A recent Loop item noted that outgoing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, despite a record number of countries visited, was the only secretary in many years not to visit the Vatican except for Warren Christopher.
We were relying on the official records compiled by the State Department historians office.
But some former top aides to Christopher insist the records are wrong, and they are pretty sure they were at the Vatican with President Clinton, Christopher and Pope John Paul II.
Well, lets see.
The historians records say Christopher accompanied President Clinton to meetings with Prime Minister Berlusconi, President Scalfaro, and senior Italian officials. He was in Rome and in the resort town of Nettuno in June 1994, the record says.
No mention of the Vatican or the Pope.

Didn't want St. Peter's to cave in on her.
Worried she might heave green slime on the Holy Father?
She loves Saul Alinsky, they guy who dedicated his book to Satan. It’s no wonder she wouldn’t go to the Vatican.
With this administration, she’s probably a muslim convert.
It’s deliberate. They are not bumbling idiots. They know what they are doing. When 0 sent $50 thousand to the earthquake victims in Italy, he knew what he was doing. He HATES Catholics, and so does his arch-enemy Hillary.
Did she do ONE positive thing during her tenure? Any accomplishments? If so, I can't recall.
This certainly does seem odd indeed. One would think there are many rugs and carpets at the Vatican, but I could be wrong.
She probably couldn’t bear the sight of all the crosses...
She is also the first Secretary of State since the Carter Era to loose an Ambassador to murder by terrorists.
But at this point...’what does it matter?!’
“Hillary Clinton Only Secretary Since Nixon Years to Skip the Vatican”
Didn’t want to turn into a pillar of salt.
And was afraid of somehow coming in contact with Holy Water. You know, now that I think of it, have you ever seen a picture of here with her reflection in a mirror?
After asking who painted St. Juan Diego’s tilma with the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, maybe she was afraid of making a similar gaaffe at the Vatican.
But perhaps her “living in darkness” would have been a threat to those whom she met there.
Hill obviously needs a lot of prayers.
Perhaps The Vatican requested that she not visit. Those rugs and carpets are all acquired by donations from the faithful, and held in trust. A good trustee does seek to protect the property in his care ...
A church with flying buttresses doesn’t need one huge Flying Buttress in its midst.
I know, that’s unkind. How about Jabba the Butt?
