Pope Benedict's Address on Resignation of the See of Rome
Zenit ^ | Vatican City, February 11, 2013 (Zenit.org). | 5 hits | His Holiness the Pope

Dear Brothers,

I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only for the three canonizations, but also to communicate to you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church. After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry. I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering. However, in today’s world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me. For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.

Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects. And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new Supreme Pontiff. With regard to myself, I wish to also devotedly serve the Holy Church of God in the future through a life dedicated to prayer.

From the Vatican, 10 February 2013

BENEDICTUS PP XVI

If the next Pope is Peter of Rome will he be the last pope?

God the Father of Mercies: please choose for us a new Pope. May he be steadfast in the face of evil. May he be the Rock that the gates of hell cannot withstand.

+ We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. Amen. +

Lord Jesus Christ,

Preserve Thy Church glorious, not having spot or wrinkle, holy, and without blemish. Give us Thy Vicar strong in the face of advancing forces of death. Confuse and defeat Thy enemies and lead us to unity with all who love Thee. Break down the gates of hell and lead us to liberty and convert the doubting brethren to Thy heart.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, in the company of Saint Peter and all Thy Holy Apostles we pray. Amen.

“Oh, he is such a good man.”

“Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good...”

This, I believe is a stupid superstition not to be believed more than Nostradamus or the History Channel.

This pope made the Church stronger and his successor will make her stronger still. I expect the work of purification and unification of authentic Christians to continue in the Church.

Now if this was a modern business in the United State, someone would escort him to his cubicle, let him box up his personal stuff, and escort him to the door. Meanwhile IT changes his password and disables his login.

He is good. Pope Benedict will be remembered by generations to come as one who reversed the destructive work done insidiously in the Church. Rightly he mentions the need for strength as soon, I believe, we shall see civil societies fall to paganism and the Church remaining the only organization capable of holding the Christian civilization together. I also believe that the next pope will continue the consolidation of authentic Christianity around the See of Rome. Glory be to God.

This kind of heartlessness only shows that the United States has lost its ability to lead the world and the Church has preserved it.

That is an arid reduction. Here is the whole exchange.

And behold one came and said to him: Good master, what good shall I do that I may have life everlasting?

Who said to him: Why asketh thou me concerning good? One is good, God. But if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

Was Jesus declaring that He himself was not good? Obviously not.

Was he declaring that we can't call anything good? No. Otherwise we can't say that Reagan was a good president, or that the Raptor is a good warplane.

Jesus was indicating that we cannot do some good and enter into heaven on the strength of that good.

He was also declaring that we must seek God the Father, the source of all good and that we must obey the commandments to gain Him.

And He was also indicating that He, Himself was God. Why asketh thou me concerning good? One is good, God.. He wasn't saying the man was wrong to ask Him - he was indicating the truth about Himself.

Hope this is helpful.

I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter

The title uses the word "resignation". The text uses the word "renounce". Is this notification a translation into English? I prefer the "resign" word to the "renounce" word due to the secondary meaning of renounce.

re·nounce

[ ri nównss ]

1.give up claim: to give up formally a claim, title, position, or right

2.reject belief: to reject or disavow a belief or theory

3.stop doing something: to give up a habit, pursuit, or practice

res·ig·na·tion

[ rèzzig náysh'n ]

1.notification of leaving job: a formal notification of leaving a paid or unpaid position

2.departure from job: an instance of leaving a paid or unpaid position

3.unprotesting acceptance of something: agreement to something, usually given reluctantly but without protest

Dunno what's the exact translation.
