IRONDALE, Alabama - Viewers watching EWTN Global Catholic Network for the first time might be tickled by the sight of a grandmotherly nun dishing out quips and biblical advice.
Mother Angelica, who founded EWTN in the garage of the Our Lady of the Angels Monastery in Irondale in 1981, has been a mainstay on the network throughout its history. But the Mother Angelica Live! programs now airing were taped years ago.
The taped shows, several hundred of them, still air regularly on the network as ''Mother Angelica Classics.''
She hasnt hosted any TV shows since a stroke rendered her mostly incapable of speech.
She suffered her second major stroke on Christmas Eve 2001. That left her with partial paralysis and impaired speech.
Shes actually doing well; shes in great spirits, said EWTN President Michael Warsaw. She continues to be bedridden. Shes hanging in there. Shes tough.
Mother Angelica will turn 90 on April 20. She has a nun assigned to her personal care at the Our Lady of the Angels Monastery Farm near Hanceville in Cullman County.

Wow! First thing I see today is about Mother Angelica. I love her. Glad it’s just an update.
I thought she had died.
Went to her little monastery in AL some years ago, and she was just as feisty and peppery as ever. The priests who were there then are a lot grayer now, but I’m glad to see things haven’t changed too much. I was thinking of Mother A earlier this week, and wondering how she’s doing. She’s a powerful presence for traditional Catholics. I wish her very well. XOXOXOXOXO, Mother A!
Isn’t that wild? I was thinking of her again recently. And to see this pop up! My sister also loved her, God rest her.
Watch her (even though they are repeats) almost every day.
In the many Catholic schools I attended as a child, I was blessed to have a few nuns like her. Full of American freedom ideals an no nonsense, moral and ethical truth about human life.
You could not ask for more.
