trip to an inland Walmart without sending the local lobster population into a frenzied terror.
How about "just no."
The fact that Jewish women are not permitted to be rabbis has nothing to do with assigning women a "second class" status, BTW. Men and women in Judaism are assigned different roles to fulfill all the tasks which need to be done. Jewish women are considered to be on a higher spiritual level from the get-go. They are exempted from time-related mitzvos, such as making it to the synagogue 3x/day for services, because it is assumed that they have child-rearing duties, for example, which would make that difficult. They also do not have to pray with a minyan (quorum of 10 men). It is considered immodest and it is forbidden to touch men who are not your father, husband or son. Likewise, men are not to touch women who are not their mother, wife or daughter. This would make it very difficult therefore to be a rabbi and be among men all day long. Jewish women are also not encouraged to put themselves forward and be a noticeable part of a mixed group, out of modesty. So you can see where being a rabbi would be outside of Jewish law. This woman does not speak for "The Jews", but rather for herself.
Seems to me that the ability to refurbish an unused school in two weeks so that the children in CT can have a school shows remarkable speed. I wasn’t aware there was such a large contingent of construction, electrical, computer and facilities engineers and personnel available in the area, let alone the temporary housing required.
I was also amazed that emergency vehicles could make it through the array of cars strewn everywhere there at the CT school on Dec 14.
If these concepts are sensible, I would like to see the budget for them and their consequences.
Authorize each State's National Guard to offer military grade rifle and pistol marksmanship training at reasonable cost to all peaceable, taxpaying citizens. There are, apparently, several hundred million rifles, pistols, and shotguns owned by the private citizens of these United States. The owners of said firearms need to have the greatest effectiveness in controlling them.
It's for the children ... if better preparedness for self-defense saves even one life, it's worth it.
Impressive
Oh I know well what the left is up to using that terminology, and when you control the media you can get that terminology in widespread use.
Obliviously anybody who disagrees with them is insensible and unreasonable. /sarc
OK ... I’m suggesting that we turn their rhetoric against them, and that we take the offensive in this war of words and ideas. Yes, we must oppose whatever insanity they’re puking up at the moment. We must also propose and advance our own agenda of liberty and self reliance. It’s not enough just to argue about whether the latest repressive outrage from the left is a good idea or not. We MUST turn the conversation toward what increases in personal freedom should be enacted first. This strategy has proven successful in the several States.
Well said...
