A few days ago Cardinal Meisner was speculating that it would be good for a man as young as 45 to be Pope. The youngest Cardinal happens to be 55 and formerly an Auxiliary Bishop in the Cardinal's Archdiocese of Cologne. Step forward Cardinal Woelki (55), seen above at his introduction to the See of Berlin, at which none other than Cardinal Meisner preached. Cardinal Marx of Munich is also to be seen concelebrating. It is not too much a leap to see the hand of Cardinal Meisner in the early promotion and indeed the red hat for Cardinal Woelki.

Unlikely there will be consecutive Popes from Germany? No Italian pontiff for decades; my guess is an Italian. Don’t think the European power brokers are ready for a Pope from the Southern Cone.

It could be anybody. An Italian? Sure, maybe Schola. But then again, it could be Erdo from Hungary. We just don’t know.
Yup...this conclave is giving me massive anxiety. Not that I don’t think the Church will survive whoever’s elected- it has through 2000+ years through some pretty bad popes- but the Church and whole world could really use some steadfast moral leadership right now, and this thing just seems wide open.
The Italians had a good run, but highly unlikely.
With the Church having gone global do not be surprised that a canidate could very well come from outside Italy.
