Why they REALLY Made the Golden Calf
Chabad.org ^ | 2/10/12 | Rabbi Mendel Kaplan

Posted on 02/25/2013 9:02:12 PM PST by Phinneous

Link is to an audio class on understanding the sin of the golden calf. How the heck could people who heard G-d speak 40 days prior do such a sin?!

The sin of the golden calf takes place within the weekly portion (as divided by Jews) of the Torah that is read this week.

Enjoy!

I thought the reason they built a golden calf was because the Jews were stingy and wouldn’t fork over enough gold to build a whole cow.

I hope you take comment #3 in the way I meant it. It is to provide a little levity and promote some conversation on the subject, which is actually very interesting.

Thanks for posting this thread.

It was because of Aaron’s poor leadership.
Today’s teachings of false
doctrines in so many churches are a direct reflection of this.
We a humans and we sin

This is such a bum rap against the Israelites! Even Aaron said that it ‘just crawled out of the fire’. How could anyone think the first High Priest lied? /sar

Thank you so very much for this link.

While I do a lot of reading from Chabad’s website, I pretty much avoid video/audio lessons. Not from their site in particular, just in a general sense. That’s because no matter the topic, I inadvertantly disengage after a minute or so and can’t maintain focus.

But this topic was especially intriguing, so I clicked anyway. This rabbi’s lesson was so engaging that I was completely engrossed for the entire hour +. He has a talent for making his side topics and tangents so interesting that I wasn’t impatiently waiting for him to “get to the point”. He then tied every one of his tangents into his summary and conclusion. Now *that’s* the kind of speaker I can listen to 24/7. And I will be spending as much time as I am able catching up with his lessons.

There is much I could comment about the lesson, but where to start? I’ll just say that his brief remarks at the end drew to mind words from the derailed’s own sources, that witness to the truth of Rabbi Kaplan’s comments.

Thanks again.

Let me take Aaron’s statement a little further. What if the golden calf that emerged from the pot was self forming and animated (at least initially), that would certainly trick the nervous people into worshiping it. Was that an opening the devil took advantage of?

Actually, the excuse "it jumped out of the fire" was Aaron's flimsy excuse for making it and leading the children of Israel astray.

Moses response was to grind the calf to powder, added water, and made them drink it.

For the real problem was, that they had seen 10 plagues on Egypt, been delivered out of Egypt through the waters, been given water and food (6 days out of 7) in the desert, a cloud to follow by day and a pillar of fire by night, and yet with all this, they quickly turned to a false idol.

The sin of Jeroboam, son of Nebat, was to erect two golden calves for the Northern tribes to sacrifice at, rather than the temple in Jerusalem. In essence, repeating the offense of the golden calf before Gd.

For this the northern tribes eventually had to back to slavery in Egypt. The southern tribes succumbed later to idolatry and human sacrifice and were taken to Babylon. It is a picture of the Total Depravity of Man, that man will sink to the lowest state that Gd permits.

The amazing thing was that both the Northern and Southern tribes were returned. Those who came back from Egypt did not learn their lesson and continued as Samaritans. Those who came back from Babylon, restored Jerusalem and the temple and continue, yet after being exiled once again, to this day.

As it says in the Scriptures, "I will have mercy upon whom I will have mercy, and compassion upon whom I will have compassion".

Repentance and returning to Gd is essential. In our day, we are turning to the golden calf of self. Pregnant women to Combat, the Marriage of Gys in the military, making us pay for the blood of the unborn - all these point to the fact that the golden calf is among us once again.

And human sacrifice is right around the corner unless we Repent as a nation and turn back to the Lord our Gd.

You obviously either didn't watch the video, or else got nothing out of it.

There is so much more to the Torah than just what is written on the surface.

The Israelites copied the worship of the calf from the Egyptians, who worshiped the god “Hapi” under the form of a male calf.
This in turn was copied from the Babylonians, who used the bull as a symbol of Nimrod. Not only was a bull chosen
because it symbolized might and strength, the Chaldee word
for “bull” also carried a double meaning. Nimrod as a king
was a ruler of the people, and the name for “ruler” is “Tur,” that also means “bull” in Chaldee. Thus the bull
was chosen to symbolize Nimrod in his worship.

That’s also a great explanation Dave Tesla. But the innermost (Chassidic translation of the “real” reason) is that weeks earlier at the giving of the Torah, the Jews saw a figure of the face of an ox on the angels carrying G-ds throne. They thought—good enough for G-d....good enough for us! And no human frailties! (they were disappointed that Moses chose (seemingly to them) to stay in heaven rather than come back and lead.

Abortion is horrendous, but when religious human sacrifice begins the blood will flow off the mountains again and it won’t be just the unborn, it will start with children and the elderly and work it’s way to include just about anybody as the fear religions of old come back to haunt.

