I resent being accused of not being a “true” Christian.

This is a harsh and unnecessarily divisive posting.

In Defense of the Papacy: 9 Reasons True Christians Follow the Pope

Is it just me or does this headline come across as rather arrogant? I consider myself a true Christian and I don't follow the pope.

The word “Pope” appears exactly zero times in the Bible. Just sayin’.

Whe the Apostle Peter comes back to Earth I’ll acknowledge him as Pope. Until then no man is “infallible” on any subject imaginable.

Period.

Your religion is Christianity. Your denomination is Roman Catholic.

A protestant at the prom....don't even think about it.

But I believe in the goodness of the church "in general" and the binding that it does do. If the Pope can be part of that force....I'm in. The intentions are right.

Nope, not just you. It's typical of the arrogance displayed by some who claim to follow the "one true church." They belittle and demean others in the name of "love" all the while bastardizing the word "love."

Personally, I'm just glad I won't be in their shoes come judgement day. I have enough of my own sin covered in Jesus' blood that I don't need to take on anyone else's.

A> Elevating of a “POPE” is against the 2nd Commandment.
B> Salvation is by faith that Jesus was sent to be our Savior from our sins and if believe this, we are saved.
Following a “POPE” does not help our Salvation.
C> The Bible says that we are all equal. So, we don’t need Popes or Cardinals to worship and kiss.
D> The thief on the cross was not a Catholic. Yet Jesus said he was going to Paradise.
E> Job was not Catholic yet he said he would see the Redeemer in the flesh one day.
F> Jesus was not Catholic yet he was perfect.

This is a harsh and unnecessarily divisive posting

As a former Protestant now Catholic, I'm inclined to agree. One can make their case for the papacy without stating that other followers of Christ who disagree aren't "true" or real Christians. I didn't bother reading the article because Catholicism doesn't teach that our separated brethren aren't "true Christians." Any Catholic tempted to doubt this can refer to paragraphs 817-819 of the catechism.

From 818: [O]ne cannot charge with the sin of the separation those who at present are born into these communities [that resulted from such separation] and in them are brought up in the faith of Christ, and the Catholic Church accepts them with respect and affection as brothers....All who have been justified by faith in Baptism are incorporated into Christ; they therefore have a right to be called Christians, and with good reason are accepted as brothers in the Lord by the children of the Catholic Church.

Peace be with you.

there can omly be one true curch.....not 20,000 denominations....just one, and it must be Biblical and must date, without interruption, from Jesus to the present.....only the Catholic church fills that requirement.

Absolutely...anything else is heresy.

I am surprised someone didn't syncretistically inject The Holy Mother ahead of Jesus.

Is the Holy Mother important? Yes, of course. Is the Pope an important figure? Yes, of course.

Is Jesus/Yeshuah our savior?

Yes! Of course!

Is Yeshuah/God Almighty the One to whom we owe our eternal allegiance? Yes, of course!

Perhaps it's because Catholics worship the Most Holy Trinity in union with the saints. Not in addition to the saints.

One might think that inlight of the sick and twisted sexual scandals that were/are widespread in this same church - and that its leaders covered them up while further endangering children...

...and the current widespread (apparently) homosexual problems just revealed - that some now believe may be a large reason your current pope is resigning...

That you’d take time to clean house before you castigate Christians who trust and follow The Lord and Savior of all Christians.

Thank you for saying so. I agree and have stated it many times. Just since Free Republic came back online yesterday, the Religion Forum was bombarded with Catholic Church-related threads as if these poor souls had nowhere else to turn to get their daily "fixes". All the daily threads usually posted STILL got posted for the days lost during downtime! For someone new coming here it would appear that Free Republic is an extension of the Vatican. It would be nice if threads that were in the RF could actually BE related to current events that have a religious "flavor", as this was the main reason why the category was created in the first place - a way for those who had no interest in religious discussions could avoid even seeing them.

As it stands, they have been allowed to continue to dominate the forum and attempts by others to dispute their conclusions are usually met with snark, scorn, condemnation and hostility. Threads such as this one are prime examples of PROVOCATION of non-Catholics and it would be nice if those who continue to post them - often the SAME ones year after year as if nobody had ever answered them - could refrain in the interest of what is best for Free Republic and not as tools of condescension and adversity. I don't imagine it will stop or slow down, do you? I wonder how much $$$, collectively, this one group contributes monthly to FR?

I guess you have not read today's Gospel where Christ does name Peter as the head of the Apostles and gives him the Keys of the Kingdom as well as power to bind and unbid sins.

Gospel Mt 16:13-19

When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi
he asked his disciples,
“Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”
They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah,
still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
Simon Peter said in reply,
“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah.
For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.
And so I say to you, you are Peter,
and upon this rock I will build my Church,
and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.
I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of heaven.
Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven;
and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

great post!!! I played devil's advocate all the time, in my Catholic High school and with our "group" at each other's homes...great fun!...the Nuns running things thought that I was GREAT and I did my job well. There never was a time when protestants and others could not be heard. If our arguements were not satisfactory....they win! HOWEVER..our arguements are always right. Christ created ONE true church and it happens to be the Catholic church. There is absolutely no doubt about that!

there was NEVER an arguement that other denominations weren't Christian....just that Catholicism was the ONLY complete Christian religion.

I graduated high school in 1957 (Catholic Memorial High in Waukesha, Wis) and there were indeed non-Catholics at our prom....noone asked the religion of our dates!

the Most Holy Trinity in union with the saints

And peace be with you also...but doesn't this spread our worship elsewhere, dilute our worship of the Lord.

If our minds and heart are not directed at Him and Him alone...aren't we diluting our worship.

He wants a direct and personal relationship with you...not via intermediaries standing between the Two of you.

Isn't this what you want? Don't you hear His voice.

Of course, his mother is the holiest woman who ever lived...of course the Pope is trying hard to lead the Church forward to Him.

But in the end...isn't it just between you and Him?

For something so important as to who would lead the church after Jesus’ ascension, why does it only appear in one gospel? I think Paul would beg to differ as well.
