>>John Paul II, who was pope over 25 years, had one of the longest tenures in office, and at 58 when elected, was one of the youngest popes ever elected.<<
For 76, he seems spry. Ratzinger looked frail from the beginning.
Also, I think Francis I looks very friendly. Like your favorite grandpa who somehow knows what you are thinking and might even let you do it!
Snap judgement based on his opening benediction...
Note how he kept the plain vestments.
A Pope of the People. Now, I hope he respects the Laws of Free Men as much as his love for the Poor...

Amen. Just got back on as my browser actually froze when this broke. I think it’s a very good thing that he is from South America, in that this should give him a lot of experience in how to reach out to the young (lots of Under 30’s down there). And despite their reputation in some quarters, I had an uncle who was a Jesuit, and he was VERY Conservative.

What an exciting moment to be in Rome! Perhaps your parish priest will lead a group to World Youth Day this summer. He is the first Jesuit pope .. Fr. Mitch Pacwa will be grinning from ear to ear.
Viva il Papa!

Not at all. The Catholic Church has recognized that there would likely be Popes between Benedict and Peter the Roman.

He's not with Liberation Theology, he's with Communone e Liberazione, a conservative Church group I used to enjoy beer & pizza with 25 years ago (they had a branch in DC). The founders of C+L were Cathlic students at the University of Milan who regular got beat up by the Marxist student groups. They survived a lot and are reliably anticommunist.
I hung out with them for a little while in New Haven, CT (early '90s). One of them Allessandro Ghidini was in Yale Med School ... OB/GYN. He was the only one who refused to do abortions in internship, earning him the ire of his classmates, as that meant they had to do more.
By the way, when you hang out with an Italian social/religious/political group, you eat well.

Is there a point in time that you can referrence where God interacts with the new Pope? Like, three days after he enters Popedom, he can expect a visit? God calls each new Pope on his cell phone to congratulate him while he's getting dressed. Then God "friends" the Pope on Facebook. That's been the tradition since the 3rd century. Before that the Pope ascended directly into heaven to have dinner with God where, according to legend, they feasted on beans and haggis. Does that answer your question?

From his wiki:
voiced support for social programs, and publicly challenged free-market policies.
The new Pope is a socialist. That doesn't bode well. His appointment will validate every Catholic that voted for Obama.
You could very well see this Pope calling for support for Obamacare from the Vatican.
This is not a good day.
His doctrinal views are conservative which is good. But as Rush said yesterday, he's one of those christians that is deceived in believing liberalism = charity. That giving away other peoples property forcefully = charity.

Youthful is nice; experienced is better. The average length of the time in the Papacy is between 7-12 years. The men selected are usually pretty old and the regime of the Pope is a taxing one. And this one is old enough to have long experience with the people he will consider for elevation to archbishop and cardinal.

Since he is a Jesuit I would surmise Francis Xavier, who was a great evangelizer so this would be an excellent sign.

Hmmmmm.....I have a family member whose first-generation Italian wife was shocked to learn recently that her 96 year old mother had been a member of the Italian Communist Party.
Maybe she did it for the linguini?

So you’re embracing Wikipedia as a source?
Perhaps we should hear from more direct sources before making a conclusion.

YAAAAAAYYYYYY!
From Wikipedia:
He has affirmed church teaching on homosexuality, though he teaches the importance of respecting individuals who are homosexual. He strongly opposed legislation introduced in 2010 by the Argentine Government to allow same-sex marriage, calling it a "real and dire anthropological throwback".
In a letter to the monasteries of Buenos Aires, he wrote: "Let's not be naive, we're not talking about a simple political battle; it is a destructive pretension against the plan of God. We are not talking about a mere bill, but rather a machination of the Father of Lies that seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God." He has also insisted that adoption by homosexuals is a form of discrimination against children. This position received a rebuke from Argentine president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, who said the church's tone was reminiscent of "medieval times and the Inquisition".

And the gay marriage and women ordination advocates are deeply disappointed. MSNBC is deeply disappointed (after the continuous, shrill, hype for a liberal over the last two weeks)..
