I'm thinking St. Francis Xavier, but then I am reading a book entitled "Introduction to the Devout Life" by St. Francis de Sales. Of course, non-Catholics might immediately jump to St. Francis of Assisi -- and that's OK, for he also bore the wounds of Christ, the stigmata.

Seems to me most Popes had issues with the rich for not doing enough for the poor. Most didn’t carry on about it because they didn’t want to alienate donors, but the issues are there.

I’m ok with that. I just didn’t want someome so “modern” he would stray from the basic teachings as so many other faiths have done (eg, gay clergy and marriage, abortion).

St Francis de Sales has some of the most useful writing of any of the Saints I have read.

"Fr. Mitch Pacwa will be grinning from ear to ear. "

God Bless Pope Francis!

Has anyone said if his name comes from St. Francis of Assisi or St. Francis Xavier (the Jesuit)?

MSNBC is deeply disappointed

That makes me happy.

It will be interesting to hear what our more liberal parishioners say. I expect Pope Francis's "walk the talk" commitment to care for the poor will make a very good impression.

Liberal, I’m not sure, but if he is a Jesuit, he is definitely a leftist. His will be an iron-fisted rule.

Supposedly from Francis of Assisi, as a gesture of unification of the Church (since the Jesuits and the Franciscans were always at odds.

Wow, you have all the "St. Francis" saints there already!

Well, they're all good guys anyway!

Jesuit, he is definitely a leftist.

In what sense? That's like saying because I've been to San Francisco, I'm gay. Couldn't be further from the truth.

Nope. I had good Jesuit Fr. Edward Berbusse for U.S. Constitution at Christendom College. Very pro-U.S. Constitution, conservative, intelligent, charitable, tough on tardiness, and otherwise gentle and prayerful soul. May he rest in peace.

I also had Fr. Miceli, who broke with the order, but retained the training. Brilliant, but never lost the Bronx accent. A fine, fine man. May he rest in peace as well.

With Jesuits, your mileage will vary. the corruption of the best is the worst, so there are plenty of bad Jesuits out there. I doubt Pope Francis is one of them.

That would lend credance to the belief that he is to be the prophecied False Prophet. Antichrist, and the FP will definitely be “unifiers.” The people love to be fooled by unifiers.

In a Good Morning America article, Pope Francis was quoted as saying that tomorrow he will go “pray to the Madonna”. I know the catfights around about whether Catholics pray to Mary or rather seek her prayers. Was this just another reporters bad translation?

"Challenged free market policies" is pretty vague, and actually somehat equivocating. Could be he opposes the rich Obamunist banksters, which I don't have any opinion on unless you twist my arm WAY back. And then I'll say, "I'm agin' gangsters and banksters."

It's not something that comes up "de fide," anyhow. Meaning it's not a doctrine on faith and morals, it's "prudential judgment," and therefore not a question on which he can speak with authority.

Thou shalt not steal.

Thou shalt not covet.

Whatevery you did unto the least of My brethren, you did unto Me.

Those are the authoritative statements.

I suspect quite a few of us are withholding uncharitable comments to you on this blessed occasion. Have a good day, e-s!
