Coffee and sandwich chain Pret A Manger has withdrawn its 'Virgin Mary' brand of crisps after a flurry of religious complaints.
The coffee-shop made the costly decision to pull the brand after campaigners on the Protect the Pope website pointed out the offensive crisps branding to its members.
Responding to the complaints, the religious website says Pret a Manger has 'apologised for any unintentional offence they have caused and have indicted that they will give any unsold crisps to the homeless'.
Posting on the website, Deacon Nick Donnelly, says: 'Clive Schlee (Pret CEO) has admitted to a reader of Protect the Pope that taking this brand of crisps off their shelves will cost them quite a bit of money but "good businesses listen and react quickly".
One Protect the Pope member, named Mel, says: 'I just got a voice message of the CEO Clive Schlee saying they are removing the Virgin Mary after listening to customers, I rang him earlier after reading the comments on here. If Clive keeps his words, then indeed this is a victory for the Church Militant. All thanks and praise to Jesus.'
The catholic website was set up in the run up to Pope Benedicts state visit to the UK in September 2010 'as a direct response to the unprecedented level of hostility, ridicule and ill-will from certain public figures, sections of the press and blogs against the Holy Father and the Catholic Church,' it says on the site.
'Weve been passive for too long in the face of mockery of our faith and discrimination against us as Catholics. We can change things!'

Don't you mean "Bloody Mary"? The spicy tomato flavored cocktail is named after Mary, Queen of Scots, not the Lord's Mother.
I just wonder what thought process made the connection between Mary and a salty snack in the first place.
I’m picturing a psychologist administering a word association test to him.
Up? - Down.
White? - Black.
Potato chip? - The Virgin Mary.
FWIW, a "Virgin Mary" is the name for the same spicy-tomato-flavored cocktail, served without the alcohol.
They may want to go to the Vatican and have a chat with all the vendors selling pope bobble heads and Jesus & Mary trinkets of all types.
They were just trying to make a play on the drink. Most people don’t know the origin, they just probably thought it was a funny pun that would sell some crisps.
It can happen.
I know the origins of the cocktails name but I would never have made that connection.
Up? - down.
Black? - white.
Potato chip? - cocktail.
How about Moca Mohammed, a Specca of Mecca, a cup of Ally Akbar, and all those other great flavors.
“Bloody Mary” was not Mary, Queen of Scots, but Mary I, who ruled England from 1553 to 1558. She got her nickname for putting to death many protestants as she sought to return England to Catholicism.
On the other hand, I had a professor of international relations--one of the nation's top experts in nuclear weapons who held prominent positions in the Nixon and Ford administrations--who was notorious for his skill at concocting "leukemic" Bloody Marys. They contained a larger than normal amount of vodka, which made them pink.
I thought the origin of the name was from the bartender at the “Bucket of Blood” bar in Chicago who invented the drink. (no joke, old gangster bar and brother from the mob heyday)
I guess you can call this a minor victory, but it isn’t worth much when you think of “piss Christ” “dung Mary” “chocolate Jesus, Christians being burned alive in churches, etc etc.
What, she complained?
I guess they won’t be selling “Mohammed” brand pork skins either.
You'll get no answer if you don't ping me to the question.
