Its a hint: St. Xavier Francis evangelized India.

And of course it was also chosen in a nod to the most admired and beloved Catholic saints of the Middle Ages: St. Francis Of Assisi.

We have three firsts today: the first pope from outside Europe, the first Jesuit Pope and the first Pope to name himself after the founders of the Jesuit and Franciscan orders.

Its a watershed moment in the Catholic World.

You need to study the history of the Jesuits, particularly in South America. They are the political power in SA, and the reason for the deep class division, and severe poverty of the working class there.

I'm thinking St. Francis Xavier, but then I am reading a book entitled "Introduction to the Devout Life" by St. Francis de Sales. Of course, non-Catholics might immediately jump to St. Francis of Assisi -- and that's OK, for he also bore the wounds of Christ, the stigmata.

Let's see .. St. Francis Xavier was a Jesuit missionary. When the new pope stepped out on the balcony, he was dressed in simple cassock, shunning the mozetta. He wore a very simple cross. From what I hear, he is a very humble man which might suggest St. Francis of Assisi - il poverello. Then again, he is a theologian and, as Eepsy notes, his were great spiritual writings.

Perhaps ... the name represents all three. Wow! What a day ... and what a surprise! All those media heads conjecturing about Turkson, Scola, Dolan .. and the College of Cardinals, applying one of the oldest and most steadfast election methods, submitted this to prayer and gave us a humble and prayerful servant. Surprise!

God bless him! Let's keep those prayers going; he will need them.

Viva il Papa!

"God calls each new Pope on his cell phone to congratulate him while he's getting dressed. Then God "friends" the Pope on Facebook. That's been the tradition since the 3rd century. Before that the Pope ascended directly into heaven to have dinner with God where, according to legend, they feasted on beans and haggis. Does that answer your question?

I can't believe this is true because God wouldn't make anyone eat haggis.

I like the way he talks with his hands.

How else would Italians understand him? ;)

I have a question and I am not trying to ruin the moment because this is such a happy day but my sister kept asking me and I had no answer.

She wanted to know why Cardinal Mahoney was permitted to vote in the conclave.

You eat well, that's for sure!

My beaming don-o just asked me if I wanted him to cook something special for supper. (He's good like that: not a Dago mind you, but he DOES cook.)

I said, more or less in honor of Papa Francesco, "Spaghetti and meat balls!"

"Esse nufesso qui dice male di maccheroni."

(You'd have to be crazy to say something against macaroni.)

Not a problem. EWTN will rebroadcast it tonight at 9pm after Fr. Mitch Pacwa’s program. You may want to record both as Fr. Mitch is a Jesuit, like our new pope, and will probably be dancing a jig ; - ) I hope Pope Francis cleans up the Jesuits and returns their good name, in the Americas.

It’s a fallacy of composition to robotically apply that to Francis.
