Every once in a while, we hear a false charge. A charge that has significance during this Lenten season of 2013.
It's an old lie that seems to keep resurfacing. The accusation is that supposedly there is no historical reliability to Jesus as a person.
In other words, we supposedly can't know for sure that He even existed historically.
That is so false. For example, Will Durant, the great historian who wrote the series, "The Story of Civilization," noted in the volume, "Caesar and Christ," that if the same criterion by which some philosophers claim Jesus didn't really exist as an historical person, then by that same criterion we'd have to throw out all sorts of historical figures, such as Hammurabi or King David.
Will Durant was not a believer. But even he saw how false this notion was.
This lie that we don't know if Jesus ever existed is even dallied with, and (thankfully) dismissed, by some of the modern bestselling books promoting atheism by Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and the late Christopher Hitchens.

Back in the early 80’s, I worked in the bookstore of a prominent (liberal) seminary near Boston.
One day, a high ranking professor came in and asked me to do some research for her on the “Moral Majority”. I diligently gathered source material, hoping to get a little nod on the “Thank You” page of the upcoming publication.
When the book came out, I was at first disappointed to see that she listed a bunch of people but left me out! I was very hurt at first, until I began reading the book. It was a HATCHET job on Evangelicals, Conservatives, Christian Believers, and Republicans! It was a nasty little mean-spirited book, and I was glad that my name was NOT in it!
Years later, the prof has a “Dr.” in front of her name and is on EVERY History Channel program that attempts to debunk Jesus (or marry Him off to Mary Magdeline!LOL).
And I am still a Believer, still a Conservative, still a Christian after all these years.
I am SO glad I wasn’t mentioned in that book! LOL!
An excellent source is “The Case For Christ” by Lee Strobel; really a must read.
Not sure why most liberals hate Christianity but accept islam with no questions asked.

Durant made a very good observation in “Caesar and Christ”...When the Romans were heaping scorn and abuse on the first Christians in the arena,there is no record of anyone saying that Christ was a myth.And this was only a few short decades after the crucifixion.They were accused of every perversion and evil that can be imagined but never of being duped by a lie.
He was an old man and the Roman mob felt a little bad putting such an old harmless man to death. They said he would let him go if he joined them in a cheer of “Death to the Atheists!” - a common chant the crowd would engage in while putting Christians to death.
He looked out at the crowd and loudly exclaimed “DEATH TO THE ATHEISTS!”.
The mob was not amused.
People believe because they want to believe.
For someone who doesn’t want to believe, they won’t even if someone rises from the dead.

But I was a sweet, gentle new Christian at the time.
I really thought that a professor in a school of theology would at least believe that Jesus was Who He said He was!
