Police in a Utah town dominated by one of the largest polygamous sects in the U.S. have been stopping women from leaving, according to a top lawman.

Arizona's attorney general Tom Horne yesterday announced a criminal probe of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS) and the Marshal's Office, which serves as a small police force in the twin polygamous towns of Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Arizona.

During a news conference held in Phoenix, Mr Horne also announced that a 26-year-old woman had been granted temporary custody of her six children and had fled the town of Colorado City, the home base of the FLDS.

He said she was forced by by its jailed leader Warren Jeffs to marry her brother-in-law at the age of 14, and had since been virtually held captive in the town on the Utah-Arizona border, along with many other women who want to leave.

'What they do is say, "Everybody watch her so she won't run away". Then she can't leave,' Horne said.

'Women who wanted to escape have been forcibly held by the marshals against their will.'...

Domestic hostages, if you will.

To be perfectly fair, this article is highly misleading.

When the term “Mormon” is used, it generally references the LDS of Salt Lake.

The FLDS are indeed “fundamentalist” Mormons, but don’t have much more in common with the LDS than the People’s Temple have with “other” Christians.

The Peoples’ Temple massacre shouldn’t have been reported as the doings of Christians, and this shouldn’t be reported, without further explanation, as the doings of Mormons.

It also isn’t news. It’s been widely known for decades that the cops in Short Creek put obedience to the Prophet before obedience to the laws of man.

Isn’t the FLDS a large and widespread denomination of Mormonism?

I believe it is the largest denomination outside of the Salt lake portion.

To be perfectly fair, I don’t think that comparing it People’s Temple, or them to Christianity is fair, for one thing the FLDS are truer to Mormonism, they aren’t like the Jim Jones cult was to whatever he claimed.

Theologically the Flds have a LOT in common with the LDS.

Sociologically the Flds have a LOT in common with where Mormons were up into the early part of the 20th century.

Remember, 'twas 1945 before the Lds had a "prophet" who wasn't a polygamist!

I’ve been to Colorado City. Toured the town. It is a genuinely creepy place. Like one of those cornfield towns in a Stephen King book without the cornfield.

ME !!! ME !!! ME !!!

I know the answer !!!

OK

‘What they do is say, “Everybody watch her so she won’t run away”. Then she can’t leave,’ Horne said.

Horne could have been talking about Salt Lake and Utah Territory under Brigham Young...

Now ya know...

It is news to me. At it's about time, this news is making it that it IS more widely known. Thanks Colofornian.

This is horrible and what a LIE to say having so many wives is from God. And they are not Christian. Satan is the master of liars.

This afternoon a young man in a pickup truck stopped by looking for work. He looked perfectly normal, introduced himself as Levi. It was a nice truck, a four door model. Soon at least ten little kids started streaming out of the truck followed by three very plain hair braided women in long dresses. Poor souls....

Joseph Smith was a sexual predator. Bringem Young was also a pervert. The entire "religion" was a scam devised to justify the sexual perversions of its founders.

FLDS members openly engage in plural marriages. Most LDS members are not open about their plural marriages; they are closet bigamists.

The Daily Mail doesn’t know the difference between a Mormon and a hangman. When are we going to understand that the DM is written by the usual gang of idiots.

The Romneys immigrated from England to personally serve their prophet.

I have it as 1842, we’ll if that is corrected, I have seen more than one date given.

This article is from January this year.
Because it is a news story just one month old, even if people have hear reports for years does not make the information invalid.
flds follow the original teachings of Joseph Smith, it is the current SLC lds that do not.
The flds who have called themselves mormons since their foundation, have the same or greater claim to the word mormon than SLC lds.

FLDS is generally considered to have around 10,000 members. That’s a good deal fewer than will fit in many of the new church buildings. I wouldn’t consider that either large or widespread.

I agree that the FLDS is closer in many ways to the original Smith and Brigham version of Mormonism.

Most LDS members are not open about their plural marriages; they are closet bigamists.

How's that work? There are at least 2x as many LDS women as men?

I am not even vaguely an apologist for Mormonism, but I do believe in accuracy. And referring to the FLDS' extremist activity as "Mormon" without further explanation is unfair.

BTW, there are few Christian groups who come out spotless if we are going to start dredging up old evil practices. Admittedly the Mormon (LDS) misdeeds are more recent than most, but most Christian have engaged in atrocities and persecution or are descended from groups that did.

That is enough to fill many churches, many, scattered in several states and 2 different nations.

By Mormon standards, that is probably the second largest denomination.

LOL, you may not be good at it, but you definitely seem to put your heart and soul towards it.
