Pro-Life Events Across Nation Mark 40th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade

Written by

On January 22, 1973 the U.S. Supreme Court issued its infamous Roe v. Wade decision that effectively granted women the right to “terminate” a pregnancy, thus condemning, at last count, over 50 million pre-born babies to death. One year later, on January 22, 1974, pioneering pro-life leader Nellie Gray launched the first March for Life rally that brought 20,000 pro-life activists together on the steps of the U.S. Capitol to pray, protest, and plan for the overturning of the horrific High Court mandate.

On January 25, 40 years after the Roe v. Wade decision, and four days after the inauguration of the nation's most pro-abortion president, this year's observance will convene in communities across the nation as hundreds of thousands of Americans repent for the national sin of abortion and pray for its cessation.

The keynote event, of course, will be the Washington, D.C., March for Life, where rally organizers expect a record crowd that may even eclipse the numbers attending Obama's inauguration. While the president's 2009 inauguration drew some 1.8 million attendees, that number is expected to dip to 600,000 this year. By contrast, there are signs that the numbers for this years Walk for Life rally will far outreach the 400,000 that attended in 2011.

Organizers told the Washington Examiner that one indication that the crowd will dwarf's Obama's event is the number of rooms booked for the pro-life rally. Hotels pre-booked for the March for Life participants “sold out a month ago,” reported the Examiner, “while many Washington hotels report lukewarm interest for rooms during the Inauguration. In 2009, hotels sold out months in advance as an excited nation readied to welcome the first black president.”

Jeanne Monahan, who took over as the director of the March for Life effort after founder Gray's death last year at 88, told the Washington Post that there is an emphasis on reaching a new generation of Americans, many of whom who are more pro-life in their attitudes than their parents. “We’re winning with young people and we’re winning with the American public,” Monahan told the Post, noting that a recent Gallup poll shows a record-low 41 percent of Americans identify themselves as “pro-choice.” Monahan also pointed to victories at the state level, noting that “more pro-life legislation has passed in the states than ever in the history of our country.”

Monahan said that unlike the hours-long rallies of past years, which sometimes included up to 50 speakers, this year's D.C. event will be much more youth-focused, with the actual rally cut down to about an hour, spotlighting a handful of speakers “who are actually steeped in the issue,” and with speeches that “tap into all the cutting-edge pro-life issues”. She added that the goal is to “do a good job of commemorating the unique 55 million lives that we’ve lost in the last four decades, but at the same time, capturing the enthusiasm of the march and young people.”

The rally on the National Mall, which will run from 12 noon until 1:30 p.m., will be followed immediately by the annual march, which will take the pro-life crowd up Constitution Avenue to the Supreme Court building for a short prayer service.

Meanwhile, on January 26, thousands of miles across the United States in San Francisco, tens of thousands of pro-life activists will participate in the ninth annual West Coast Walk for Life, which drew some 40,000 walkers last year.

Nearly a week earlier, on January 19, one of the largest pro-life events outside Washington, D.C. was scheduled in Dallas, where Catholic Bishop Kevin Farrell was to lead a special mass and rally for the unborn commemorating the infamous 40th anniversary of legalized abortion. “The theme of the 2013 Roe memorial events is Exodus 20:13,” Farrell explained of the event. “The Book of Exodus reminds us of the 40-year journey of God’s people through the desert to the Promised Land, and the verse Exodus 20:13 states none other than God’s Fifth Commandment, ‘Thou Shalt Not Kill’ — a most fitting reminder from almighty God in the year 2013, the 40th year of the legalized killing of the unborn, that life is sacred and must be protected and that the killing must end.”

Farrell said that as in past years, the Dallas event would bring together thousands of individuals “to witness to the city of Dallas our unwavering devotion to continue these efforts, to leave behind us the desert of abortion, usher in its ‘exodus’ from our community and embrace the promise of life!”

January 19 also witnessed a large gathering in San Diego to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. The Rev. Jim Garlow, a San Diego area pastor and a scheduled speaker for the San Diego pro-life event, predicted that history “will be hard on pro-abortionists, just as it is hard on those who were pro-slavery. Why? Because they were morally wrong.” Challenging Christians to step forward to be champions for the unborn, Garlow said that just as there are “tours in Germany of the concentration camps, of the killing centers, someday there will be tours of the abortuaries in America, the present day killing centers. And tourists will ask, 'where was the church? Why were people silent?' I do not want them to be referring to me. I will not be silent.”

