Same-Sex Wedding Cake Refusal Could Cost Christian Baker
EWTN ^ | 2/5/13

Posted on 02/05/2013 9:14:39 AM PST by marshmallow

The Oregon state attorney general's office is investigating a Christian baker who declined to make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple.

Aaron Klein, owner of the Gresham, Ore. bakery Sweet Cakes by Melissa, told The Oregonian newspaper he chose not to make the cake because he believes marriage is “a religious institution between a man and woman as stated in the Bible.”

“When someone tells me that their definition is something different, I strongly disagree. I don’t think I should be penalized for that.”

His business, which he co-owns with his wife, could face as much as $50,000 in fines if found guilty of violating the Oregon Equality Act. The law forbids businesses from denying “full and equal accommodations” for customers on the basis of sexual orientation and other protected categories.

Same-sex “marriage” is not recognized in the state, though domestic partnerships are.

The woman who filed the complaint against the bakery said Klein said she and her partner were “abominations to the Lord” and that their money was not equal to others. Klein denied making those statements.

“I apologized for wasting their time and said we don’t do same-sex marriages,” he told the ABC television affiliate KATU. “I honestly did not mean to hurt anybody, didn’t mean to make anybody upset,” he said.

The couple had previously bought a wedding cake at the store several years before for one of the women’s mothers and her husband.

It wuld have been so easy for these Dykes to just order a wedding cake and go somewehere else and get their Two Dykes little statues and put on it.

Fruits don’t want to do that. They want to rub your face in it.

This guy has a good defense in that he refused to sell a cake for a homosexual event rather than refusing to sell to a homo. His point is that he will sell to anyone, homos included, but will not promote an event which opposes his Christian beliefs. Thus, he is not discriminating against any individual based on their sexuality.

They want to rub your face in it.

It's the continuous attempt at normalization of homosexuality. It's the minority's attempt to continuously drum the idea of same sex copulation as normal.

My proposal has been to push for the normalization of open carry. Homosexuality is an aberration and a genetic mistake. Protection of oneself with a firearm has been de rigeur for centuries and only recently demonized as "evil."

To do business in Oregon you play by Oregon rules..... I suggest moving your soon to be fined business to a state where equality is defined differently than in goofy Washington, goofier Oregon or goofiest California...
Cake baking has gotten so controversial....

This guy never had to say why he refused. He has every right to refuse service to any person for any reason. The clamlickers, however, did not have any "right" to know any reasoning or rationale for the refusal.

This could definitely cost him.

More specifically, it could cost him a lot of his free time filling all the new orders he is going to get from people like me who are sick of this kind of bullying. But at least his cash register will be full.

On a related point, I read about a restaurant last year that said they would no longer serve children. I have a three year-old. Know what? I’m fine with this restaurant’s decision. Plenty of restaurants will serve my whole family. Many even cater to families. I don’t need to start bullying the ones that don’t. It’s a free country, or at least supposed to be.

Refuse to make the cake. Refuse to pay the fines. Close the business and reopen under another name if necessary. Go to jail if that’s what it takes. Fighting the good fight has never been easy. And it’s going to get a lot harder before it’s over.

Take whatever consolation you can from the fact that you are staying true to God.

These people need osur prayers and support. If I were in Oreegon I would definitely put in a standing order for cakes on all occasions. And a victory cake if they win.

The tough decision is which flavor to order.

Excellent point, Cowboy Bob.

What about churches... I admit I'm not sure how church weddings and gay marriage work these days. In gay states like mine - The People's Republik of Connecticut - do gays have the right to force any or most churches to marry them in a "church wedding" ceremony? (I'm pretty sure Catholic churches, and probably Orthodox Jewish temples will refuse to marry all same-sex couples)

“If I go to a Muslim butcher and ask for pork chops, and he doesn’t sell them to me...can I sue?”

No, as I would assume neither a Halal butcher or Kosher butcher would have pork in their shops.

Therefore, no one could buy pork chops.

No discrimination would be taking place.

The guy should have said he doesn’t provides goods or service for religious celebrations that are against his own faith, but that he could refer them to a business partner that handles those occasions.

therefore they get to have their cake and munch it too, and he has “accommodated” them

“The Oregon Constitution protects Religious “opinion”.”

Maybe the lawyer that the baker hires and pays $25,000.00 will be able to navigate that argument in a courtroom, but it will be tricky as the law and cited in the article is clear.

Secondly, the baker states on his website that he will make a cake for “any occasion.”

It is a tough case for the baker to make and it is going to cost him a lot of dough to make is case.

You’re right in that this should be a clear case of the 1st Amendment right to free speech and association, but this is just another “unintended consequence” of Lyndon Johnson’s Civil Rights Act, which opened the door to exactly this kind of persecution.

Equating the gay rights movement with the civil rights movement is an insult.

Race is a characteristic that has no bearing on ones’ character, sexuality is a behavior that does drive behavior.

First, if you don't like this guy's pov, then don't go to his bakery. Are you telling me you couldn't get your cake someplace else?

Second, I am really getting disgusted by these bullies. They begin by saying they want tolerance, now we are at absolute acceptance, and nothing else; and, they will sic the law on you to make you, not just accept, but celebrate them.

I used to never think about homosexual people. They did their thing, I did my thing -- no big deal. Now, they have made me have to think about what I really think about them; and, guess what -- I don't like them. They are bullies.

And no one is forcing the baker to sell cakes. He could in fact stop selling cakes. Not sell cakes for birthdays, not sell cakes for weddings, not sell cakes to anyone for anything and he could not be sued and the state could not fine him.

OK, but was this the only cake maker in town? It's Oregon -- it's full of transplanted California people... I find it hard to believe the lesbians couldn't find someone else to make their cake. I lean toward believing they wanted this brouhaha to make their point.

And that is the problem. There are all the California people and all the liberals in Portland and along the Oregon coast and they have elected a legislature that passes such laws.

Unfortunately, I do not see so called “non discriminatory” laws being repealed or being overturned by a court.

Why the double standard?

The baker has a right to be a Christian, whether you like it or not. Just because he exercises his right to make and sell wedding cakes doesn’t give you the right to force him to sell sodomy cakes.

As an intercessor, I will pray for them every day that they meet Jesus, and come to see the error of their ways. And I DO have the ear of God.

When is this bullying ever going to end? It is disgusting beyond belief!