The ‘Devil’ (called the Satan, ‘the one who causes to stray’ in Hebrew,) enhanced the possibility to sin (the free choice) that G-d had orchestrated. In the beginning of the class he quotes a famous teaching in Judaism that the Satan showed everyone a vision of Moses’ funeral.... they needed a new leader! But that’s only one level. On a deeper level, they saw a vision of the calf (ox) already on G-d’s own ‘throne,’ (see vision of Ezikiel Chapter 1) at the giving of the Torah on Mt. Sinai. Hmmm...a godly animal with good credentials—and now human frailty (like Moses, seemingly) to leave the flock in the dust and ascend to heaven.

The truth lies in Ezekiel, Exodus and Kings 1.....

The Golden Calf
During the many years that the Israelites were in Egypt,
it is evident that they worshiped the Babylon idols.

Ezekiel 20
4 “Will you judge them? Will you judge them, son of man?then confront them with the detestable practices of their
ancestors

5 and say to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: On the day I chose Israel, I swore with uplifted hand to
the descendants of Jacob and revealed myself to them in Egypt. With uplifted hand I said to them, “I am the Lord
your God.”

6 On that day I swore to them that I would bring them out of Egypt into a land I had searched out for them, a land flowing with milk and honey, the most beautiful of all lands.

7 And I said to them, “Each of you, get rid of the vile images you have set your eyes on, and do not defile
yourselves with the idols of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.”

8 “‘But they rebelled against me and would not listen to me; they did not get rid of the vile images they had set their eyes on, nor did they forsake the idols of Egypt".

It is no wonder that they returned to the idols the moment they thought Moses might not return to them. They insisted
that Aaron make them a golden calf.

Exodus 32
5. So when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it. And Aaron made a proclamation and said, “Tomorrow is a feast to the LORD.”

6 Then they rose early on the next day, offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.
Not only did they bring their sacrifices to the rising sun, but also the idol was golden, the color of the sun.

After the death of Solomon, king Jeroboam caused Israel sin by worshiping two golden calves he had made.

1 Kings 12
28. So on the advice of his counselors, the king had two gold calf-idols made and told the people, “It's too much trouble to go to Jerusalem to worship; from now on these will be your gods-they rescued you from your
captivity in Egypt!”

Israel Rebels Against God
The Golden Calf (aka Nimrod, Moloch)

Acts 37
“This is that Moses who said to the children of Israel,
‘The LORD your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me
from your brethren. Him you shall hear.’

38
“This is he who was in the congregation in the wilderness
with the Angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with
our fathers, the one who received the living oracles to
give to us,

39
whom our fathers would not obey, but rejected. And in their
hearts they turned back to Egypt,

40
saying to Aaron, ‘Make us gods to go before us; as for this
Moses who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we do not
know what has become of him.’

41
And they made a calf in those days, offered sacrifices to the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.

42
Then God turned and gave them up to worship the host of
heaven, as it is written in the book of the Prophets:
‘Did you offer Me slaughtered animals and sacrifices during forty years in the wilderness,O house of Israel?

43
You also took up the tabernacle of Moloch, And the star of
your god Remphan,Images which you made to worship;
And I will carry you away beyond Babylon.’

http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/articles/7907-host-of-heaven

The “host of heaven” is mentioned as the recipient of idolatrous veneration (Deut. iv. 19, xvii. 3; II Kings xvii. 16, xxi. 3, 5; xxiii. 4; Jer. viii. 2, xix. 13; Zeph. i. 5). The express mention of sun, moon, and stars as forming the “host of heaven” in this connection leaves no doubt that astral bodies and their cult are referred to. Sidereal worship was practised among the Canaanites, as many old names of cities (e.g., Jericho = “moon city”) indicate, and the astral character of the Assyro-Babylonian religion is well authenticated. The cult of the “host of heaven” was in favor among the Hebrews, but whether in imitation of the customs of their neighbors or as expressing their own original polytheistic religion (as suggested by Hommel) remains a matter for conjecture. Certain kings are mentioned as especially devoted to this form of idolatry (e.g., Manasseh and Ahaz; II Kings xxiii. 3, 5, 12). It is an open question whether (Jer. vii. 18, xliv. 17-19, 25) should be read “queen of heaven” or “kingdom of heaven.” If the latter reading be accepted, “host of heaven” is synonymous; and even if the pointing indicating “queen of heaven” is preferred, the phrase throws light on the connotations of the other phrase (Stade’s “Zeitschrift,” vi. 123 et seq., 289 et seq.; Schrader “Sitzungsberichte der Berliner Akademie,” 1886, pp. 477-491; “Zeit, für Assyr.” iii. 353-364, iv. 74-76).

We don’t disagree....yours are rational reasons why the Jews returned to worship a calf... and yes they were steeped in Egyptian idol worship. However the deeper meaning in Jewish thought seeks the innermost reasons for the Jews’ actions in Torah (and Prophets and Writings.) The inner reason is that they saw an ox on G-d’s throne. Jewish teaching finds the virtuous (or attempted virtue) end to the means.