As hundreds of thousands of pro-life advocates gather in state capitals and communities across the nation to pray for an end to abortion, the Illinois-based Pro-Life Action League will be sponsoring a January 22 nationwide prayer service to remember the over 55 million pre-born victims of abortion. Eric Scheidler, executive director of the pro-life group, explained that the “Blessed Are They Who Mourn” prayer vigil will take place on Roe anniversary at hundreds of memorial sites across the nation, including dozens of locations where tiny victims of abortion have been buried. Individuals are encouraged to visit one of the sites on the anniversary, “and offer prayers of mourning for all the unborn babies who have been killed by abortionists since 1973,” said Scheidler.

Scheidler noted that over the past several weeks the nation has rightly been mourning the tragic deaths of the children at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. “Now we're calling on our nation to reflect on the profound loss of all the millions of children aborted since 1973, and mourn for them, too,” he said — “children whose names and faces will never be on the evening news, but whose lives were just as precious.”

“...quote from Anonymous. “Abortion saves humans from hell”...

Extremely poor theology from Anonymous. Abortion might save them from the depths of hell i.e., spending eternity in Satan’s presence because they have no chance to sin, HOWEVER - it does not permit them to be in the presence of the Beatific Vision (with God in the inner circle of heaven) because they are not baptized. It is considered old fashioned to call it limbo, however only the baptized make it into the presence of God. There is a place of natural happiness reserved for aborted babies, unless somehow God permits them a baptism of desire automatically, which is possible. Either way, Anonymous has chosen a chilling position.

My area is actually the DC area.

They are calling for significant snowfall here on Friday actually. It would be great if it doesn’t affect the turnout but I fear it might.

We are located on the Ohio River, in a little town bordering the OH/WV border. Tomorrow morning, at 5 am, at least 40 people from our area (mostly Catholic, but a few other Christians as well) will be boarding a bus at our parish and heading to D.C. For the first time, I will be one of those people (my 14 y.o. daughter is also coming, as her dad and I thought it would be a great experience for her and some good mom/daughter bonding time). I turn 40 on February 10th, so the significance of this year does not escape me at all.

We are prepped for the weather, with our heavy coats, thermal underwear (LOL), gloves, you name it. The weather may slow us down, but it won’t keep us away!

Pray for all those travelling for this event. Please also keep in prayer my husband, who will be taking care of our 10, 8, and 5 year olds here at home, LOL. God bless him for taking off work to give my daughter and me this opportunity.

Wonderful! I’ll keep you two in prayer.

Definitely bundle up and mentally prepare for some bitterly cold weather. It’s already quite cold here and with snow too it will feel like the arctic I’d imagine.

It has been pretty cold here the last few days, and we are also expecting snow on Friday here. We’ll be ready (I hope)!

Our parish is St. Louis IX of Gallipolis, OH. We’re with the Diocese of Steubenville.

Have a great time, I’m going too. The FReepers used to meet a certain location at the national mall. Now the march has been shortened and located in a different place. I used to stand there and freeze while listening to all the speeches, now I do things differently, I arrive later, attend mass at a church in DC, by the time mass is over and I walk to the march, it’s about to start, the march is over in an hour, so it shouldn’t be that bad. I dvr the march for life on ewtn and listen to the speeches and interviews the next day at home where it’s warm.

I hope you can meet up. It’s always so wonderful to meet other FReepers. Safe traveling prayers for all of you from St. Christopher.

On the 40th Aniversary of Roe, I have a big dream taking shape. Dream with me.

By: Msgr. Charles Pope

It’s late January in Washington DC. It is the (dreadful) 40th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade A little snow, and surely a chill.

But this time every year is also marked by the warmth of tens of thousands who come to DC for the March for Life. I have marched just about every year, except when I was sick or away from the city.

