In the Ukrainian language wormwood literally means "chernobyl".
That was the place where a number reactor burned down, spreading radiation for hundreds of miles around that spot. [This nuclear reactor was located in the Ukraine.]
Also of interest is that there was not a word for nuclear radiation at the time of Jesus Christ and the Twelve Apostles.
So it is possible that that Angel of Wormwood refers to nuclear fallout/radiation. The book of Revelation refers to streams, rivers and lakes being contaminated by wormwood. [That does not make sense -- that a tree/plant would contaminate rivers/streasm/lakes.]