My favorite year was 1985. There was record cold that year. The day before had featured the second inauguration of President Ronald Reagan. However, the temperature for that inauguration morning was -4 Degrees Fahrenheit. Thus the swearing in moved inside the Capitol and the parade was cancelled. The next day was just as cold, and the snow was knee high, but the Pro-life March went off any way. We walked through the bitter cold and snow in testimony to life. The numbers were down but our spirits were high (and our pace was swift!).

Most years have escaped such bitter conditions but its nice to know that many of us march anyway even in the worst weather.

But on this 40th March for life, I must say, I have longed for us to take a fresh look at the march. And while I hope it never comes, I have wondered if we could not perhaps do something powerfully memorable for the 50th Anniversary. Again, I hope that year never comes and that Roe v. Wade will be gone before then. But, I think that what I dream of is going to take about ten years to plan.

I also say this planning may be necessary since this 40th year kinda of caught us off guard. I remember last year being in a couple nationwide conversations to consider what we should do for this 4oth year of the march, (such a biblical number). But honestly we got to work too late and then Mrs. Nellie Gray died mid year (may she rest in peace).

That’s why I say, it may not be too early to start planing now for 2023 and my dream will take some planning. And my dream is born on something of yearning to really ramp up the March.

Regarding the March now, consider that we barely make the news anymore here in DC. And it’s always the same: the media says we have 30-70,000 and the March for life committee estimates over 100,000. Likewise the media always gives equal billing to the dozen or so counter-demonstrators that show up.

Another, more frustrating aspect is that every year the political speeches get longer and longer and the march starts later and later. What once began 1:00pm now often slips to as late as 2:30pm. 90% of the marchers can’t even hear the speeches anyway. Someone tells me that this will be different this year, we’ll see. I realize there is a political dimension to the march but frustrations do rise as we stand for a long period, often in poor and frigid conditions.

I am not sure exactly what to do on a yearly basis to move the march back into the headlines but I do have a dream that we would pick the year 2023, the 50th year of the March, and really pull all the stops to give Washington a March they’d never forget. Here are the aspects of my dream:

  1. There are 78 million Catholics in this country according to recent Pew and Gallup Polls. If only 10% of them agreed to come to DC, that would be 7 million people filling the mall, the reflecting pool, the tidal basin area and even across the river to the Pentagon. Now I know that only 25% of Catholics really practice their faith in any meaningful way by coming to Church. But that’s still 19.5 million and if only 10% of them came we’d still have almost 2 million people here.
  2. Now how to get that many to come? Well, what if we invited the Pope to lead us? In thirty-eight years of marching have we ever invited the Pope to personally summon us and promise to stand with us?
  3. Bring the Pope! And bring with him other religious leaders. If our numbers did swell past 2 million I doubt we could actually march, but I can see the Pope and other religious leaders on the steps of the US Capitol standing at the head of two to three million people lamenting the legality of infanticide (aka abortion) and warning our nation that God’s justice cannot forever wait. Then I see him turn toward the Capitol, staff in hand and millions behind him. (Think of Moses before the Red Sea, staff in hand). And I hear the Pope in prophetic tones calling legislators to conversion, and insisting that the life must be respected. Insisting that it is shameful that the richest and most powerful land in this world cannot find the political courage and the moral fiber to end abortion, that the best it can offer women who face challenges in accepting life is a trip to the abortionist.
  4. The speech would have to be very carefully developed because in my dream this speech would need to rank right up there with Dr. Martin Luther King’s Speech in 1963. That was a speech full of hope to be sure but also a speech that indicated no compromise with injustice and insisted that America live up to its vision and do what was right. Not in some distant future, but today.
  5. Turnout goals – In the years and months leading up to the rally every Bishop would have goals to meet in terms of catechesis and turnout. Likewise every pastor. Dioceses closer to DC would have higher turnout goals, but every diocese would have to meet turnout goals and be publicly accountable.
  6. With this sort of turnout and the presence of the Pope we’d give Washington a March they’d never forget.

I realize that our present Pope (may he live forever) is up in years and that in ten tears we may have another in his post. But the point here is, let’s dream big! Let’s break all records! One for the books. Let justice roll down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream (Amos 5:24). Even if it takes years to plan, lets do it.

Do you have dream? Do you have ideas about the Pro-life March? How can we turn up the volume and wake the sleeping nation?

Nella Fantasia – In my dream….
